  1. That will certainly depend on the personality of the user and the user's background.

Another valid observation. Rather than a generic landing page, perhaps the first encounter with the website should be a Myer-Briggs profile evaluation, in order to optimize the user experience, with the added bonus of screening out potential mischief makers.

    :laughing::drama::laughing: Now that's an idea!!!

  2. Things that have been tried ... and failed ... and have been removed (after input from the geocaching community):

From the Geocaching Blog dated August 19, 2011 https://www.geocaching.com/blog/2011/08/geocaching-challenges-thanks-for-the-feedback/

I recall going to the Geocaching Block Party on August 20, 2011 and talking to Jeremy about "Challenges" (And I wasn't the only one!)

Then, later this appeared: From the Geocaching Website: http://www.geocaching.com/challenges/default.aspx

Check out this statement on this page:

On an office wall here at HQ is a sign that reads, "Let's make better mistakes tomorrow." By accepting that we will sometimes get it wrong, we can allow ourselves to learn from and imagine new opportunities in the world of Geocaching.

Perhaps there is hope that Markdown will be gone soon ... Or some of the suggestions will be implemented regarding logs created or edited before Feb 2, 2016 (that they would be displayed as they were originally created)!

  4. I received a Garmin Monterra for Christmas, and the first thing my husband did was send me the links that he had for getting good information on how to use his Oregon and other Garmin Devices. They are the same links that the forum lists under "Collection of FAQs" http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=140085. Unfortunately, it says that the subscription has "expired" (they now require a fee to maintain these spaces). Does anyone at Groundspeak have access to this information? It appears that it could have been Downloaded before it expired, but I don't know who would have access to this information.

    Subscription Expired

This wiki's subscription has expired. The wiki will be reactivated once one of the wiki organizers renews the wiki's subscription. For more information, please visit this blog post.

  5. Please let us know:

1.What do you like most about challenge caches?

Requires a bit of planning to make sure that you qualify to sign the cache log as a "Find"

2.What do you not like about challenge caches?

Challenge caches that many people cannot qualify for unless you are in the 10K range of finds or if you are a world traveler!

Like so many with certain words in the title. If you cache in an area where people give their caches unusual names, it works. Even using GSAK with your finds, you can possibly find those you qualify for, but in order to qualify, Cache Owners have to publish new caches with unusual names or strings of unrelated words ... birds, fish, negatives, fruit, zoo animals, A-Z .... and usually create non-trad caches.

Also, it is difficult to ascertain that you can ever qualify for some challenges, since you cannot easily do searches to find caches that will meet the requirements.

3.What would you like to see changed about challenge caches?

That the terrain rating for a challenge cache indicates the difficulty in meeting the requirements, rather than 1 or 1.5. If I have to drive quite a distance in order to meet the requirements, it should be rated higher than a 1.5!

4.If you could describe your favorite challenge cache type, what would it be?

Grid of Puzzles, realistic number of Caches in a day, realistic number of icon types in a day. Or, for example a unique combination of icons: Like Paracelsus' Pi Day Challenge requiring 5 different icon TYPES: 3 of 1, 1 other, 4 of another, 1 other, and 5 of another .... 3.1415 ... A realistic goal for ONE DAY ... only 14 finds, and with only 5 types,

5.What types of challenge caches do you avoid?

Those requiring too many different icons (like 12)in a day, especially when it's easy to clear out a local area of earth/virtual, no webcams within hundreds of miles, limited special icons like HQ or Mega ...

An extraordinary number of caches in a day ... Did a year streak. That's long enough for me. But those who brag about several hundreds of finds in a day, ... Not fun at all!

  6. Just got an email ...

Geocaching HQ has just posted a new topic entitled "Release Notes - April 7, 2015" in forum "Release Notes".

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Read the previous Release Notes (http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=330903)

Well be the first to admit it: contacting other geocachers hasnt always been the easiest thing to do on Geocaching.com. We heard your feedback and thats why weve created the brand new Message Center beta.

With this new feature, you can send and receive messages from Geocaching.com.

Well, for me, it continually asked me to enter my userid and password to log in

... Over and Over and Over again. I didn't get anywhere! I know it's Beta, so I'll try it again in a few hours/days. ....

Yippee, I was able to successfully send and receive a message from Paracelsus!

  7. The newly published caches have a "date placed" of Feburary 21st, so they won't show up in the first pages of search results when organized by date placed. Go past the March caches and you should see them.

The sort is on the date placed, NOT on the date published.

I just spoke to my husband about this, and it appears that it is a CO issue, not a change to Geocaching.

Paracelsus says that he UPDATES the date from the initial date on the cache (when getting a GC number) to the current date when he is ready to submit them, so that it doesn't show an old date.

So, it's a newly published cache, but doesn't show up as "new".

:P Thanks for the clarification. :P Never noticed this before! :P

  8. Those more zoomed-out map tiles are generated less frequently than the more zoomed-in ones. The caches will show up at all levels after a period of time.

The caches in question seem to show up fine in search for me:

    https://www.geocaching.com/play/search/@38.44715,-121.08563?origin=GC5N727&radius=30mi&kw=POTUS

First, when you did your search, you put in the GC number GC5N727. I was searching for all new caches published.

When I go to the page after I've logged in, and it says "Find nearby caches" it says there are 41,673 caches. It shows 2084 pages of caches. When I sort on Date Published and scroll through ... multiple screens past the published date, ... They (The POTUS Caches) DO NOT SHOW UP! This is always how I found new caches nearby, and also those who have recently been found. I know at least ONE POTUS cache was found, but it does not show up.

This may be fine, where you put in One GC number, but with the "New Way", even if you put in the distance, you get the first 1000 caches, and cannot search for newest, or most recently found Unless they are within that magic 1000 number.

Question: Are you now creating indexes of new caches that need to be refreshed periodically? Yesterday, I could not see any POTUS caches. Now I can if I limit to Puzzles, not found by me, within 20 miles (which gets me below 1000 caches available)

  9. On 3/28/15 9:01 am new series of Unknown caches published: My home coordinates: N 38° 34.336 W 121° 20.862

A new geocache was just published:

    Name: 2nd POTUS - John Adams (GC5N727)

    Created by: Blondvoodoo

    Type: Unknown Cache

    Date: 3/28/2015

    Location: California, United States

    Distance: 16.6mi SE (26.7km SE)

    Published by: Nomex

Edit the settings for your Puzzle/Mystery instant notification.

But does not show in caches close to home when sorting by date published.

Map does not show that this series exists until I zoom in close enough. There are 44 caches in this series:

    9cbc81e7-34b5-491a-a84a-61fafc27b101_l.png

Shows lots of new blue ???

    32c9f8e5-69f8-4b3d-94ee-a54063679fcc_l.png

But here, all blue boxes are missing!

Also, these caches do not show up when I use new Search/filter, either. Including filtering on the word "POTUS"

  10. I do not speak Dutch, so I had a hard time ordering my two coins (one for my husband, Paracelsus, and one for myself). I love unique coins and this one really fit the description. I cannot wait for them to arrive! I'm glad I was checking the forum today, or I would have missed out on this opportunity!

  11. Today, on August 27, 2012, the "MyGeocachingProfile.com" stopped showing the stats on the public profile page (again), just displaying the red "X" again.

So, I reran my stats and found that they changed their directory structure that leads your browser to the correct image (jpg) to display on your public profile page.

In order to fix this, you must edit your public profile and delete the html that you had before (which points to a directory "userfiles") and add the html code again, which now points to a directory identified as "userstatistics"

Once you save that, and redisplay your profile, your public profile will display your statistics jpg files correctly!

 I may be retired, but I still love to troubleshoot web problems.

  12. My husband, Paracelsus has been having this problem. I am not. I am on Vista 64 Bit i.e. 9.0.8112.16421 He is on I.E. 8 (some version) on XP. He has cleared cookies, temp files, yadda, yadda, yadda ....

My email sessions are working just fine.

He even gets the error if he manually types in http://coord.info/GCnnnnn in the address bar.

Something to do with the redirect website? The funny thing is that my redirected URL is:

http:// www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCnnnnn. I thought it used to look like:

    http:// www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=ddb9dd9b-e362-4540-b5fe-f672caba9d5b

(That's the link to Leap of Faith cache that someone mentioned in a forum log somewhere GC1HETQ )

Did some code change in the redirect area to now point to wp=GCnnnn instead of guid=GCnnnn

  13. Regarding your comment:

In this day and age of smart phones, they could log them right on the spot.

This will get them to post sooner. Think of it as "doing your taxes". You'll git er done on time!

Seriously, if they are "backlogged" THAT much, maybe they should take a day off caching.

Wow! So now Geocaching is all about smartphones??? Some people still use a dedicated GPSr! :P

Even with a smartphone, I think that some COs appreciate a log that says more than "Thanks for the cache!" or "Fun one for the kids" For me, it is a bit tedious to type a log on that virtual keyboard. I prefer to wait until I am home and write something that will convey the joy of the find, the difficulties with a hunt, the scenery and wildlife in the area, the appreciation of a good puzzle or well-camo'd container.

Oh, and about "doing your taxes?" I guess that's why so many people either wait until the last day to file or need to request an extension! That's a GOOD reason not to lock an archived cache!

  14. Always a great idea to check this forum after one of those notices that says "Geocaching.com will be down at 10:00 on Tuesday ....)

Most changes are a GOOD thing :D ...

Since, in my past life, I tested and  performance tested web applications :o , I can always say that this is not an easy task to coordinate and test for ahead of time. Even the most diligent tester cannot predict every condition that a user will execute. Thanks to all who help identify "bugs" after a release and post the issues here in this forum! The quick response to these posts shows that the  lackeys  are really working hard!

And regarding Data Base Schema Changes ... WOW, if a developer/tester has an issue identifying every bug, imagine how difficult it is to research how the original poster's (old) data will conform to any new schema change.

Good Work! Thanks for working on improvements!

  15. What we have found people doing is taking their collection of travel bugs to geocaching events, so others can "Discover" them. You get to see some Beautiful geocoins that way, touch them, but the owner keeps them in his or her possession.

I just spend $250 on Geocoins for my husband for Christmas, and I hope he does not move ANY OF THEM!

Many of them were the Navigation Tools from coins and pins. (Cosmolabe, Nocturnal, Northern Planisphere. There is no way he would send them out into the world.

Now, he did purchase 5 "Sextant" geocoins that he intends to place in caches (4 of them) as FTF prizes, so the FTF person can keep them, or move them. Again, #5 will stay in his possession.

At the November event of the River City Geocaching and Dining Society, in Sacramento, I discovered 92 Geocoins that are owned by HockeyHiker19. She has an awesome collection!
