I'd say 48 hours should be max How about after 36 hours you get 2 points instead of 3 for retrieving and dropping a flag. Then 1 point for every 12 hours after that. Yes... competition is good... BUT... if the competition uses guidelines that are much more lax than GC.com... Then the whole sport is in jeopardy, because of one upstart competitor, who allows caches in restricted or rediculous spots... (come on, a cache in the middle of the Sound that is just a LAT/LON!!! With no actual structure or redeming quality? I could see it if the spot was a great fishing secret... but this is not the case here... The first one that BMSquared showed the picture of looks like a "black racer"... common in NJ & Pa... The second pic (posted by The Leprachauns)... not sure, but looks like it may be poisonus... Could be a Copperhead as they have rather distinctive markings... This one looks like it has the right scale patterns, although the colors are darker... From what I understand... most poisonus snakes have a wide head ( to accomodate the venom glands)... I don't believe either are cottonmouths as they are native in S. Carolina and south of there...

Just stumbled on this site http://www.navicache.com/ and it looks like these are caches outside the Groundspeak umbrella??? Anyone else ever heard fo it? Looks like different rules... i.e. they have a cache listed HERE that is just a LAT/LON point off Plum Island on the Ferry Ride from New London. Ct to Orient Pt, NY... it's just a point on the water... There's nothing there but water...

Mmmmmmmm... the NY Falg is going deeper and deeper into those dark areas of NJ that NJ'ers don't even dare to go to... Unless of course you are a poisionus snake... They love it there! Anyone from LI have a pet mongoose? OK... On a serious note... really... be careful with your dog in snake areas... They are the ones most often bitten... Keep 'em on a short leash... I have found both copperheads and timber rattlers on my own backyard...

There's also reports of Copperheads in NJ swamps... Hope you guys don't mind spiders & snakes...

JMB... The Pine Barrens in NJ are the size of all of LI... very similar, but with more swamps... and MUCH larger and deeper... Then of course there's the Jersey Devil that lives there... And keep clear of any stills you may come across... They may think you are a "Revenuer"...

The most obvious reason for an attack this time of year is that it probably was a female bear with cubs in the area... If they percieve you as a potential threat to the cubs, they will attack...
