  1. Team DeLorme here. Please try this:

Before trying to send over information please try the following:

Make sure you have an SD card in the device.

On the PN-40 go to Menu>Geocaches>Menu>File>New and give the new file a name.

Open Cache Register and try to transfer the Pocket Query to the device.

If the transfer completes, on the PN-40 go to Menu>Geocaches>Menu>File>Open and open the Pocket Query.

If you are still having issues please reply with the steps you are taking and the resulting behaviors.

Thanks and together we'll get it figured out.

  2. You will need Topo North America 9.0 to use FW version 2.8. We tried early on to overcome this but with the substantial new Easy-Synch development overhaul in Topo North America 9.0 had no choice but to tie these two together or there would be too many customers with busted file issues.

At some point you have to make the jump forward to keep the firmware and software working well together and this is one of those times. I think it is fair to say that DeLorme has issued a lot of new functionality and fixes with our frequent and responsive firmware updates since we first launched the PN-20. As a tech company, we do not like it when our tools are regularly busted by "upgrades" (which happens all the time) so understand the pain, but we are all on this train to the unknown together and have to keep moving up on occasion (or decide to use what we have knowing it is "good enough").

Ultimately, that's everyone's individual choice in the end. Lots to like about the new releases coming -- this has been the most complex and challenging development project in many years for those of us at DeLorme what with satellite communications, Topo software with the new synch and data revisions, new UI and fonts, redesigned hardware boards for major battery improvements, etc. You might want to see what the first people using 2.8 and T-9 together have to say before deciding. That will probably be in a week to ten days.

FW 2.8 for your PN-40 is in final testing and should be hitting the streets in a matter of days. Remember -- it does not have the new UI but does have many other good new items. Thanks.

Will the FW 2.8 require TOPO9 or can it be used on the -40 without?

  3. The DeLorme Web site is planned to go live with new content on the PN-60 this Wednesday the 16th FYI -- we pushed it back one day from previous plan. Thanks for your patience.

How come the PN-60 isn't plastering the Delorme.com website?!?!???!?!?!?!!? I'm stoked about the release of "Big Red!"

It will be on the 15th.

    Thanks

  4. Your provocative title got my attention! We are expecting to begin shipping PN-60 (red) models to retailers late next week so this model should be available soon thereafter for you. The PN-60w model (black/wireless) required for the new SPOT Communicator being made for DeLorme by SPOT, is still on a July timetable. Hope this helps. We are battling component shortages but are all over it every day here in the US and around the globe.

Sorry about the topic title here -- bad pun.

Amazon has just alerted me that the PN-60 ship date which was yesterday (10th) is now the 20th-23rd. Ouch. Since the ship date of the 10th was only updated on the 11th, this implies that those of you waiting for the PN-60w with or without Spot, shouldn't hold your breath for those late July dates. You may first be alerted to a change on August 1. Just speculation on my part, of course, but since June 10th for the PN-60 was reaffirmed by Delorme less than a month ago, my guess is that all the PN-60 dates are aggressive, best-case dates.

Not a biggee in the long run, of course. Just a warning. I *had* planned some big hikes around the delivery date of today. So if you are doing some planning for hiking/caching to use your new toy, keep those plans flexible!

  5. DeLorme here. In mid-June we will be shipping Topo North America 9.0, which will be the first time DeLorme has provided topographic maps for Canada. I believe if you buy a PN-40 from Amazon in Canada now they will provide you the upgrade when it comes out at no charge. So this means you will have streets, topos (with contours), and points of interest for Canada and the US.

The product will also provide the Map Library downloads we currently offer plus a new subscription plan for those who want the most detailed aerial imagery available, which we will be providing from a new source. The current DeLorme Map Library subscription includes the official Canadian "Map Sheets" -- the best available 1:50k raster maps for Canada.

There are many new improvements coming in this version -- including an easy one-button synch mechanism to maintain parity between the GPS and desktop software for your various files (think mp3 file methods), but also still with custom controls for those who want to have precise control over what files reside on the GPS and which on the desktop.

We also have new BLM lands for the western U.S. with a new hatch pattern on parks to make it clearer to see when you stray over certain boundaries. These maps are important for hunters who hunt on private lands with permission from the land owners. And we've added in the descriptions from our paper atlas books about attractions and natural features, so you get the complete write-ups on the GPS when out and about. These will be great to have as we have researched them ourselves over the course of many years and they include everything from vineyards in CA to attractions in FL.

Plus many new street, trail and topo map updates. This product also includes roads for Mexico but not topographic data at this time. Cache Register will be included within the software but still available for Mac users and others who only care about geocaching and don't want/need the topo software as well. All new data DVDs will be included for GPS users as done in the past (e.g., you buy a new GPS from us, you get the new data included on five DVDs plus the software).

Hope this helps and we will publish the latest schedule for this and the new GPS devices very soon once we hammer through a few final details. But expect Topo NA 9.0 around June 11.

  6. Which one is better for driving directions to area of the cache? I'd like to be able to load a gpx file and then have the program provide directions to nearest cache. If it could plot a loop visiting several caches that would nice to have.

I have a new netbook and I'd like to get some mapping/navigation software for it. I have S&T 2007 and the USB gpsr that came with it, but this old version is rather weak at providing directions.

I'm leaning toward Street Atlas just because of Microsoft's activation requirements (can't install the same copy on both desktop and laptop) but if there was some compelling reason to use Streets and Trips I'd like to hear about it.

And, another question, is there any advantage to the "plus" version if I do get Street Atlas?

An excellent forum to better understand all the pluses and minuses can be found here. Hope this helps.

  7. Just got a new PN-40. I was so excited to get this but now I'm having buyers remorse.

Upside? Accuracy. It is the best I have ever seen.

Downside. The duration of the charge. It last about 30 minutes if you charge with AC and less if you use the card charger. Not very ideal for Cachers. Also, no software available for Mac users. DeLorme puts out something called Cache Register that is supposed to work as a widget for the Macs but I installed on several units and it just crashed all of them. No tech support available either. I had to fight with them just to get my money back (which still has not happened as far as I know).

Is there any Mac software out there that I can use to load in caches and offload results back to Geo-caching.com?

Caleb from Team DeLorme here. Obviously something is wrong as you should get 8-12 hours on AAs and 12-15 on e-Lith AAs, depending on how long you keep the backlit screen. Have you tried the AAs we shipped with your order?

Call us on Monday and reference my post here. Not clear what kind of battery you are trying to charge in the device based on this post FYI. As for Cache Register, there were some changes made to the code on g.com that caught us off-guard so we quickly made the updates, so not sure what is happening to you, but please call next week (best not to call first thing Monday as that will be a very busy time after the long weekend). My brain is cramping on the tech support number right now (sorry) but you can find it on our web site lower left-hand navigation in the Support section. We will take care of you. Thanks for your patience.
