  1. It's already been established that the coords were wrong. Two digits transposed. Looking at the new coords in Google Earth, I can see how it could be 3.5 stars of terrain. Pretty rocky in that area. 3.5 stars for difficulty.. now that's another question How funny! Many were worried that the cache would be a powertrail, lpc, guardrail or other png, but instead it is a cache by a newer cacher with wrong coords. Priceless, and just as fitting.
  2. To me this is a contradictary subject. While I agree that Groundspeak is about the $$$, I expect any business to want to grow and earn money. On the other side, I feel that geocaching is much better as a niche hobby, and a lot of the business decisions are not good for the hobby that I like and it is becoming a hobby that is getting harder and harder for me to enjoy as much. The pmo cache option has actually helped some of my angst. I resisted them for a long time, then finally switched all mine over and would not go back.
  3. If Groundspeak actually says this in the newsletter and the intent is that if you forgot a pen and you didn't sign the log book you can't log your find online, then the puritans have won. Thank you Groundspeak for sucking the last bit of belief that I had that this is just a game and the the online logs are there to share your experiences with other. I have just logged my last online log. I will continue to find geocaches. I will record what I found privately in my personal database but no cache owner or other geocacher will ever know if I found the cache or even if I searched and DNF'd it. The "rule" was fine when it was a "rule" meaning that as a general rule you should sign the log. But when they are telling cache owners to delete online finds because someone forgot a pen, or they lost their pen, or it wouldn't write in the wet log, or whatever else then, IMO, they have gone too far. This is supposed to be fun, and I've had a few times when I had pen problems or couldn't sign the log and I'm sure as not am going to go puritan and decide not to count the find or to delete the of someone who logs one of my cache where the same thing happens. I hope that a Groundspeak lackey can clarify what was meant in the last newsletter. AND YES MY KNICKERS ARE IN A TWIST RIGHT NOW. First time in a long time I've been happy with Groundspeak. That is the way I have read the guidelines since the beginning. I can't stand all the excuses in life these days. I agree that an owner shouldn't delete a log, because the "finders" shouldn't give the CO cause. If you don't fulfill the rules of the game, just don't claim a find, unfortunately, so many have excuses for not signing and many are constantly attempting to justify them and CO's are left to monitor their logs. You know what they say about excuses, although the same can be said about opinions. I'm just glad the wording came out so that it is harder to twist the meaning, even though I still think it was clear enough before.
  4. Thats called a virtual, and new ones are no longer allowed.
  5. Yes. The issue is about who put the nails in the trees, and who is allowed to put nails in trees. Not whether the nail will truly do major damage to the tree. Groundspeak is perfectly OK with geocachers putting pointy metal objects in trees
  6. Not here. You hide right or you don't hide it. We don't want the game banned around here and everyone is and does watch you here. Just because some cacher play fast and loose wiht the rules, doesn't make it right. I essentially agree with you, but being from Europe like OZ2CPU I know that geocaching is quite different in most European countries. (The situation is not the same all over Europe - e.g. UK and the Netherlands have more rules than e.g. the German speaking countries and the Scandinavian ones). Some types of defacement are what the local cachers in the mentioned areas regard as perfectly normal since it is what they encounter every day - so it is not a issue of a few not willing to follow some rules (which do exist in every system). Cezanne The no defacement as well as all other guidelines have to be the same for everyone. The guideline doesn't state: "No object or property may be altered to provide a hiding place, clue, or means of logging a find...unless you live in Europe." C&P from the shop geocaching/cache supplies/night caching/ fire tacks page. Perfect for those Night Caching fanatics, FireTacks Trail Markers™ utilize 3M prismatic technology for brilliant reflectivity at night and in low light conditions. ICE WHITE is neutral in daytime and STEALTH BRIGHT hides your trails completely during the day but reflects bright amber orange at night, a truly awesome combination! These multi-directional, reflective tacks will help mark the trail straight to the cache. Place them on the sides of trees and other geocachers can use their own light source to follow the trail. This set includes 16 ICE WHITE 4D tacks and 16 STEALTH BRIGHT 4D tacks to help blend in with surroundings in the daytime. The kit can easily be transported in a reusable container.
  7. I don't use a smartphone to cache, so I don't like it when people whine when I log a find on a FTF hours later, when I get to a computer. I log the same way I logged pre-smartphone. There were some cachers upset when the STF didn't know they were going to be STF pre-smartphone, but it has gotten worse. In truth, it doesn't bother me a whole lot, but I've had some unfortunate emails and online logs from disgruntled STFers. I always respond, and "educate" them on what I feel is proper logging technique. They don't have to agree, but noone has swayed me to their side of thinking. I find it interesting that they have all quickly disappeared from the game
  8. new winner in the contest then huh?
  9. And just to make things more confusing, apparently the reflective markers (e.g., FireTacks) used for some night caches are often not counted against the saturation guidelines. GC.com does sell them after all
  10. Again with that type of area there is no need to use a bison tube. Use a small LnL. Or don't use a container at all. Perhaps a set of co-ords engraved on a dog tag nailed to a fence post(with permission of course) Or a series of reflectors to count...Like was mentioned above me there are ways and good reasons not to use a container at all. I've seen a first stage for a multi with the subsequent coordinates written on a rock. One of the first multis I did used a short piece of 2x4, placed on an already existing wooden structure such that it looked like it was part of the structure. The coordinates were written on the back. One of the advantages of *not* using a physical stages is that you don't have to worry about proximity issues with other caches. Any item placed by the CO is considered a physical stage, not just a container. I don't necessarily like it or agree with it, but that is how I remember it, unless it's changed, haven't read that section in a long while.
  11. A perfect opportunity to C&P event logs. One step closer to that being the norm. Awesome!
  12. I for one do not agree with the rule/guideline. Is it truly a rule, or just a guideline? I also don't agree with calling them guidelines and then enforcing them to different degrees. I may attempt to continue the "curse" series in question by referencing the "rules" on the TB page (which are not subject to the same guidelines/rules) and not on the cache page itself, in a similar way that other guidelines are loopholed by geocachers and Groundspeak themselves.
  13. Thank you Moun10bike. That is my son. He must have used that email address. Case closed. Thanks again!
  14. That is the same error I get, but I'm not using that email anywhere else. Also, I've had an alternate account for 5 years with the same email on both. I get newsletters for both.
  15. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I tried to add an email address (I've done it before), but I keep getting an error that the email address is already in use. It is the same before the @, but @windstream.net instead of @cox.net. Not sure if the same beginning is somehow throwing it off or what. It only lists the cox.net in my profile page, when I added an email in the past when I was travelling, it showed both email addresses with a primary account. This time it is only showing the one. I am not using any scripts. Thanks for any help M 5
  16. Go ahead and delete this thread, I will start a new one myself in the bug section.
  17. Not using scripts. Could a moderator please move this to the bug forum. Wasn't sure it was a bug, but now I'm thinking it is. Thank you, M 5

  19. May have already been suggested, but a 528ft diameter circle around caches on the map that could be toggled on or off would be nice, and/or the long/lat with your pointer, ala google earth and the ruler from google earth. I guess you can bring them up in google earth for the last two, but the circle would be great.
  20. M5 - If it's clear that it's not real, then it's part of the joke! Note that mine (see a few messages up) is rated 1/5 - a fundamentally silly rating. ...Bill When ALR's were allowed and you could delete logs that didn't keep up appearences, the false D/T would be essential to keeping the joke a secret. Now, it is just an easy way to get difficult combos. That can be done on any cache of course, but most liars caches I've seen are either 5/5 or a hard combo to find. I think that the D/T should be accurate and once again, no reason for the false ones, even on a liars cache, now that they are supposed to be "open" anyway.
  21. Looks like a cheap way to get some tough combo's to me. Since ALR's are not allowed, there is no reason for the false D/T on a liars cache.
