Yeah. Maps are very nice. I geocache with a Nuvi which only has CityNavigator maps so it's hard caching for me.
Hey! We posted at the same time!

I called GPSCity as today was when the new shipment of 64s's were to come in. They hadn't arrived. On top of that, they checked tracking and didn't know when they would be in stock so I canceled the order.
I was thinking of ordering from The GPS Store, which has good ratings, but remembered that Red90 said that Garmin has free shipping. So I checked to make sure there was no sales tax (there isn't for PA but there is in several other states) and went ahead and ordered. At least from Garmin I figure I'll get a nice fresh unit.
Garmin had a 10% off deal but that was on accessories and maps - not on the GPS. The 60s should show up by UPS in about a week (maybe longer - isn't Garmin way out west somewhere?).
Tell us when you get it. I'm interested in how you like it.

One advantage I like in the touchscreen models is that field notes go much faster, if that's something you use. I make notes while out in the field since I don't usually log finds on my phone and it's so much faster than the buttons. In fact, waypoints with comments, next stage multi coordinates, and field notes are done much faster than pushing buttons to get the letters you need. If you don't use those features, it's not something to worry about. Entering coordinates on a button model isn't really that much slower, just a bit more annoying.
I hadn't thought of that.

Dave.....Thanks for the reply, now looking forward to a new toy at Christmas....RDK
Remember: Even though the 62s is cheaper it doesn't have the 3-axis electric compass.

Interesting - What do you mean by a 'fold-out screen'?
A camera with an articulating LCD screen. Like this :
Wow. I don't know anyone except my photography teacher who knows what an articulating LCD screen is.

Do you know if there are any cases for the Montana?
Would love to have a silicone sleeve to slip over it, but I guess there's not enough demand for the factories in China to mass produce one. The only one I've come across online, never seen it in person or used one, is the GizzMoVest case.

I just found this case.

I already have a used Nuvi 1300 that was a gift. Since my first GPSr was a touchscreen, do you think that when I upgrade I should get another touchscreen GPS? To me it sounds better than buttons.
Also, can you name some stores that let you try out their GPSr's?

(Montana) Touch screen is NOT a capacitive one, nor is the Oregon, so use with gloves
Montana and Oregon 550 and earlier have resistive touchscreens. The screen feels a little soft and flexible.
The Oregon 6xx has a touchscreen. I'm not sure if it is capacitive, but it feels just like a capacitive touchscreen. It has multi-touch capability (pinch - zoom). It's glass-like, smooth and rigid. It works with (some) gloves but is less responsive with them. The same gloves does not work with my phone.
The Montana IS larger than the other two units, but although many want to say it's huge, it's only slighly bigger. It's 1/2 an inch wider (side to side), 1.2 inches longer than the Oregon and 64s and .6 inches shorter than the 64s, .1 inches thicker than the Oregon (same as the 64s), and is the heaviest of the three at 2.8 ozs more than the Oregon and 2.1 more than the 64s. It's even heavier with AA batteries instead of the rechargeable one.If you go by measurements, it may not seem like much, but by percentage, it's quite a lot bigger. Some people love the larger screen. Some people cannot deal with the physical size. Best advice for someone is to go into a store and hold one.
This is the best image I could find online :
Thanks for the advice. Do you know if there are any cases for the Montana?

You should consider getting a GPSr that has a Nuvi-like mode.(Known as 3D perspective or Automotive Mode. Something like the Garmin Montana .

I haven't gotten my 64s yet, either. I contacted GPS City today and asked why a GPS ordered on the 2nd hadn't been shipped yet by the 8th. After a while the guy comes back and says they had a 'stocking error'. I asked if this meant they were out of them and he said yes. Now it was listed as 'in stock' when I ordered and for several days afterward. Just today I saw it wasn't to be in stock until the 10th. Maybe the people who ordered expedited shipping got theirs first or maybe they just goofed. Perhaps with the price drop they had a run on them.
In the meantime, Amazon has raised the price of the 64s to $393! They have the 64st with maps and more memory for $370. That would be an easy decision!
*Sigh* I ask you how you liked the 64s and I find out that there was a problem.

My concern with the touchscreens is usage with gloves and rain.
Using my Oregon 450 (similar screen to Montana) with gloves and when raining is not an issue. I haven't tried the 600 with gloves yet. Some people reported it doesn't work with gloves - unless you use gloves that work with capacitive screens.
For the OP, I suggest you start by asking if you want a touch screen. Some like it, others don't.
If you want a touchscreen, ask if you want / mind the larger size of the Montana. Some don't mind, others do.
Do you really want the camera? If so, you'd want the 64sc, not the 64s, for a button unit. If not, for touchscreen models, look at the Oregon 600 / Montana 600.
I considered these choices and ended up with an Oregon 600, but again, a personal choice. What's right for me may not be right for you.
Well I've heard that the Oregon 6xx series have been "losing" geocaches. The users download geocaches to the unit but the geocaches just do not show.

I'm considering getting one of these GPSRs. I've read the manuals of all of them. Could people tell me their personal preferences? It would be nice if a lot of people replied to this post.

So how did you like your 64s?
-
I just bought a Garmin Oregon 650. I have registered it with Garmin and loaded Communicator 4.2.0. When I go to the link in the help center to add the 30 days to my existing membership, the wheel just spins and never detects my unit. I tried this with both Firefox and Internet Explorer with the same results. I wasn't sure whether to ask in this forum or report it as a bug. Thanks.
I had the same problem.I emailed Groundspeak and they manually added it to my account. I hope this helps!
-
Thanks, either way it's easier than manually entering coords into my GPS V! Still undecided between the two units, or if I even need/want a new one at all. I really like the simple interface on my old one. It may sound silly but I think a lot of the newer devices have kind of a cartoony looking interface, though not as bad as most vehicle navigation units.
You should also consider the Garmin GPSMAP 64s.
-
I purchased the 64s AND the 650 in the end to test them side by side.
The 650 was nice and I liked it a lot...but... 15 minutes in, the dadgum thing locked up. Packed it up and sent it back to Amazon.
I think I am going to go with the 64s, or maybe just CacheSense on my S4.
So? Do you like the 64s? (I'm considering getting it.)
-
So GPSMap has better receiving performance because his antenna is physically bigger, and not because of it's type, right ?
Yeah
-
If this helps your decision, the Oregon 600 and 600t are on sale at gpscity.com. That makes the Oregon cheaper than the 64s, even with the topo maps.
Well, Garmin's price for the GPSMAP 64s and GPSMAP 64st has now dropped lower than the Oregon. My link

Well that's an understatement, you seem to forget the Monterra.
The Monterra is a very expensive GPSr.
-
Thanks!
-
Which one is better? WAAS or GLONASS? If there is a difference. Is one more accurate than another? Also, because GLONASS uses a Russian satellite system can you use in the US?
-
Why aren't you happy with the Oregon 600? I'm asking because I am considering buying one.
-
Either the 64s or the Oregon series. Or, if you want to spend more for a 4 inch touchscreen get a Montana.

What should I use to carry all my geostuff (swag, cache repair bag,CITO bag, etc) in the field? Should I use a backpack or a fanny pack? I don't have that much gear. Just a GPSr and the above items.
What do YOU use?
