  1. There are several other threads that talk of this ad nauseam. Magellan and Garmin both leave something to be desired. But it's the best you're going to get for your GPSr's for now. don
  2. quote:Originally posted by Lyra:And on another note, how come "flammable" and "inflammable" mean the same thing? According to my Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary, flammable is the preferred word in technical applications, such as: "The shotglasses lined up on the bar may contain flammable liquids. But, if you refuse my invitation to drink them with me, that would lead to an inflammable situation." don
  3. quote:Originally posted by BrianSnat (paraphrased for clarity):...a few what-if's, some irrational over-the-top examples, etc. etc.... Doesn't seem normal for BrianSnat. Sure you didn't hijack his identity?
  4. Bought two Merigreens at Xmas, and gave one to my sister in Ohio(I am also from there). Both work great. You need the standard SD card. I don't believe the SD Multimedia card will work, but could be wrong. Also, I think the yellow is for outside North America. Someplace, somewhere, I read a post on some forum from a gal in South America who had a question about her yellow; Argentina, perhaps. Anyway, that's why I was thinking not N.A. Have not used Delorme products. don [This message was edited by Cachetrotters on January 31, 2003 at 07:47 PM.]
  5. Hey! Where'd all my clutter go? You know I can't work without clutter... Worked with TOPO and Merigreen, and St.& Dest. and STPro. Looks great! Where do we send the money...? don
  6. That really is sad, but you were certainly the weakest link in that chain of events! Not a good reason to say that all shotglasses in any cache would be a bad idea, and that, I believe, was the question. I say shot glasses in good condition should be just fine (unless there are self-control issues while driving after you leave the cache). don
  7. I've used the majority of them just to see how they worked. The one setting that you definitely don't need is the VMG, or 'velocity made good'. Most useful when boating or airborn. All of my screens have at least both bearing and distance. The second least useful bit of data when close to the cache is speed. Only a few of my screens display it. I know how fast I walk, and I don't need a speedometer to tell me I'm standing still. I do like, however, to see my EPE, which tells me how confident I can be in the indicated distance. don
  8. quote:Originally posted by embra:...You need to go to 4 levels to get the hints.... I have Plucker set to 3 levels and get the word HINT as hypertext that takes me directly to the decyphered hint. What would be the difference between my 3 and your 4 levels? don
  9. It's not that clear cut to me. My response is that I would do it for the novelty IF I already had that equipment. But I would not go purchase it just to do a few caches. So it seems your question might be, of those who DO have the required equipment, how many would hunt my cache? don
  10. Nathanstl, Sure hope you didn't put 4.02 into your SporTrack. The upgrade version for SporTrack is 4.03. Meridian has the version 4.02. Go get 4.03 for your model of SporTrack and see if you can load it now. And v 3.12 was the previous version of Meridian, also. don
  11. quote:Originally posted by nathanstl: I'm getting more like 5-7 hours out of them.... nathanstl I think it's time for you to invest in some external power. You should be getting more time. We've done 18+ caches since November with our STPro and Meridian. Both are on their third set. It's silly to drive around the countryside on battery power. Are you using the backlight all the time? Also, make sure the batteries are a reputable brand. One last thing: it doesn't sound right that NiMH are giving you longer performance times than good alkalines. And, three sets of batteries in 1.5 days?? Are you exagerating a teeny bit on both ends? don
  12. popupcop, sounds like a good idea. I have MS Word installed, plus Merriam-Webster dictionary. Otherwise, I'd give it a try. But rest assured, you are definitely not the only one in these forums that need help. don [This message was edited by Cachetrotters on January 30, 2003 at 12:14 PM.]
  13. Perhaps we should all submit our college transcripts or other authoritative certification to be evaluated by Groundspeak's highly trained professionals. Then, if you wish to place a cache involving math, or wish to hunt a cache where you have to do math, you can be pre-qualified so as to not screw things up on either end.... don
  14. wouldn't have all this conjecture. A second is a second--a unit of time. Period. An arc-second is an angular measure, and is called that to avoid confusion. Period. The cache owner should specify, and if they are going to give instructions like that, it should be mandatory that the owner have the capacity to know the difference. We need testing! BloenCustoms, you said a mouthful, but I surely did not get the idea. don
  15. quote:Originally posted by Rich in NEPA:The Pointer screen (which everyone seems to refer to as the Compass screen) tends to flip-flop too erratically.... Rich, what I call the compass screen is a close cousin to the Horizontal Situation Indicator (HSI) in aircraft (don't confuse with Attitude Direction Indicator(ADI) which shows pitch, roll, and heading), with the same flat compass card, course to steer pointer operating independently of the card but read against it, distance to go in units of interest, etc. They just added the moon and sun. Perhaps I shall now call it the HSI nav screen. Think it will catch on? don
  16. thread before going any further. It is one of several common threads. don
  17. Before the days of GPSr's having built-in magnetometers, it was commonly the 'compass' screen. don
  18. quote:Originally posted by Lyra:Deleting a cache log is the same as "permanently archiving" it. I'm not sure how you got around to interpreting 'permanently archived' as deleting. I interpret those words differently, especially in the context of the post. don {Removed} [This message was edited by Cachetrotters on January 26, 2003 at 01:16 PM.]
  19. Deleting and archiving are not the same thing. Hoping that you mean you want to monument the log--'set it in stone so as to not be alterable', so-to-speak--and not delete it (to erase completely forever), then just leave it alone. It already is, in effect, archived. Since only you can change it, and since you don't want to change it, just ignor the options. They don't bother you that much, do they? don
  20. While some features are nice to have when requesting a sort on a cache list, I think we could go too far. If someone is in such a big hurry that they need to find caches along a corridor of a route they plan to take that they can't do the "legwork/homework" themselves, then how in the world will they have time to go caching during their trip? How UNFUN this all sounds. Could've planned half the trip in the time it took to create the topic.... don
  21. We use the map screen to get to the general area, especially in the city, then switch to the (moving) compass and let the steering info guide us close, and finally when the needle starts hunting because we're too close, we use the distance window combined with visual observation of the immediate area(<50ft). All of this is possible because we set the cache (destination) as the GOTO. But I don't seem to recall the Magellan's having a GOTO screen. All of this is to say I'm not sure what the original question was really trying to ask. If you don't GOTO, then might as well use a compass and paper map instead of any GPSr map or nav screen. don
  22. quote:Originally posted by Prime Suspect:.... the original poster wanted the _granularity_ of measurements in feet. Now that's an interesting way to express an interval of measurement. Has a certain savoir-faire flair to it. don
  23. Don't know about the older models, but the SportTrack Pro and Meridian share the same cables. You should have received a data cable with your unit. Does it fit properly into the mount? Does it look like the older power cable you have? don
  24. nothing. See, aren't I generous? The hole has a sliding gate. You will see the pin to lift it. Slide it up and put your plug in, and let the gate come down. It will engage some grooves to keep it in place. don PS-- If you aren't already, position the mount and cradle so that it hangs straight down from the windshield, with the suction cups at about rear-view mirror height. Orders of magnitude more stable and vibration-free. [This message was edited by Cachetrotters on January 24, 2003 at 06:26 PM.]
