  8. I see no problem in moving your own bug, that DOES track it's mileage, IOF you actually hit each cache with it in possession. So what if t doesn't fit in the cache, logging it in and out doesn't hurt anything. I have logged bugs into VIRTUALS as I had them with me when I found the virtual. Take a PICTURE if you must PROVE it's been there. One of mine recently went to Paris, was too big for the container there, the cacher took a picture (3 actually) and brought it BACK to the Conus. Because the cache was small container, does that negate the overseas round trip? NO, it went. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THIS is the PUBLIC face of Geocaching, when someone learns of the sport this is where they come to learn more, what are YOU showing them? http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/ International Black Sheep Society of Genealogists
  9. Someone "Grabbed" it and logged it wherever it is. Sometimes this happens, you can probably contact the last person and arrange to GRAB it again and have that person re-grab it to update the chain of possession. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THIS is the PUBLIC face of Geocaching, when someone learns of the sport this is where they come to learn more, what are YOU showing them? http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/ International Black Sheep Society of Genealogists

  12. quote:Originally posted by Team GPSaxophone: Are you saying virtuals should be approved just because they are handicapped accessible? Talk about discrimination! No, I am saying that making caches accessable to the mobility disabled is a GOOD idea, and unfortunately the majority of HIKING caches exclude the mobility challenged. In my area the majority of caches are on 4,000' "hills", at the top of a unimproved firebreak/trails. My three disabled kids and I, normally have to bypass attempts at these because they are inaccessable to us. The few we have attempted became ordeals. Virtual "flatland" caches are an option that most mobility challenged people can access. Sure I can see http://www.geocaching.com wanting a physical cache if feasable, but if that requires bushwacking, climbing, or even just rough ground, then a significant portion of the populace is excluded, UNLESS the allowance of accessable caches is continued. Virtuals are not MADE to be handicap friendly, but many of them ARE. I feel it is ONE reason not to discourage the creation, or ban them outright. (you can change the NAME, and allow people to filter them out, but do not delete them) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THIS is the PUBLIC face of Geocaching, when someone learns of the sport this is where they come to learn more, what are YOU showing them? http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/ International Black Sheep Society of Genealogist
  13. I( can not say for certain what the convincer was, although the TOUR would have been accepted as a MULTI. These are individuals, so you don't have to hit them all for credit, so I would say it was the TOUR concept. I also have a local Route 66 Tour. But with one exception these are all traditionals. It starts at the ORIGINAL McDonalds and Route 66 museum, and goes to another Route 66 Museum Route 66 / McToy museum ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THIS is the PUBLIC face of Geocaching, when someone learns of the sport this is where they come to learn more, what are YOU showing them? http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/ International Black Sheep Society of Genealogist
  14. Most Virtuals are Disabled Person friendly, both in creating one and in visiting one. A person who wants to participate, and is restricted in accessability may very well want to createcaches that are virtuals. (They do not have the hardships of getting to them to maintain a cache container, and yet still can place caches as virtuals) in addition a lot of virtuals are essentially waypoints, and getting close enougt determine the answers for verification may be a lot easier for the disabled than actually touching the spot, and signing in the log book. Sure I believe that log books are good idea, and needed as a minimum in micros and traditionals, but VIRTUALS have an important place as well in the game ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THIS is the PUBLIC face of Geocaching, when someone learns of the sport this is where they come to learn more, what are YOU showing them? http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/ International Black Sheep Society of Genealogists
  15. I had a planned set of Virtuals (a Virtual Tour) dealing with the Earp Family in the San Bernardino Area, it all started with a physical cache placed by Deezul Come see where an old west legend once lived which had been Dursleyed (deliberately sabotaged by outsiders). When I submitted the tour locations, a gravesite tour, the local admin at first denied the postings, and wanted a physical cache. I explained my PLAN for the tour, and after agreeing to re-establish a cache at Deezuls archived cache, the plan was approved, the other 3 virtuals are now approved separately verified virtuals, and the TOUR includes Deezul's cache at the homestead. Each of the four caches links to the others on the tour. It is a successful series of "interesting" places. Bending to conform to the rules (and approvers) can really work for the whole concept ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THIS is the PUBLIC face of Geocaching, when someone learns of the sport this is where they come to learn more, what are YOU showing them? http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/ International Black Sheep Society of Genealogist
  16. I hardly expect everyone to agree with me on all issues. (Or in some cases any issues) However it is NOT beyond reasonability to have the forums be within limits of topic specificity. Also, the Managers and creators of the system should have the ability to set the rules, and parameters for posting. That being said, the "complaints" should be only that there is a lack of set standards previously existing that would guide the ON and off topic status of postings. When threads like "add 5 words" go on for weeks and dozens of pages of nonsensical postings, while what appear to be geocaching related discussion get clipped quickly, (even they are not "solidly" about a specific Geocaching subject, but periferral to the discussion) seems to be an inconsistancy. I do note that the "add 5 words" topic did eventually get clipped. The problem isn't necessarily in the moderation but in the determination of some to "push the limits" to see how far they can go before getting clipped, then complaining when it happens. I run some topic specific mail lists, and keeping the posters within limits is a difficult thing, but I solved it by setting up an OFF topic chat mail list, and reminding people to use it gently (sometimes I had to get more assertive). We as user should realize that we are in a place that is not paid for directly by us, and those who are contributing time and resources to the goal are being very generous in allowing the discussions. (Memberships and purchases fron GC/Groundspeak DO support the forums). I do agree that people will go where they feel they are getting what they want, and I see two purposes at work, the actual Geocaching, and the DISCUSSIONS, which often are totally unrelated to the seeking/placing aspects. I suggest that a OFF-topic board area be set up. One that is only archived for 30 days, and then the old posts expire. That way the off topics can eventually go away, are limited in storage space used, and can be ignored by those who want only On-topic discussions. I also suggest that things like photos be limited in display/sorage size, OR they be stored off-site on the person's server of choice. Membership only discussion boards may also be an incentive to get people to join, contribute to the system financially, and reduce the chaff. A PUBLIC area could/should be maintained as well, but the membership area should have features to make it an attraction. We should want to attract new cachers, not drive away the older members/participants, and we should want it to be a friendly hospitable place. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THIS is the PUBLIC face of Geocaching, when someone learns of the sport this is where they come to learn more, what are YOU showing them? http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/ International Black Sheep Society of Genealogists

  19. quote: The officer just wanted to know why the cacher was loitering about. He even offered to help, until he found out how small the micro is (2x1/2 inch). My thought is this: If someone can hide a small parcel around police vehicles and not be seen, perhaps it is a BAD idea to hide geocaches in such a location? With everyone in a security mode, putting hidden objects in a pubvlic services area can only lead to bad karma.... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THIS is the PUBLIC face of Geocaching, when someone learns of the sport this is where they come to learn more, what are YOU showing them? http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/ International Black Sheep Society of Genealogists
  20. quote: Frankly, it's discouraging to think that many posters here in the forums are grown adults. Really? I actually used to enjoy the discussions in the forums, but lately it is all about people whining about the dictatorial aspects of moderation. There wasn't as much negativism in the forums before the moderation was begun, and THAT seems to be a response to the negatism of a FEW who seem willing to undermine (I should note SUCCESSFULLY) the spirit of the activity, for apparent grudge reasons. Sure every now and then a person will make a gaff, and something should be deleted, for the good of harmony, but it is getting to be a little authoritarian around here. It seems (and it has happened to me) that if one person in authority doesn't like a topic, it gets slammed, almost instantly. Rather than delete content, and leave no explaination, how about just turning off the topic and leaving it as an example of what is NOT to be discussed? Deleting a subject, and it's content, but leaving the post subject ON the boards indicates to one and all that the posting party who was squashed is a public FOOL, and that the REASON for the squashing is NOT apparent. If you want to develop paranoia in posting participants, you are doing it right. At this rate you might as well shut down the boards altogether, because the censorship police are doing it one message at a time. There will be long lasting flack from these problems, less people will want to START geocaching, they will look for other activities, in a MORE friendly environment, they will choose OTHER places to socialize ABOUT geocaching, they will develop DESTRUCTIVE behaviors towards geocaching.com, and frankly, Jeremy will lose money. Now to the POSTERS: Knock off the Bickering, whining and complaining, adapt or move on. The bickering, complaining and destructive activities some have done have brought a sour taste to the activity, which is becoming VERY pungent on these boards. 23. I AM having troubles with Easy GPS, amnd I don't know why. My computer CRASHED and had to be reformatted, so I re-downloaded EasyGPS, and then tried to D/l waypoints today, they successfully went into Easy GPS, but sending them to my Meridian Sportrak Map indicates no connection to the Sportrak. (no communication error code 22) I Checked and the cable is good, and the GPSr has the most recent firmware (4.06). Is there something I can do to assure the GPS is communicating? BAAAD! BAAAAD!!!! 24. While viewing several of the Geocaching.com maps which show nearby caches, I notice some of the roads have unusual names inserted, http://www.geocaching.com/map/getmap.aspx?lat=34.24737&lon=-117.44473 has Interstate 15 shown as "Zoe Ln." and the new one near my home has Foothill Blvd. shown as Cozzens Ave. (In Rialto Ca.) What gives? are the streets getting names NO-ONE knows about? or is it a database glitch? BAAAD! BAAAAD!!!! A BAAAD Ancestor is Good to Find!!!! http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/
