  1. Okay, so I've been getting into Geocoins. I think they are sooo cool; although none of the ones I've placed have been moved along yet. My personal recent favorite coin is the Dark Side of the Cache Geocoin. I placed it in a cache called "Breathe" which I thought was completely appropriate. Several days later, a cacher logged a find for the Breathe cache and stated they took the Dark Side of the Cache coin to move along. But, they never logged the coin. It's only been two weeks, but is it appropriate for me to email this cacher and ask them to log the coin????
  2. I get a new pair of Merrell Chameleon Stretch every year - log about 15-20 hiking miles each week, so by early spring, they have no cushion and are useless. They are awesome, you never have to break these babies in! When I'm in the yak, I wear a pair of Keen Newport H2's which are also decent for the trail on a hot summer day. Right now my feet are in the buff!!!
  3. That's really cool, but does anyone have an idea how often the satellite shots are even updated on google earth? I'm only asking because a few years ago we tore down our house after a fire and rebuilt a much bigger home. The google earth satellite still shows the old structure when you zoom in. We've been in this house for 2 years now.
  4. Sometimes a 2006 Nissan Murano SL (mine - 33K miles) and other times a 2006 Hummer H3 (his). I like mine better!
  5. I got the pink and green iCache coins - love them! Where can I find the activation codes for these coins??
  6. I love the Venture CX; I did get an SD card for mine and I already had the cable from my digital camera. Great capabilities in a little yellow box; I find it's very easy to use - been using it since December. And I personally like the color, because I can always find it!!!
  7. Swim and use one of those noodle things to help stay afloat - I think they only cost $7. Now really, so many people have kayaks these days - maybe you can borrow one from someone - get in some good exercise while going for the cache too!
  8. Dont go caching with this guy then! Knight2000, you've just traumatized me for life. That was so gross.
  9. Snakes - I will NEVER touch a snake to get a cache. I'm always nervous when a cache is in a crevice or small caves (this is the result of my 3 brothers scaring me with a snake when I was 10 - I guess I will never get over it). I see so many snakes on the trails and on/around the rock formations (I just want to run away every time I see one). I always use a really really really long stick to make sure there's not a snake in the rocks before I go for the cache.
  10. Wow that's a great site. Thanks Mopar. I've been downloading my hikes into google maps for some time now. I just registered and even downloaded some local trails.
  11. I totally agree to move it outside of the poison ivy patch. I went after a cache yesterday by a bridge on the AT; I sat on a rock to retrieve it and later when I was putting it back, I realized the whole area was covered with poison ivy. I am sooo lucky that I'm not allergic to it - I could roll in it and never get it. My caching partners, on the other hand, are both severely allergic to it. Luckily this one was in my hands!
  12. Just placed one of mine into a cache called "Breathe". Very appropriate coin to place in this cache. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...68-a03ee6a1260d
  13. I got my GPSr for Christmas to use hiking. It has the Geocache icon when you click on Find. I had no idea what it was but researched it right away and within 48 hours I began the obsession.
  14. I'm fairly new - since December 06, but I probably wouldn't change much except for maybe get a better unit after this season and I do plan to try harder to convince my husband that this is something he'd totally be in to (he hasn't even gone out once with me yet). When I do something, I usually go over the top. I started out like this: -My GPSr is an etrex Venture CX (got it as a gift for Christmas from hubby); -Bought TOPO preprogrammed data card for the unit within the next 2 days; -Joined Geocaching.com as a premium member so I could use the pq's (although I didn't quite know what they were yet); -I started paperless after only 2 weeks (Palm Z22 does the trick - oh then I learned what a pocket query was); -Great caching partners and keep adding more - Miko the geodog is always with me (I usually have with me either my closest friend, my son, and other friends or family) -My hiking boots were already worn in (Merrell Chameleon Stretch - actually my 3rd pair); -I even bought the geocaching for idiots book, however, I never opened it. (I think its under the drivers seat of my car) -I just recently started purchasing geocoins of my own to pass on; In a nutshell, I'm very happy with how it's going!
  15. I received my coins yesterday and they are awesome! It makes me feel like I want to Breathe, Breathe in the Air . . . Thank you!!!!
  16. Yesterday I received: 2 - Dark Side of the Cache Geocoins 1 - United States Marines Corps Geocoin Today I received: 1 - Caching with the Luck of the Irish geocoin
  17. Ugh snakes. I've never seen so many as I've seen in the last 2 weeks. I guess they come out in springtime but I've never noticed them. After I see one it generally ruins my hike because that's all I think about. Ticks too are already out in abundant quantities. I pulled 4 off myself today after caching and about a dozen off of the dog. I guess I should actually use the bug spray that's in my pack.
  18. We also use the Palm Z22 but where do you get the cachemate program and how does it work? Thanks! http://www.smittyware.com/palm/cachemate/
  19. I use the same unit and the battery has a very long life. I also use cachemate and downloand all my data from GSAK. All are very simple to use.
  20. Welcome to the obsession. I'm somewhat of a noob too and I am utterly addicted; it only took about a week or so to be this way. I find myself leaving work an hour or so early so we can go caching and hiking before dark. I've also taken a few days off of work just to go caching. Happy caching!
  21. We have a bunch of yaks, so we'd probably be in too! Sounds like a good time!
  22. Okay, so I gave in and let him use the GPSr on Saturday. But, I only gave in because I skipped out of work 3 hours early on Friday so I could get some caching in. I got in a nice relaxing hike though on Saturday of about 7 miles, so it was all good. I did tell him if this was going to become a habit he would have to get his own GSPr. BTW SLO Trekker, the paintball obsession of theirs has taken on a life of their own and is a huge expense. Now the boy has gone caching with me 2x and he's jonesing to go again; so I think I'll blow out of work a little early again tomorrow. The boy now thinks that maybe he'd want his own GPSr - maybe he and the hubby could share! I did ask hubby if there was a weekend he had a big pb event, would he let me use his pb gun if I wanted to play (believe me that this will NEVER happen because my idea of fun is certainly not running around with a bunch of middle aged men and teenage boys in camouflage getting shot at with paint). Of course he said yes I could use the pb gun because he and the boy have 12 pb guns between them. Anyway, he got my point and understood my pain. Funny thing is, he could have accomplished what he needed via google earth. I'm a taurus so compromise isn't usually in my vocabulary but I guess we sometimes need to do it (against my better judgment though). Thanks all for being sympathetic.
  23. She should try it and maybe she'd like it. I'm certainly not a Stupid Stupid Man - maybe a Stupid Stupid Girl though in my husband's eyes. We have to get them into it!!!!
  24. Nevermid, I take it all back . . . You're Obsessed, not me (I've only found 17). I guess the obsession is whatever you let it be . . . Although I'm still a lunatic if I don't get out hiking. I guess my obsession of caching is only just growing - my obsession is more that I definitely have to be out hiking every weekend - but now every hike revolves around a cache. What do you do for a living that you've been able to find so many since just December?
  25. For me, the primary thing is to disconnect from the real world and get close to nature, hike, exercise, hang with the pooch, exercise, look at the trees, birds, rocks, flowers, clouds, sky, exercise, hang with my pal Amy without our husbands, explore new places, exercise, challenge myself, exercise, get away from the TV, exercise, etc. If it's just Miko the geodog and me, I usually listen to a good playlist on the ipod while I'm out there too. If it's Amy and me and you encounter us, you'll hear us from a mile away because the chatter between us is non-stop. Oh yeah, usually when we're hiking and caching we're out for the day and the snacks are a big part - we plan this several days in advance and it's usually just the same old protein bar and a sandwich and apple. Also . . . Although, I am sooooo scared of snakes, so alot of my time out there consumes me with the thought of what I will do if I encounter a snake. So I'm trying to have fun, disconnect and exercise while the whole time I'm thinking of what would I do to escape a snake encounter. I get kind of whacky at times I guess, although the fear of snakes is not enough to stop me. I love being outside doing this. I always thought if I could make a real living at hiking and kayaking (and now caching) I would find a way. Notice that I said a "real" living!!!
