  1. SWAG = Stuff We All Get
  2. I know people with an Etrex they got from e-bay with 400+ finds and I know people with the top of the line equipment with less than 50. One person recently started with a borrowed plain yellow Etrex and finds about 15 a month. A friend bought everything top of the line last month and has found 2. So it really does not matter how good your equipment is, if you do not get out there. Like any hobby start off cheap, and upgrade later. This way you will appreciate what you have. Save as much money as you can on equipment, to pay for Poison Ivy shots.
  3. Please let me know how it preforms. Also, does anyone know if it will plot directions to a lat-n-long instead of address? This would be great to get to the cache.
  4. Instead of paying the considerable amount for Garmin Maps, for my Venture Cx and my laptop I have decided to buy a much cheaper software package. I am considering: Earthmate GPS LT-20 & Street Atlas USA 2008, DVD – BUNDLE. This way I can use the laptop to get me to the caches and the use my GPSr to walk to the cache. Does anyone have any firsthand knowledge of this software (which comes with a GPSr) or any other software? Do these programs work well with Garmin GPSr’s? What are the advantages of buying the cheaper software only without the small included GPSr and using my existing GPSr versus buying the slightly more expensive software package with the GPSr? Street Atlas with the GPSr is $69.95 http://shop.delorme.com/OA_HTML/DELibeCCtd...ction=10091#Box Street Atlas without the GPSr is $39.95 http://shop.delorme.com/OA_HTML/DELibeCCtd...p;section=10121
  5. Can I use POI loader to get around the 500 waypoint limit?
  6. Here are a series of questions regarding my Venture CX. 1. I have seen print screens directly from the screen of a GPSr. Is there some software that allows to screen capture on the GPSr? 2. I have added a 1 gig card to my GPSr. What map software do I need to add to it to get turn by turn directions? 3. If I wanted to use my laptop and the GPSr together could I use cheaper software on my computer to do turn by turn directions? What cheaper mapping program would you suggest? Are there talking turn by turn programs for laptops? 4. I have seen Garmin map programs for sale with a USB GPS. If I purchased this instead of the software alone, would I still be able to install it on my GPSr? (HERE IS THE LINK TO THIS PRODUCT: [ Amazon link removed by moderator - we don't allow referrals in URLs here ] 5. What is the difference in City Navigator and Metroguide? What are the advantages of each? 6. What is POI Loader? 7. What program can I use to enter Coordinates via my computer and then send it to the GPSr?
  7. NO IT’S NOT A PURSE!!! I have a small backpack my wife bought for me. Some may say looks like a teenage girl’s purse, but they would be wrong. It is a manly cache bag. Here is an inventory of what I have in it: 1 gal ziplocks sandwich ziplocks pens pencils logs cache info sheets trade/swag items batteries pocket knife compass What else should I keep in my purse..I mean Cache Bag?
  8. thank you for bringin this to my attention. you deffinatly saved me some money, and you probably saved me a car wreck. the 15.4" screen of my laptop is much more visable than my venture Cx.
  9. If this is installed on my laptop will I still be able to install it on 2 GPSrs?
  10. I like to use AA batteries and retractable Mini USB cables. The USB cables connect GPSr's to DC chargers or computers and are only a dollar at the Dollar Tree. It is a lot cooler to get useful stuff instead of the newest McToy advertising the latest children's movie.
  11. Each local caching group, should start a law enforcement themed TB with the intent of making rounds to every police station and sheriff department and taking pictures with officers at their HQ. When a geocacher moves the travel bug, they can also educate the authorities on the sport (calling it a sport is still funny to me, I also play golf another non-sport). This way law enforcement agencies will learn more, and may be less prejudiced about people lurking in alleyways, carrying munitions cans or walking around grave yards at odd times. It appears to me, geocachers would be a valuable resource in aiding law enforcement in finding children lost in the wilderness or finding meth labs or marijuana crops. Imagine if the police invited your local cache crew to walk from one side of the woods to the other looking for a lost child or some type of contraband. Unlike normal people (yes walking .75 miles through mud, ticks and lime disease, to find McDonald toy filled ammo cans, hidden in the hallows of trees is not normal), cachers could use coordinates to organize the search and cover the area more effectively.

  13. Wal-Mart.com. Super fast shipping and the cheapest place I (that is my wife) found for my Ventue Cx.
  14. I too have a Venture Cx. The Dollar Tree has the retractable USB cables for a dollar each (duh). I bought several. One stays plugged into my laptop, one into the USB cig lighter adapter in my truck (to save batteries and keep the back light on while intransit), and the rest I use as swag (cool very cheap trade item). While you are in the spending mood, Amazon has 1 gig cards for less than $20. If you have downloaded GSAK and it does not connect to your GPSr, just delete the USB drivers for your unit and download/install new ones from Garmin. To find the closed Dollar Tree go to HERE. Just enter your zip code.
  15. You have uncovered Garmin's secret plot to murder canucks. They are trying to practice eugenics. The truth is out there. Don't let them fool you into driving into a river. That won't happen to me a seventh time. I know that no matter what my Venture Cx says, my car will not drive on water, or in mid-air (darn that Harry Potter, and all of J. K. Rowling's lies).
  16. I have a Venture Cx. I have recently bought a 1 gig card for less than twenty bucks. Now I need map software, but am confused by all the available options. What is the difference between ver 8 and ver 8 NT? Also, would I be able to use turn by turn direction from my GPSr with older (that is cheaper) versions of City Nav? Would turn by turn work from the GPSr with ver 4? 5? etc.? So, for all you GPSr sages, please help a lowly newbie with his query.
  17. I am sure glad to hear about GPS glitches, my Venture Cx show my max speed at over 4000 mph. I was beginning to think I was abducted by an alien.
  18. You can buy the retractable Mini-B USB cables from the Dollar Tree for $1. I use them they work fine. Because they are only a buck I even use them as trade swag. Here are the closest Dollar Trees to your home. Or If you want one for free come to Louisiana and find one in a cache. 19. GSAK is set for Venture Cx and USB. The GPSr is set to Garmin. I have downloaded the USB drivers listed above. When I run the updater, it does not detect the GPSr.
  20. Please help! I got a wonderful Christmas present and have enjoyed caching so far. I recently got USB cables for my Venture Cx; downloaded and installed all the Garmin updates for the Venture Cx. I have also downloaded EasyGPS and GSAK. When my GPSr is connected to my computer, it appears in “My Computer” as an accessible drive so I can add files to it. However when I try to receive files from the GPSr with either GSAK or EasyGPS, it says not connected. Is there something I am missing? Also, I want to purchase map programs but can’t currently afford ver 8. Can anyone tell me if the auto routing features of my GPSr will function with older versions? Also if I was to buy ver 4 from Ebay, would it be so old as not to be useful, or need a password for installation? Thanks,
  21. When I arrived near the cache (near the interstate), there was a large piece of expensive looking luggage sitting ten yards from the cache. From the cache location, I saw a sheriff’s officer had someone pulled over. I decided to give it to him and let the authorities take care of it. Now in retrospect (that is now that my wife keeps saying there were millions in drug money in the bag), I wish I had looked in the bag. It is my hope that it was not filled with drugs, explosives, a terrorist communiqué, money or a new Garmin 60 CSx, especially since it now has my finger prints on it.
  22. Someone has just keyed me in on the DollarTree having retractable USB cables, does anyone think that would make a good swag item?
