  1. rectifies it to 12Vdc, all in a neat little package you can pack easy and take with you. The adapter's 120Vac prongs fold up when not in use and it has a receptical (socket) for the cigar-plug end of the GPSr power cable. Works just like in the car. About $21 at Radio Shack. This is what I use at home when connected to the 'puter. Saves on batteries. don
  2. I had not decided to do it, but was wondering what the prevailing winds were. I see the value of keeping the history, but was also concerned whether the DNF was derogatory, geocaching statistics-wise. don
  3. So in effect the receiver does take care of it, through the nav message, but not as a direct result of software knowing how many to add(written into the code, etc.). Just knows to add what's in the message. don
  4. Is it fair to delete a DNF if you've gone back after a few weeks and found and logged it? don
  5. If I'm not mistaken, leap seconds are not added to the GPS clocks. When the Earth Rotation Service adds leap seconds, only the UTC system earthside gets it. Receiver software takes care of the mismatch, yes? If a leap second were added this year(but it looks like it won't be), then would we get a new software release for just that? As for receiver time setting, I only had to tell the GPSr what the hour was. Not minutes/secs. don
  6. I'm thinking that's why they call it a 'proximity alarm', instead of a 'high precision, pinpoint accuracy, stop-on-a-dime alarm'. It's just there to let you know that you are in the area. I wonder if it also is correlated to the published specification when Selective Availability was on. You could call Magellan and ask if there have been any software updates--in fact, check the website. They do list the ColorTrak, so there may be one. don
  7. Both of mine float and are waterproof(tested!) and the STPro's 23 mb of memory holds all of southern California and then some. The topo maps you want to use will have to come from Garmin or Magellan, and can only be used for their own products. No others will work. Whether you choose Garmin, Magellan, or Brand X, the 'GPS system' will determine how well it seems to work. This is followed closely by operator error/inexperience. Only rarely can the handheld receiver alone be held to blame. don
  8. I have both an ST Pro and the Merigreen(basic Meridian GPS). I guess the biggest difference between them is the size. Both of them can be held and operated with just one hand. Do it all the time. Both are upgradable (were you talking about the mapping?), with the Meridian able to take larger maps IF you spend money on the expandable memory. Both perform well. I do not miss the smaller base map of the Merigreen vs. the Map. Here is an example from our last cache log in wide open sky. Milage varies under canopy for any GPSr. The Meridian GPS can be had for about $130. Haven't been able to evaluate any Garmins. Perhaps one day I'll get one. don
  9. quote:Originally posted by Team Madison:Hey...I'm a "stay at home mom"...where do I sign up to do articles for the new magazine??? ...unless you're going to write about how you used your GPSr to hunt down the kids around the house all day, just what will you write about? don
  10. Well, a flip response to the question would be: The best PDA under $200 dollars is the one that's been sitting on your desk for over a year collecting dust and after you read about paperless caching you put 2 new batteries in it and turn it on, update the operating system to 3.5.3, order a second HotSync cable for $19.95 so you can also use it at work to justify the expense of the 2 new batteries, load Plucker, get some files spun with GPXSpinner, shoot them to the Palm, and POOF! you're in business. Then you're cookin' on all four burners. Pheww. don [This message was edited by Cachetrotters on January 23, 2003 at 06:13 PM.]
  11. There are 2 steps given after the query is spun and the files readied for d/l. The implication is that they are ordered instructions--do step 1, then do step 2. But if I'm directing Plucker to the URL/file (in red) in step 2, why do I need to d/l the file in step 1? oops. The second step is to get the HTML pages to plucker. But still, why step 1. What can I do with that file? don
  12. a rubber O-ring would fit the bill, if you had no Dremel tool available. They come in various thicknesses and sizes and can be glued down as well as anything, I reckon. If it does get knocked off, you wouldn't have to Dremel out another one. Just stick another O-ring on. don
  13. Seems to be working very well. This will be a treat to be able to go caching on the spur-of-the-moment when out and about. Great job, Lil' Devil! Super heavily edited to avoid embarassment don [This message was edited by Cachetrotters on January 20, 2003 at 07:21 PM.]
  14. Is there any reason I couldn't use an older Palm IIIxe (8mb) pda? Edit: Answering my own question, yep, works fine. They can be had for 80 bucks online. It has 8mb memory. I dusted off mine and now have a reasonably good reason to use it. don [This message was edited by Cachetrotters on January 20, 2003 at 07:51 PM.]
  15. Quoted from the Unabridged Merriam-Webster OnLine: "Word: geotourism Citation: The concept of sustainable tourism is not new to the travel industry. In the past, its primary concern was to sustain balance with the ecological environment and minimize impact upon it by mass-market tourism. The term "geotourism" is closely related, but is concerned instead with preserving a destination's geographic character—the entire combination of natural and human attributes that make one place distinct from another. Geotourism encompasses both cultural and environmental concerns regarding travel, as well as the local impact tourism has upon communities and their individual economies and lifestyles. Source: Travel Industry Association of America and National Geographic Traveler. The Geotourism Study. Washington, DC: Travel Industry Association of America, 2001. 1. Submitted by: Marilyn Terrell of VA" An example of the format for submission to these folks. Others may differ. don
  16. I have and use SA Watch, and just downloaded the VisualGPS. I'll check it out. don
  17. Had 4.03 installed for about a month now and have seen nothing like you describe. don
  18. Tell her you are disappointed. You thought for sure she would be more adventurous and open-minded than your girlfriend....
  19. After visiting this page at China Lake and seeing the capability to predict satellite coverage, and giving the resultant four best satellites by number, GDOP, HDOP, etc., I was wondering if there would be an advantage to forcing the receiver to use only those birds. Or do the current commercial(consumer) receivers do this automatically now by tracking all that they see and calculating the 4 best themselves? don
  20. It's true. In the Country Club we didn't have to do much skulking about in the wild. We just had to sit at our desks and look good! (Though I was an avionics tech, and therefore more skilled than those desk jockeys. ) don edit: had to change a word or two. 21. my Taurus is a subdued blaze white ('cause it's very dirty) , and thankfully, I no longer wear neckties. Perhaps I used two-too-many 'ugly's' when describing the color scheme . As for the TAC patch, it's the real McCoy, colors and all, though the colors are not reproduced quite accurately. As I eyeball the original in front of me, the red is much deeper, with hints of purple, and the green is darker. As for differences in interpretation of subdued, perhaps it is due to our respective service experience. Here is the original color scheme for comparison, though. In fact, this is the rendition of red that should be in the subdued patch above. An example of blue on OD. don [This message was edited by Cachetrotters on January 19, 2003 at 09:31 AM.]
  22. Here is an example of subdued colors that can complement OD and black, while not standing out. The photo doesn't due it justice, but you can see the effect. I am just concerned that we would give the wrong impression to those who know nothing about Geocaching. don
  23. Please don't confuse my disdain of OD (lived with it for 20 yrs.) with the subdued patch itself. I am indeed in support of the subdued patch, but I believe that the OD green on black is actually too militaristic. I do appreciate, now that you've explained it, that there were constraints on your initial layout, and that compromises needed to be made to get it done. I would hope that if you get approval, you will consider investigating the other subdued colors available. I see no reason the patch couldn't be 4-colored in the new version, while still not attracting too much attention. I'd show you an example of my TAC patch if only I could figure out how to.... don
