  1. quote:Originally posted by Johnny¦Cache,¦Live¦and¦in¦Color!: I fear nothing and am not armed. An armed person is a loaded weapon- an unarmed, cautious person is not going to flip out and kill whatever scares them. I prefer to use my intuitive sense of danger, and my ability to get away smartly, instead of a weapon. Weapons are for the weak. WELL! I do not pack in public, but that doesn't mean there is nothing to fear. NORMAL people do not encounter life threatening danger that often. If they do, then a change of environment is in order. Your "lack of fear" is a lack of situational awareness. You may find yourself in deep Kimshee one day and be wondering where your intuition let you down. Although it is prudent to have an OUT at all times, sometimes the onus is on us to MAKE a way out, because others have denied us other options. I do not promote carrying a firearm, but there is a time and a place for everything, and FEAR is a survival instinct, more accurate than "Intuition". If I find a feeling of fear has me, I pay attention, and use my out. 6. Last week I deployed 4 TBs. I did a cache maintenance run on my string of caches, and encountered three more TBs along the way, which I said "HMM, my TB Motel is empty lets move them all there." So I did. Low and behold this week the cache is ash. Not the TB Hotel, I rescued it and the 7 tbs before the fire got it, but the one that HAD the TBs in it previously. I sadly report that "Over the edge" is ash. The Grandprix fire left half of the concrete plug, a german Pfennig, and a burn't off Geocaching button, with two carbonized seashells. I did recover the burnt sunglasses frames...Perhaps I will TB the cremainder. Unfortunately rehiding a replacement cache is out of the question, there is nowhere to hide one, looks like the MOON. The burning of the two layers thick pipe was so complete it took thirty minutes to find ANY remains. Completely cremated. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THIS is the PUBLIC face of Geocaching, when someone learns of the sport this is where they come to learn more, what are YOU showing them? http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/ International Black Sheep Society of Genealogist

Did my training in the Aircrew Life Supprt school in Chanute, weent for three years to Alaska, 7 months at castle, in California, reupped and spent thee years on the Sr-71, then went to Kunsan, then Dyess, then Suwon, then Osan, then Norton AFB, ca. where I got out in the 1990 force reduction. 9. Sadly I am afraid many people have lost homes in this. I was through the CajonPass today, fires still burning, the "Over the Edge Cache" is destroyed. "Around the Block" and the ones on Little Mountain seem ok. I can almost guarantee that 17 Palms and Devil's canyon are toast. International Booty has been burned over, but may have survived. I pulled the Cajon Junction TB Motel just before the fire got into that area today, it and it's 7 TBs are in my trunk. I was unable to access the Hotel Devore, and that area was at least partially burned ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THIS is the PUBLIC face of Geocaching, when someone learns of the sport this is where they come to learn more, what are YOU showing them? http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/ International Black Sheep Society of Genealogists

  11. Here in Southern California we are experiencing a rash of arson caused wildfires, the current situation is that there are at least four wildfires of large acreage going. Here in the Inland Empire, is the Grand Prix Fire which (from what I saw n TV tonight is within a mile of the Horses and Hockey cache, the cache location was shown on TV.) There are several known caches that are in the BURNED out areas. When this is over, there may be a major archival of several of these. If you have placed caches in the northern Cucamonga/Fontana Area, a check on the caches may be required when the fires are out ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THIS is the PUBLIC face of Geocaching, when someone learns of the sport this is where they come to learn more, what are YOU showing them? http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/ International Black Sheep Society of Genealogists

  15. The reference was to "hazardous waste" like car batteries and tires, things the land fills will not accept, and computer monitors and transformers, which NO-one accepts for disposal. Here in LA they have a city BLOCK of bad Monitors they don't know how to safely dispose of. The EPA hasn't found an acceptable method, the problems being the chemicals inside. People DUMP them because there is no legal way to dispose of them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THIS is the PUBLIC face of Geocaching, when someone learns of the sport this is where they come to learn more, what are YOU showing them? http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/ International Black Sheep Society of Genealogist

  19. I know the "end of summer" tide has ebbed. Searches, and finds are off too. Back east they are already talking about a winter hiatus, due to early cold weather. My Travel Bug motel is FULL, 7 bugs in there. And it is on a Major highway junction. The only solution is to make a concerted effort to move the bugs and keep them flowing. (I even have moved bugs to another TB Motel 8 miles away, just to move them, even though I have "found" that cache many times, it is handy to just move them.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THIS is the PUBLIC face of Geocaching, when someone learns of the sport this is where they come to learn more, what are YOU showing them? http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/ International Black Sheep Society of Genealogists

  21. As long as we are quoting from Pink Floyd: "One of these days, I am going to dash you into little pieces." The lunatic is on the grass. The lunatic is on the grass. Remembering games and daisy chains and laughs. Got to keep the loonies on the path. The lunatic is in the hall. The lunatics are in my hall. The paper holds their folded faces to the floor And every day the paper boy brings more. And if the dam breaks open many years too soon And if there is no room upon the hill And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too I'll see you on the dark side of the moon. The lunatic is in my head. The lunatic is in my head You raise the blade, you make the change You re-arrange me 'till I'm sane. You lock the door, And throw away the key There's someone in my head but it's not me. And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear You shout and no one seems to hear. And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes I'll see you on the dark side of the moon [This message was edited by Bo Peep & The Sheep on October 18, 2003 at 09:13 AM.]

  24. Sure, it was ridiculous in 1890 too, but a fun story. Let's do some math. 24,000 miles divided by 366 days (counting the date-line) is about 66 miles per day, If the trip took a YEAR, or in a car an hour a day. Taking into effect modern JET travel, given continous flight, it is possible to fly around the earth in about 78 hours, now if the Concorde was used @2000 mph, then 12 hours would be optimistic estimation, of course with an ORBITING vehicle at 17,000 effective GMPH the 90 minutes to circumnavigate is AVERAGE. In reality of course I expect the trip to take months, but I have a couple of TBs that have individually been to Hawaii and back in three weeks, been to Paris and back, three weeks, so extending THAT I think it is POSSIBLE.
