  1. Contrary to popular belief...

The Mason-Dixon Line is NOT the demarkation line between the NORTH & SOUTH...

It was surveyed between 1763 and 1767 by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon in the resolution of a border dispute between the British colonies of Pennsylvania & Maryland.

It also marked the northern most line where salvery was in dispute...

(and Maryland sided with the anti-slavery states)...

To my knowledge, the slavery issue nor the Mason-Dixon Line does not enter into the GEOGRAPHICAL NORTH & SOUTH issue...

(if that were the case... half of Ohio, Indiana & Illinois would be in the SOUTH)...

and we are talking Northeast vs. Mid-Atlantic here anyway...

The Mid-Atlantic states are comprised of states above and below the Mason-Dixon Line...

Pure semantics... and not really worthy of discussion here...

    It just doesn't matter...

  2. Really, this has always been just the New Jersey forum, anyways. They just let other folks post here once in a while, if you don't get too far out of line. :drama:

I wondered about that. Are there really that many more of us in Jersey, or is it more that we don't shut up? :drama:

Who can understand us? We have no accent...

(FYI...people from New Jersey call it "New Jersey"...

people from Brooklyn call it "Joysey"...

people from the Bronx call it "da place across da bridge"...

people from Philladelphia call it "the way to get to Atlantic City")...

    :drama::blink::o:):D

May as well be Greek to anyone else...

  3. living below the Mason-Dixon line I always thought Virginia was in the south or at least the southeast or mid-atlantic region but I guess not according to Groundspeak. Time to trade in my southern accent for a more traditional Boston Drawl or DownEast Ayuh....can't get there from "he-ah"

My guess is that since they have a New England section...

They chose Northeast for the Mid-Atlantic states...

Anyway... who cares? You have a forum...

    It's just a name...

They could call it "Teddy" for all I care...

BTW Y'awl... the "more traditional Boston Drawl or DownEast Ayuh" would put you in the New England Forums...

Definately NOT the New Yawk to Vuhr-ginny Northeast Forums...

  4. Very interesting ideas. To sum up the posts above... there are really 3 options for a cache:

-Place the 50-waypoint cache in a circle around the city

-Place multiple multis that lead to a bonus cache

-Place a single many-waypoint multi as a tour through the mountains

I'm leaning towards the multiple multis (I like the Geocache Golf idea).

But, I'm also going to look into placing a multi through the remote area of the mountains I will be hiking and climbing this summer.

Many posts indicate that I won't get many visitors, if any at all. I want to make a cache that is "Epic" to say the least. I have some other "Epic" ideas, and this was just one.

Any ideas you all can give me for an "Epic" cache? If you give me the idea, I can make it happen!

    Thanks!

    Kojones

There you have it... multiple multi's that all add to a final "?" cache...

Have to do all the multi's to get clues for the Final "?" cache...

Now that is a caching series we would do...

  5. Our most intriguing was Magoo's Multi in the Mud...

archived now, because it was a bear to maintain...

Not due to muggles necessarily, but the fact it was in a flood plain, that was under water a lot of the time...

and the stages took a real beating from the elements...

It was 6 stages and took Deb & I 17 hours to find all 6 stages...

    In many, many visits...

Deb would go at lunch time some days on her own...

I don't recall just how many visits we made, but overall it took 17 hours of searching...

Over the course of a few weeks...

It was one of the best & most rewarding caches we have ever done...

The difficulty rating of 4 was right on spot...

And we got to see the ALBINO DEER TOO!!!

    Considering this cache proposal...

    I agree with briansnat...

a 50 stage multi would be near impossible to maintain...

Muggles, environment, etc. would all have to be considered...

I could see multiple stages go missing all the time, and make the search just a waste of time...

and a waste of time for the cache owner...

Why spend all the time and effort, when, if you are lucky...

You will get one, maybe two cachers that would even consider trying it?

You might get more people attempting the cache if you put $1000 in unmarked $100 bills as a FTF prize...

But once found... All interest would go down south...

I have a feeling you would have a very hard time even getting the cache approved by a reviewer...

All the work to place it and a good chance it will not be approved???

Waste of a lot of time & effort...

  6. Way too long.

One of the things I think of when placing a cache is ---- how will this alter the possibility of us or other cachers placing caches in this area in the future???

    That is a good point...

we have a beautiful local park that is locked out for anyone else to place a cache,

because there are two multi's there that cover the entire area...

247 acres, with two caches... and no more can be placed there...

  7. we have used a "stamp pad" type...

Have not used it in a while, as the ink is low, but it is pretty kool...

another option I have seen, is a customized "return label" type...

like for a return address on a snail mail...

    Peel & stick...

They are very cheap to have made...

    anyway... to answer your question...

our stamp pad has a picx of a sailboat...

our geocaching name & our e-mail address...

Lately we have seen a lot of "business card" types...

    Clever pictures & ID...

  8. When the NPS stopped allowing caches a long time ago, most of them did not ask for the old caches to be removed. I would take that mentality and just let the owners of those caches know what you were told and fina a different place.

That's another funny thing...I keep seeing posts saying the NPS has banned all geocaches, but I was looking at their

policy letter from October 19,2007 and it seems that they can be approved on a case-by-case basis (they even mention www.geocaching.com).

Hey that's new, to me anyway...

they have always dis-allowed caches on the basis of a rule that says...

"no littering" or something to that effect...

I think when you come down to it caches were banned, because they don't want any bushwhacking...

i.e. possibility of sensitive environments being jeopardized...

and if they now do allow it with approval, it will cost $$$ out of the budget...

and manpower they just don't have...

  9. Cacahe approvers are volunteers...

and each has different interpretations of the "rules"...

Personally I try not to referance other caches that have been approved by another approver...

(I have done this in the past, and it just doesn't get you anywhere, and may have the downside of another cachers successful cache being archived)...

The approvers are not there to dis-approve your cache...

They want to have them approved...

but will require you to stay within the guidelines, as they individually interpret them...

Basiclly, just deal with the approver you are working with...

and either justify your cache, on it's own merits, to their requirements...

or chalk it up, and say "Oh well" and find another location...

I have always found that the approvers will eventually approve a cache after good justification...

(we have had a couple dis-approved, and there was alwys a good reason that we had overlooked)...

Keep in mind, this may take multiple e-mails...

Also... don't get mad if you dis-agree with an approvers reasons for dis-allowing...

That will get you no where...

These volunteers don't need the grief, with all the caches they have to monitor...

Their time is valuable to themselves also...

if it is really important to you (I can't see a cache being that important though)...

You can always appeal to Groundspeak...

BUT that would have to be really good complaint...

I would never go that route... a cache dis-allowed is just not worth becoming a PITA...

  10. ...Rental homes do NOT constitute PUBLIC ACCESS...

Depends on the location. Most rental communities have large common areas and large parking areas that are not gated .I'd not think twice about walking my dog, playing frisbee or cutting a corner to get to the quickie mart.

I'll have to get with the accused and see which cache this is. He says I found it but I can't recall it by looking a a list of common finds.

They did state the property was posted... "No Trespassing"...

Irregardless... Rental properties, unless owned by municipality or state, and posted as PUBLIC USAGE...

Should always be assumed as being PRIVATE PROPERTY, and treated accordingly...

I don't care where it is located...

If there is any doubt... look for another access route...

  11. This entire thread is a great example of why these types of caches are NOT A GOOD IDEA. There are too many unknowns.

The possiblity of getting a shotgun pointed at me is reason enough to not even attempt these types of caches.

From what I have read... there is nothing wrong with "this type of cache"...

There are litterally hundreds like this in NJ...

    300' walk thru Private Property...

or .0.25 mi. walk thru the park...

GPS driving directions will bring you to the closest point...

It's common sense that there MUST be another way in,

unless it is "specifically stated on the cache page" that the private property owners permission has been given to traverse the property...

Rental homes do NOT constitute PUBLIC ACCESS...

  12. A night bonfire would be cool, but all of those sound good. Any preliminary ideas for the location?

a bonfire in new jersey?:):D

don't get me wrong it'd be cool, but where??

A picnic event sounds like a great idea :)

We have an idea for a spot for a bonfire, but the # of people would be a definate deciding factor...

We only have one bathroom on the first floor... :D

we do have a lot of bushes though!!! :):D;)

realisically, anything over twenty people would be a major problem...

I do think a bonfire event would be kool...

I'll look for some places that may be OK with that, and that will accomodate 50-70+ people...

we do have a trailer and plenty of firewood to bring... really... more than enough firewood...

and I could double that amount if I got out the chainsaw and cut up all the deadfall around here...

If anyone has a suggestion for a spot... let us know!

  13. well it's not so much that I'm use to using Excel, I can certainly learn another program without a problem. I just notice that there are limitations with what I have to work with at the time. Going completely paperless right now isn't really an option since I'm not going to buy another electronic gizmo to store all my cache info. If I am going to continue to use paper I'd rather use less of it and have more information on hand, hence the trying to fit everything into an excel sheet including hints which I can then print out and take with me.

Then I'd do as we do...

    a combination of City Navigator...

    GSAK...

and printing the caches using the PDF format from the cache pages...

(using that option will usually keep printouts to one page)....

Or we just load the coordinates to our GPSr's and call our son on our cell phone, to read us the cache description and hints as we are looking for them...

    The phone-a-friend option...
