How do you define "best"? Lowest price, easiest to start using, most features, touch screen or buttons? Way too many different things that are user-specific for mpst to offer good advice, but you see many raves about the etrex 30.

I use an Oregon 450 and really like it.

Like many things, some will swear by the same item that others swear at. Good luck.

I have looked hard at the 30. It is in my price range and seems like good features.

Also like the looks of the GPS 78s. Think it is between those two. Any comments?

Best paperless GPS reasonable priced. Been looking and getting more and more confused.
