  1. In the AF(perhaps other services, too) the subdued organizational patches have COLORS. No, really. Blue, red, copper, green, and more. Not OD green, but a nice green. Can anyone come up with a good reason why the subdued version of this patch should be UGLY UGLY UGLY? don

Never Again Volunteer Yourself THATS NOT BURNT, THATS BAR-B-QUE when you retire is that you now have to go get a real job. As an AF retiree, trust me--you can't live off of retired pay. Makes the house payment, though! don
  3. It's a good unit and will provide years of service for you, if only you'd stop dropping it so much . More expensive units usually have greater memory capacity for adding maps, and may have a larger built-in base map. Some even come with instruments for temperature, compass, and pressure altitude. Nice to have--but definitely don't need'em. So wipe the dust off your STMap and have fun. don
  4. If predicted with bones and tea leaves--un-predictable. If predicted with bones and tea leaves plus skill and cunning, then estimation.

  6. my monitor is displaying it. Can hardly see a thing. Too dark. Is it just me?
  7. to the dictionary companies to have it considered for addition? Merriam-Webster has a place to submit, but requires citations from printed sources. They do not accept Web-based sources. Citations and the use of the word or its inflected variations in at least one sentence. Might be good for us all the way 'round. don
  8. Merriam-Webster OnLine: "The word you've entered isn't in the dictionary. Click on a spelling suggestion below or try again using the Dictionary search box to the right. Suggestions for cotemporaneous: 1. contemporaneous 2. ctenophorans 3. cotoneasters "One entry found for contemporaneous. 9. and both work with the method I described. cotemporaneous-- I'm looking that up! don

  11. small. In SETUP. I selected CLEAR MEMORY, RESET DEFAULT. That worked. The price was the resetting of customized values, like EPE(instead of ETE), beeper function(mine was off), map zoom, etc. No maps or waypoints were lost. Good Luck. don EDIt: Looks like you'll have to reset the clock, too. Other thing noticed was map detail setting, and contrast. All in all, not as bad as completely clearing memory. 12. Same here with the ST Pro, embra. Guys, please describe step-by-step how you created this so we can try to find a fix for you. Just wanted to let you know that now I'm in the same boat as you guys--thanks a lot!! But I will fix it!! don [This message was edited by Cachetrotters on January 17, 2003 at 09:43 AM.] [This message was edited by Cachetrotters on January 17, 2003 at 09:43 AM.]

  14. There is a difference between taking someone to task for activities you mention and being arrogant, self-righteous, and holier-than-thou when someone says “Gee, what is the bearing needle for?”. Edit: The difference between rudeness and honest criticism is command of language, don’t you agree? don [This message was edited by Cachetrotters on January 17, 2003 at 07:27 AM.]
  15. I reviewed the thread and remember following it in mid-December. I also checked the previous thread. I see that some can have a problem with the averaging if they are not aware of possible quirks. It's just that I have not noticed anything with either of my Maggies that I would associate with that function. So, in practical terms, technique or lack of it is the main player when you end up 30 ft the other side of a cache. As for averaging, do you think it is because the system accuracy is so good these days that averaging may only reveal position changes that are below the resolution of the display? don
  16. Unzip it and the executable will be right there in the folder (create a new folder with a name like 'Maggie' and unzip it there so you don't get mixed up).
  17. quote:Originally posted by CreagerStone Family:...it could be one of those "using the wrong word because it sounds more official" like using "centripetal" instead of "centrifugal" or using a completely bogus word like "orientate" or flat out using the wrong word like "expletive" (note, it has NOTHING to do with dirty words). Trilateral refers to having three sides. That's a nice word, but it's actually "triangulation". Depends on use. Centripetal is the more correct when refering to a reference frame rotating a fixed distance about a center. Orientate is definitely Webster fodder. In black and white. (Personally, I don't like the word either.) Expletive is also gets a Webster thumbs-up for being an interjectory profane oath. Trilateral looks like the one word you actually looked up. Does all this sound officious enough? don
  18. a long hint ahead of time using the ROT13 website, print it, fold it and take with me, read if required. Otherwise, I decrypt in the field from the printable cache page I bring. don
  19. quote:Originally posted by Team StitchesOnQuilts:... I would also recommend the Magellan Hula. I think you might be having problems with the averaging function of the Magellan Shannah Not sure how someone could have a problem with an automatic averaging function, but I think the implication is that there is a problem with the GPSr. There are no problems with the Magellan averaging function. If there are, I beg you to provide credible information as evidence of such. don
  20. a Meridian XL GPSr (C. 1994) which sounds similar to the one you describe, except the swivel antenna rotates down along the right side. Still works, but notice that while E-W position is good, N-S position is way off compared to my newer Mag's. don
  21. Living in the rarefied air of the Colorado hilltops has surely rendered him senseless.
  22. Yeah, those were the good times, eh? Managed to get my 20 in, then realized I'd have to get a job! Okay, okay, enough chit-chat. Wanted to pass on what I discovered too late after doing what you are doing. Have a Meridian and STPro. Really saves on cables and software. But get a data/power combo cable and an AC/12V adapter (Radio Shack, $21) instead of just a power cable. This setup allows me to power up in the car and use wall power at the computer when I have the data connection. Reason: can't hook two different cables at same time. When you got the data-only cable hooked up, you are forced to use battery power. Wish I would have done it that way first. Now I have an extra power cable. Which, of course, forced me to buy the Meridian. don
