  1. We all know how many caches are off the beaten path in the woods. Please Please Please... refrain from geocaching with more than a few people and we could greatly decrease damage and erosion in and around caches. I am tired of stumbling upon a cache trail that leads directly to the cache and has compacted the ground so that its hard for plants to grow.. only to find a log book or cache page that states "we just found this with our whole family all 6 of us"! Please people, think about the cumulative impact of your heavy treading... and tread lightly. I have spoken before about this and in alot of cases caches have had nil environmental impact based upon soil compaction and erosion, but several highly traveled caches are causing harm. Please tread lightly, how easy is it to be discreate around a cache with 4,5,6,+ people? Thanks! . . . . . ..T 3 a |/| B a || d i T 0.. . . . -S [] U T |-| 3 U < |_ i D [] |-| | G |-| []- .... . . . . . . . . .

  5. nicad, lithion, alkaline, you name it these are all dangerous chemical containing batteries... not while there on your shelf or in use but years later after they are decomposing. Please either recycle these (best buy etc...) or look up to find your local household hazardous waste collection day. My city collects it 2 times a year along with any other nasty chemicals (paints solvents etc.). These batteries are regulated by the EPA. If you were a buisness and you throw them away, your violating federal law (RCRA) and probably state laws (Universal Waste Rules). Please be responsible!! Recycle your hazardous wastes! Coincidentally, alkalines are broken down into potassium salts by several recyclers and the potassium salt is sold to animal feed manufacturers. Interesting huh? . . . . . ..T 3 a |/| B a || d i T 0.. . . .

  8. Well it seems a bit over board but if you feel it necessary... i think its your perogitive to chain that puppy down. As far as damage to a tree (living), the stress excerted by a farmer using a living tree as a fencepost and really cranking down wire barbed or otherwise has been shown to not be that detrimental to a tree's health. Even after years and the tree has grown around it and the wire is attached to the tree.. it really shoudnt damage the trees vascular system enough to retard growth. Most of the water / nutrient transport takes place about midway thru the tree. it seems a bit tacky though to those concerned about aethetics. wont it blow the cache's cover? although im sure you could camo it well. . . . . . ..T 3 a |/| B a || d i T 0.. . . .

  10. As an envirionmental engineer / scientist, i have done several hundred hours of brownfield assessment (evaluation of polluted property) and Phase 1 environmental site assessments in this area. I already have property boundry maps for the area and am rather familier with it. I plan on putting these on city propery. Additionally, there is no service crews from the city that make it down to where I am going... in fact the roads get plowed about every week and a half and thats about it... in fact last summer I was working down there and a tree was blocking the road for like almost a week and a half before anyone did anything about it. The city will never find em! I appreciate the point about private property.. it is highly valid.. though some of the best caches i have found have been on private property... at the least I think this fact should be disclosed in the cache page. . . . . . ..T 3 a |/| B a || d i T 0.. . . .

  12. Ok Ok I have found cache's in countless beautiful and remote areas.. ( thats what I usually aim for) i.e. remote areas etc.. Anyway, I am planning on putting out my own caches and was thinking of putting them into areas that contrast starky with the relitively untouched wilderness cache's out there. This neck of the woods would contrast even more starkly than urban caches in cities etc... I am going to aim for caches in relitively safe yet completely obliterated urban wastelands of industrial giants like the steel mill areas and other industrial centers around in Cleveland... im not talking about inside abandoned buildings etc... but in my opinion geocaching has turned me on to some increadibly beautiful areas... and now looking back I think I would like to balance that perspective with a dose of reality... by droping cache's in unique ancient and long abandoned industrial areas showcasing our waste of resouces, pollution and corporate america's utter disreguard for our inner cities industrial spots. Do caches of this nature... that may take you into the very heart of a cities industrial wasteland sound appealing... granted I am aiming for safe spots... i.e. no sketchy charectors hanging out on corners etc... even the ghetto stays out of this neck of the woods! I find the sci fi landscape of these areas facinating... and am aiming to share them with others.... what do you think? . . . . . ..T 3 a |/| B a || d i T 0.. . . .
  13. This sounds reminiscent of what happened at the CVNWR.. the rangers or forest service gets it in their head that this has a detrimental impact on the surroundings. Ive said it before and I will say it again.. I am an environmental engineer. I do impact analysis for a living.. this is a load of malerky. I have been to illegal caches in NPS like yellowstone and other high traffic areas and have seen little damage (in most instances) in fact I would say that going off the beaten track is benificial from an educational perspective.. especiall for children. I could go on and on on this one but i have 5 other posts in the past on this. The fact is that the little rangers in their little park system are never going to look at if from a balanced perspective. their flippen trade publications have roasted this sport with ZERO scientific date... citing only opinion... and not opinion based upon international standards of environmental impact asessment. I would not pull your cache.. make them go fetch it and learn how to use a gps! The only reason park officials devote so much time ot defamation of this hobby is becasue they can easily wrap their arms around it.. as opposed to catching those pesky mountain bikers who dont leave such an easy trail to follow to their destination... the impact from spinning tires on a mntn bike = a tremendous amount of foot traffic.

  17. forgive me if this has been played out b4... but here is a recent email to Jeremy from moi regarding an idea i had (please start at bottom cut and past is a bit ugly) sorry! The message covers recent correspondance between me and Jeremy but the road trip planner idea is mid way what do you all think? would you use it? T 3 a |/| B a || d i T 0 in oHIGHo _____________________attached message_____ You won’t need a transceiver. You’d be downloading the info to your palm as a static file you can look up on the road. Great idea about searching along a route. Programming this will be interesting, but we’re working on some tools like these. Jeremy, I appreciate the follow up. Geochaching is a great thing for a load of people thank you much! Palmable Geocaching sounds sweet.... does that mean I would need a transceiver for my palm? Also, I had one other thought occurring to me while planning a cross country road trip (Cleveland to New Mexico). That is how handy would it be to be able to be able to plug in certain details of a road trip like start and finish, and have a feature on Geocaching tell me all the caches within a set distance from the route (say a route specified from mapquest or something) That way I could just dump in the start and finish locations and be presented with all of my cache options. I for one would use the heck out of a feature like this. I mean as it stands now, if I wanted to find out all the cache's I would be near I would have to punch in all the zips... I know I could use the state search but that would be a bit to broad. Anyway just an idea that occurred to me while planning a cross country caching / road trip. 19. Perhaps you should consider membership as a way to avoid less dedicated cachers. Membership would grant you access to the ever increasing amount of members only cache's that the n00bs cant see! suuuh weee huh?
