  1. Got a smiley for said cache a week or so ago - it was packed then. When I went back, even more packed (yet, oddly, no new logs).

I've sometimes been silent or vague with logs about placing nice things, to prevent a cache from being raided. But at least a note about checking out the cache would be good.

I did after getting the smiley. Noticed someone had logged their visit as a DNF and swore it was muggled. So, checked it out for myself following day. Still there and noted.

  2. Maybe the other caches he/she has dipped the TB into are too small/cramped

I won't take a TB unless I have a viable plan on where I will place it. And I never make a bahzillion robotic "Visit" logs. That's way obnoxious. It's rare that I log any "Visit" without photos and actual typed text. Have you ever visited some new place and then told friends and family only "Me Took Me To"? I didn't think so. :anibad:

And the cache it's currently in is likely to be not too small nor cramped for it. Go figure.

Yeah.. I had the TB (my own) on person the other day to drop, but didn't log as just visiting. Got a smiley for said cache a week or so ago - it was packed then. When I went back, even more packed (yet, oddly, no new logs). A new, different cache popped up in my immediate area, so got a smiley and dropped there instead.

If I had someone else's TB and were to "dip", I'd try to take pics with it - the visual/living vicariously through an inanimate object  Exhibit A: TB6CBGH

  3. Maybe the other caches he/she has dipped the TB into are too small/cramped?

I had intended on dropping a TB in a nearby cache, but it's PACKED with swag - like, you can barely close the lid. So, chose a different location.

  4. Just switched from an iPhone to a Galaxy S4 (Mini). Granted, I haven't found many caches yet, but I do notice a slight difference between the two. Husband still uses iPhone, which is up-to-date - same carrier, but iPhone seems to take a bit to catch up with mine when using the official Geo app. Overall, both get the job done.

If you're curious about the phones and their operating systems in and of themselves... (Strictly imo) Android phones remind me of a desktop computer. Interface is a little more "busy", which can be off-putting for some people. iPhone/Apple is crisp - clean and simple - but customization very limited (and I'm a customize-r). Don't regret the switch, but did my homework beforehand. (I like referring to CNET for tech product info. And Reddit, lol.)

It's worth noting that the Galaxy S4 mini hardware is equivalent to and in some cases better than the specification of the iPhone5 - but the iPhone costs about four times as much.

Well, worth the cost! And battery life.

  6. I have an idea for a TB -

Basically, the physical TB would be an object (like a figurine, or charm) without the attached, official, Groundspeak tag. Can you purchase just the tracking number (rather than the tag itself) so it can be logged/tracked adequately from Groundspeak? How have some of you attached the tracking numbers to a "bug" that did not have a tag attached?

  7. I've been asked - honesty's the best policy. My response is usually "It's like a treasure hunt", and then I tell whomever to go to the official site if they're still confused/never heard of it.

It seems I luck out in looking suspicious thanks to "Resting Bitch Face". Appears I'm angry - or maybe on a power walk - bowel irregularity.. Whatever the problem, best to keep quiet and mind your own. (BUT I'M ACTUALLY REALLY NICE!)

  8. Thank you, everyone! And to OReviewer for working with me on getting my cache published. (As a side note: he/she never actually expressed they were frustrated/"ticked" with our back-and-forth, rather, I was making an assumption > fearful he/she may become irritated because I personally felt I was flooding them with asinine questions and realize it's peak cache season. Throughout the process he/she was extremely helpful and DID aid in providing me with as much information as possible.) Will be sure to dot every i and cross every t when or if I hide another cache. Bookmarking this thread for reference ;)

To those asking if I use the FREE Geocaching app - yes.

  9. Hi. Me again. I'm having a hell of a time setting up my 2nd cache. Coords are finally correct, but I'm still too close to an existing cache. Get ready for a TL;DR -

My husband and I have been at the cache's location 3x to obtain accurate coordinates. With the exception of my coordinates entered for review a few days ago, all other nearby caches were well over 528 feet away per the official Geocaching app - and I made sure we opened > reopened the app to see that it would still find us on the map > measure that other caches were 528+ feet away. Both of us use different devices, and both were mirror. Also, upon entering the most recent coordinates as if I were creating a new listing (again, to ensure accuracy/distance away from nearby caches) it was NOT in the "unavailable" area/red circle. On the very cusp of a red circle, yes - but area available (unlike with my first coordinates, a message appeared stating area unavailable, and admittedly so, it was in a red circle - but I continued with submitting my listing thinking, eh, worth a shot).

Not trying to get argumentative with the reviewer - just trying to get a clear understanding before I may have to relocate (I'm a bit slow, if you haven't already noticed). FINALLY my coords are correct, but yet again, I am still too close to an existing cache. I explained to the reviewer aforementioned - he/she inquired if I had multi's "filtered" - I didn't, I don't, and I can't. Perhaps due to a non-premium membership? I read through the Fundamental Placement Guide which he/she linked me to. It states, quote, "Non-physical caches or stages, including reference points, trail-head/parking coordinates and/or a virtual stage waypoints, are exempt from this guideline. Additionally, within a single multi-cache or mystery/puzzle cache, there is no minimum required distance between physical elements." The cache I am too close to is a multi. If it is x-amount feet away from a non-physical stage, wouldn't this make my cache exempt from the distance guideline > publishable? (As previously stated, the caches in relation to updated coords showed they were 528+ feet away, and absolutely no option to filter within the Geocache app.)

Any insight or clarification is greatly appreciated before I plead my case to the reviewer (a bit scared - think they're starting to get ticked). And not trying to play a card or get a sympathetic vote here, but please - before anyone decides to tear me apart for being a pain in the arse/idiot, I got into caching because I suffer from dyscalculia - somehow, caching helps ease the anxieties of playing with numbers and maps, etc., even if I don't get it right the first time. I'm determined. Not only is it great for exercising my brain, but my body, too! As a matter of fact, it has reinstated my confidence to pursue college (the math-thing always held me back). And Tetris. I rock at Tetris.

    Thank you!!!

  10. No bug that I know of. As far as numbers, not sure what you mean. I used the app to obtain the coordinates, and the only sequence of numbers that appear to be coordinates are below the date and time pictured (with the little triangle - I'm dumb).

I've used this app previously when hiding a cache, and it provided the coords in a normal-looking format. Settings indicate it's set for "Geocaching".

The curious numbers you see in the corner are directional indications, not coordinates.

Do you have the Android or IOS (iPad/iPhone) version?

Are you trying to view coordinates at a location, or are you trying to type coordinates to direct you to a location?

If you tap the "i" icon in the lower right corner (or first tap the lower right corner to make the icons appear), you then get a menu. Tap "Location", and now you get an icon at your current location, and the Geocaching-style coordinates in the upper left corner. Maybe that's what you're asking?

If you copy cache coordinates from some App (or in the web browser directly from the web site), return to Commander Compass and an "Import Coordinates" window will pop up, and you can make a New Location without typing the coords. If you wish to type them manually, tap the flag icon, then Manage Destinations, then tap the "+" icon, then "Location", and type your new location and save it.

There's a PDF file on their web site, that you should check out.

Thank you, Kunarion! I really appreciate your expertise and time. My thought-to-be coords were meant to log my own cache > get it listed. Unfortunately, a little too late at this point. I'll have to physically go back and relaunch the app and/or utilize "GPS Status" for Android (my husband has an iPhone, so used the Commander app - I've been pretty sick, so he was kind enough at attempting to obtain them when our first attempt at setting the cache failed - coords were too close to another cache, and then lead to someone's driveway, lol).

  11. Would someone please be able to help? Here is the screenshot: http://imgur.com/UpGd0fl

I can't figure out how to convert to MinDec. Something seems off.

    Thanks!

Isn't that the Commander Compass App? See this: http://happymagenta.com/compass/

To have it display the usual Geocaching coords, go to Settings, then Geo Coordinates, then select "Geocaching". The App also has a coordinate converter built-in.

That's it! Still can't get it to convert, though. And app is up-to-date :(

Is there a bug? What are the numbers you're using? I have the full version on iPad, and could try it. If it's a tough problem (and beyond Geocaching), you may have to contact the App's support.

  13. I believe there is nothing which states that this is not allowed however like Gitchee-Gummee said, the distance counter wouldn't start until it reaches the second cache and also, do you really want someone knowing where you live??

As stated, I realize it's an "At Your Own Risk". You'll have to excuse my idiocy - the question was posed late last night, and I've been sick with "walking pneumonia" over the past week, so maybe the codeine was kicking in...

I'm not really concerned, being the distance of where I thought of placing the TB isn't at my front door. Said fence is out a bit. However, not only is it at MY own risk, but thinking logically here, I wouldn't want to pose risk to the cacher picking up the bug. No dogs, or anything that could physically hurt somebody, but quite possibly nosy neighbors.

Long story short, I'll be taking a different, more traditional approach at planting my TB.

Many thanks to all who have responded!

  14. There's nothing in the guidelines prohibiting you from placing one of your trackables somewhere other than a cache or an event. But I'm not sure how effective that would be at "getting it on its way". How would you expect geocachers to find out about the trackable, so they could pick it up before a non-geocacher took it?

My apologies. Being a "newbie" (or in this case: tadpole) to caching and TBs, I was under the initial impression that a TB was something in and of itself - that you create a page just for the TB, with coords to "pickup", and not within a physical cache. Come to think of it, I made the mistake leaving my first TB in my own cache in Sanibel, FL on honeymoon without realizing it required a maintenance plan (we were already on our way home before I could snag it back). Thankfully, a couple were kind enough to rescue and place in a nearby cache which has been on the move ever since.

  15. Can a TB be placed on your OWN property to get it on its way (rather than placing it in your own/another cache)? For example: hanging the TB from my chain link fence for someone to park > pick up > leave in a cache of their choice. Understood this would be an "At Your Own Risk" situation. No dogs or otherwise that may pose danger to other cachers, and I'm home all day working for the government

    Thank you!
