Bumble(It bounces!), Thanks for the link....That's the one on the left. Pretty interesting reading. It all makes sense since I found it along an abandoned railroad bed. This railroad was used as a passenger railway. I'm nearly fifty and never remember any trains running on this line. I would guess that this railway went bankrupt in the 30's. May not be worth anything, but has a pretty interesting story since I'm an electrician by trade. Funny that you mention these famous people, Surveytech. Today I did a cache and while wanderin' aimlessly in State Park(never did find the cache), I came upon what looked like a miniature 2 oz. Coke bottle......so I picked it up and there was an embossed inscription on it....it read, I kept it for a momento (Cache in, trash out!) 'cause it was an interesting find even though I never heard of battery oil???? "I seen Elvis making crop circles"......................Are the Soprano's on yet?

Every mark I find is still as thrilling as the first. Most that I find are earned as in my region there are NO witness posts. Some are buried under brush and the snow as of late doesn't help either. Today, I found 2 that were logged, in the 50's by the NGS as "mark not found"....this was like finding my first. Each "Hunt" is different! Some are by car, some are on foot, some on ATV, some are found by accident. After a photo Op with the mark, I try to return the mark as found. In other words, if it was covered with 6" of dirt and brush, well the 6" goes back over it. Makes for the next benchmarker the same quest as I had. Just as the description says it was there at an earlier date. Even my pics that I take, I try to prevent "spoilers". 99% of the time, I end up being first finder in 20-30 years! What a rush!......OK, OK! Back to reality! Benchmarking is my bag and when time permits, I'll do a cache or two. Today I found two benchmarks reported by the NGS in 1954 as a "no find". Both turned out to be in good condition and as described. Should I report these to the NGS or just chalk them up in my "found" column? They really didn't take that much to find, I found both within a half-hour and that included 5mi. drive time. Wow! When do Dudes have time to learn all this stuff! Maybe I'm confused....Maybe?...Let me say, I am confused! I think I'm confusing the terms: NGS, U.S. Coastal and Geodetic Survey and U.S.G.S. Any help to set me straight? Think I'm gonna have to "click" the mouse a little more on this subject as I'm getting very interested. Well it's definitly a NGS disc as it's inscribed so. It also has the triangle you speak of. It sets on a elevated rock outcrop along a abandoned railroad bed. Someone recently painted(in white) a huge 6' "T" with the disc being in the center. FWIW, it is listed on a 1950's topo I have. I believe it's a localized high peak although not the highest on the map. The only letters legible on the disc were "T.T. 8xx 1932" (x being illegible)It is near a town called Mountaintop(One word).......M(T).(T)op Again you Dudes come thru with some great info, THANKS! Today, while benchmark hunting I happen to stumble upon a trangulation disc, so I marked the point so I could access geocaching.com to find out what was the identity of the disc. Well, I get home and plug the coordinates in and I get nothing that matches. Are there discs set by NGS that are not in geocaching.com's database? BTW, There was also a bolt about one foot east of the triangulation disc. I thought that maybe I marked it wrong so I did a search using the ZIP code and still nothing. Any ideas? I'm new to this game and don't cache when there is snow on the ground. There are plenty caches that I'm dying to try. I don't want to compromise(sp?) the location or have the owner PO'd 'cause I made tracks to the location. There are plenty of benchmarks to hunt in the mean time.....most of which are in public places right under the public's nose. My first find, on the way to the coordinates it did begin to snow and I thought of abandoning it but after a long pack, I found the cache then covered my tracks with a pine bough. There was only a dusting. This is a great game and I try to be considerate to fellow cachers and cache owners. "I seen Elvis making crop circles"......................Are the Soprano's on yet?

As a newbie, I've been monitoring this thread with much interest. I've seen where some geocache'rs carry "Lightsticks". Well the other day I was at one of these "Hardcore, Y2K" military surplus outlets, and I picked up some military version "lightsticks". I must say that I was quite inpressed with the sticks. Although they did not provide enough light to navigate by, they did light/glow my nightstand(I put it there to keep a eye on it during the night)........(44hrs go by)........The stick is still glowing faintly! and it's only supposed to be an 8hr stick. On the subject of being "Markwelled" from a newbie standpoint, my contributions to this forum have being minimal compared to my learning from this forum. A few of my posts have been "Markwelled" but in a tactful sense. There was the link but also followed up with an answer to my question. The link only provided more info. I can see where some would be offended as in a response that only refers to using the "search" option. It's almost like saying, "Don't be so #%*@'n lazy, do a search on the topic!" Elcamino and Survey, Thanks for the replies! I used the word "retired" for lack of a better word. Some of my benchmark hunting areas encompass abandoned railway beds, bridges, etc. When I read the description and go to the area, "no bridge" to be found.....and I know from when I was a kid that there used to be one there. On these same "No find" benchmarks, some mention Recovered by NGS, etc. and figured it meant that it was given back, retired(for lack of better terms) to the Coastal and Geodetic dudes. I've seen this a hundred times........What does "recovery note" exactly mean? Does it mean that the mark was recovered and retired(meaning, no more!)or it it a way of saying that it was found in it's location? Sorry for the lame question! I've seen recovery notes by NGS and also by LOCENGFIRM (or something like that) Reason I ask this is because I've also seen "Descrition by NGS" usually but not always followed up by a "Recovery note". 10 times out of 10 the structure that mark was originally set is non-existant. Man, ALL these tips are excellent!!!! Makes the difference between a "Pleasureable" and a "Miserable" hunt. Wait!...Wait! Sorry, there is no such thing as "Miserable" hunt >>Watch your speed from cache to cache, It could get you a speeding ticket!! I just found out!!! $80.00!!! Brian, I too, am a newbie at this GREAT pasttime. I wouldn't give up on your Garnin yet! Find a friend with another GPSr and compare. In my minute wisdom about this game(Geocaching), finding the coordinates is the easy part. Finding the cache is the hard part. GoodLuck, Garminator PS Check the coordinates as I was recently on a benchmark hunt which the topos said it's in the area but my etrex said it was 103 miles away! Consequently, I never found the mark.
