  1. I'm am new to caching and learning my way around the boards and such. I have read many of the cache logs at the end of them, but can't figure out what the abbreviations mean... is there a list of them some place, like a key?? :D

    tn = took nothing

    t = took

    ln = left nothing

    l = left

    tftc = thanks for the cache - used to read it as = took fun or that fun

    ftf = first to find

    ftdnf = ?

    i hope that helps :blink:

  2. Greetings,<BR><BR>I'm a ham radio operator with callsign N2RUD. If you're a ham please send a reply, and we'll end up with a list of hams using this site. Perhaps the site administrator will give us a separate forum, called "GPS & Ham Radio". If you like that idea, say so!<BR><BR>Please leave your name and callsign.<BR><BR>Anton<BR><BR><BR>------------------<BR>Anton Ninno, N2RUD<BR>Syracuse, NY 13210<BR><BR>[This message has been edited by Anton (edited 03-10-2001).]<BR><BR>[This message has been edited by Anton (edited 03-12-2001).]

  3. I've been reading some of these posts, and now I feel kinda bad that I left some of my magnets (as well as other things) at my first caches that I found. <BR><BR>I always tried to leave more than I took - but I suspect that while my magnets are a very personal thing to me others will consider them ads - as they promote my Web site. <BR><BR>Will people think I'm uncool because I leave a memento that is actually ME but also acts as an advertisement of sorts? And does it help that I also leave other things as well? <BR><BR>I really enjoy this new hobby, and Spot the travel bug (who actually is an ad for 7Up if you want to get technical) is watching me type wondering what cold cache he'll be placed in next (see his movements if you want more info on cold vs. hot...). But I don't want to think that my magnets will piss people off. icon_confused.gif<!--graemlin::confused:--><BR><BR>[This message was edited by JennK on April 16, 2002 at 10:11 AM.]

    anything asking for money :D

  4. where it is a nuisence to have the laptop with me :D

    So 99% of the time then :D

    I don't even like carrying half the stuff I need to geocache... cache finds can wait until I get home to be logged. Some of them might not get a glowing review if I did it at the find :lol:

    What kind of dog is in your avatar?

    husky, healer, mix with wolf/coyote like markings and build of a pyrenees - his father was rumored to be a hybrid wolf or coyote mix - his mother was a healer, border collie mix

    we lived where there were a lot of coyotes

    he is a layed back guardian dog - he acts like a pyrenees :huh:

    a pack of dogs attacked a nabors horses one time - him , his sister and his brother faught them off - the pack of dogs were a pitbull and 2 rotties plus a couple other dogs - whenever they would try to attack him he put each one on its back causing them to retreat ;)

    another time a abductor tried to grab a couple nabor kids and he held the fool off by letting them hide behind him till i could get the cops on scene B)

  6. I'm confused, did you drop the bug in a cache, or are you still holding it?

    If you dropped the bug, email the person who 'grabbed' it and see it you can grab it back, drop it, and have them pick it up properly. That way the bug will get the mileage...

    Some people just don't wait before grabbing a TB that they find. They just assume we're out there with computer access all day...

    i have broadband celluler internet - UNLIMITED DATA PLAN = no per minute fee - so im usualy able to log all my finds within a minute of each find - exept where theres no phone coverage or where it is a nuisence to have the laptop with me :D

  7. While trying to avoid the glare of your posting I do believe there is at least one cacher who has a TB tattoo. A tad bit more human than I care to copy.

    yes it does - A HUMAN TRAVEL BUG IS A TRAVEL BUG NUMBER ASSIGHNED HUMAN :D

  8. Hello, I have been geocaching for about five years now and been a ham operator for about three years now, in which i hold a general class liscense. I think that most people that do this as a hobby are like me in that you enjoy gps, and all other forms of electronic hobbys... I have often thought that it would be enjoyable to use radio as well as gps in this hobby. I remember one day of caching when this idea really would have been a nice addition to the day.. Me and the two friends i was caching with started to notice a pattern, there was another group of cachers that seemed to be ahead of us by about thirty minutes to an hour on alot of the caches that we found.. I have enjoyed many conversations on local repeaters and simplex frequencys while around home or traveling since becoming a ham operator, and have talked to many people that have similar interests, and i think the same would apply with this hobby if more simple, and cost effective,and basically more realistic to the general public radios were used.. I would like to start this post as an idea, maybe it will go somewhere and become something in the geocaching comunity.. here's the jist <><>... channel 3 no privacy code so set to 0 ... this will enable you to hear all transmissions on this frequency... and last but not least call out using your geocaching nickname, the one used on the website, every hour on the hour and until ten minutes after the hour FROM THE HIGHEST MOST OUT IN THE OPEN PLACE YOU CAN FIND... This will give a narrowed down time to listen for other cachers..<><<><> The national sos radio network http://www.nationalsos.com/ ... has made efforts to organize an emergency channel on frs radios.. i urge to create the same kind of organization in the geocaching community for recreational use as well as cachers in some peril or confusion in an unfamiliar place... The major problem with using frs radios is getting effective range out of them.. So here are Some very valuble tips in using radios more efficiently... hold radio with antenna pointed straight up when transmiting or trying to recieve weak signals, and knowing what times you will be hearing others will give you the chance to get to the highest place you can... THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT with these radios since no after market antennas can be used by fcc rules, and use the monitor button to open the squelch to hear weak signals during the ten minute window every hour.. I hope this catches on as a way to bring together this community out in the real world and would love to see this on the geocaching website as something official.. thanks ..... drew82 GEOCACHE CHANNEL 3 SUB CODE 0 ,,,, Call times( times to say name and location, and to also listen for other cachers) on the hour every hour until ten after the hour from the highest most out in the open spot you can get... Happy Caching!!

    From the Geocaching.com FAQ Page:

    Do you have an FRS/PMR channel to find out if other Geocachers are in the area?

    Yes. The community has decided on channel 2 as the primary for both FRS and PMR, and 12 as the alternate FRS (Family Radio Service) channel and 8 for the alternate PMR (Europe). FRS and PMR radios are longer distance walkie talkies, like the Motorola Talkabout.
