A couple of weeks ago, I was up in the hills. It was a bit damp, no rain, but dense hill fog had visibility down to about 50 feet on average, sometimes a bit less. In such conditions, a reliable GPS would be helpful.
I looked at the screen of my Colorado, and fine droplets were forming on the glass screen. When I left a summit and had to find the next path, I looked at the Colorado and it was off. I powered it up and it worked fine again for half an hour or so when it happened again. It happened a third time later on.
I thought it may be down to the dampness, so didn't report it, even though in my opinion, that shouldn't have affected it. Yesterday whilst doing the Snowdon horseshoe, in bright sunshine, and cloudless skies, it happened again, just the once, but that's once too many.
This is my second unit, the first went back because of a faulty wheel. Is there something I should try with this unit, or should I just get in touch with Garmin support. I have GB Discoverer mapping on it, but again, I don't see why that should be an issue.

You can get into the button test mode, by holding the center button of the roller in and powering it up. Hold both buttons down until you see a test screen. Press the button to the right of the rock-n-roller and you should see a graphic of the various buttons. Pressing each will highlight them showing their functionality.

Thanks for this. I tried it and it proved the rocker wasn't functioning properly. Garmin support asked me to send the unit back, which I did on Saturday. New (Newly Overhauled) unit arrived today and it works perfectly. At least the wheel etc does. If the accuracy etc is just the same as the old unit, which it should be unless it's a duff unit, then I'm sorted.

Got a problem with my Colorado's wheel so I sent Garmin an e-mail. I also attached a question about updates for the unit, as I have spent £115 on a GB Discoverer map for it. There were early problems on the Oregon and Colorado with this map series, but they have ironed these out with software updates on the Oregon, so I assumed they would also do that for the Colorado, but not so far. So my question was.
"Also I notice tonight there is yet
another update to the Oregon software just released (2.94), again the GB
Discoverer use is improved. Any chance of letting me know when/if an update
is forthcoming for the Colorado and if that will help get rid of the dual
road problems and poor display quality of the Discoverer series. Hate to
think I've wasted £115."
The reply was as follows

Pushing right on the rocker, should skip right by the N, 5, 3 etc, without the need to re-enter those digits. It would seem that your rocker is not functioning properly as you have mentioned.
Thanks for the quick response. Amazing really that I assumed it was a design fault common to all Colorado's, but in reality it was fault on my unit alone.

I had to have the wheel on my Colorado replaced after the magnet fell off so the roller didn't work. Garmin sent me a new one, everything fine, working just like it used to.
However, I have now bought myself a Garmin GB Discoverer map for the Snowdonia National Park (thinking that as Garmin released an update for the Oregon to sort out some problems with the Discoverer series, they'd do the same with the Colrado, but they haven't- but that's another story). Using this map, I find that when I try to pan right or up, it won't work, but it does go left and down. This I think is the rocking part of the wheel letting me down, whilst the roller is working fine.
Anyway here's the thing. When I want to edit a waypoint, for example, I want N53 18.940 but I have N53.18.903.
Firstly I edit the "N" I have to select the N using the roller then press the central button on the wheel to choose it, the same for the "5" and the "3". I always thought it would be better to just move to the right if the character I wanted was already there. Anyone see what I mean?
So is this the way it is for everyone, or is it just because of my wheel being useless? The problem is, it's been like that since I bought the unit so never suspected anything was wrong, and that everyone's is the same. It's just that since I've found I can't pan in all directions that it's made me think I have been an idiot.
I need to get in touch with Garmin support about the Right and Up issue, but need to know whether to mention the editing as well.

If you are going to decide on either the Oregon or Colorado because OS maps are now available on them, I wouldn't choose the Colorado at the moment. The quality of the OS maps on it are poor. A software update was released to sort out these issues on the Oregon, so I stupidly spent £115 on the Snowdonia National Park map thinking that the Colorado update would soon follow. Still waiting, yet the Oregon has had a further 2 updates since.

I have just watched the latest episode of Spooks, BBC3 17/11 (will be repeated on BBC1 next week). After about 48 minutes there is a PAF followed by a cache hunt in what I think is the tunnel under the Thames at Greenwich.
We watched that and Mrs Scoff turned to me and said "She's found a geocache"

Thanks for the replies and suggestions on this thread. I haven't heard of half the brands some are talking about here. I'll have to investigate a bit more. The socks I mentioned on my original post are in fact Sealskinz. They work a treat, a bit expensive, but they do all that's promised. If I bought enough pairs I (or someone who does such things) could make some trousers out of them.
I should also state here that I use ankle gaiters. My main reasons for using them are -
1. They stop my trousers from dragging on the floor as even the shortest leg fit is too long for a shorty like me.
2. As I am quite short, full size gaiters would be more like waders on me, but then again that could be the answer to my waterproof trousers dilemma.
I, or should that be Mrs Scoff, uses Nikwax Tech wash to wash my waterproof stuff, and the same brand waterproofing spray. My question to those of you who know much more than I is : Using those products, how much waterproofiness can I expect on your typical Berghaus coat that has goretex etc (don't ask specifics, I don't know them). Is it that you can only achieve a certain level of waterproofiness?
Thanks to Martlakes for the MWIS suggestion for weather forecasts, but they only do the Snowdonia range for weekends. Which is normally fine, but not for today. I have added it to my favourites for future use.
So I had finally decided to go up Snowdon. Finally got to a level of fitness that for me is superb, but for most is laughable, anyway, after 18 months or so of walking up mountains of increasing height, I thought I'd go for it, especially if the weather was ok!
So I got the BBC forecast, both the online and TV forecast agreed, cloudy, but dry. I searched the internet and found the Met Offices official Snowdonia page which suggested hill fog and wind higher up, light showers all over, and some sunny spells lower down. And in all fairness the Met Office was spot on. So I will use them from now on as they have a 100% record for accuracy. I'm sure they will never let me down.
The walk up the Pyg track was excellent. it rained twice, but nothing much to bother my waterproofs. Just as well.

So the BBC weatherman said it would be dry. Cloudy, and a bit blustery, but dry nonetheless. And like a fool, I believed him. I heard a story a month or two back that the BBC or the Met Office or someone like that had a fantastic new system so they could now give more accurate forecasts up to 3 days ahead! 3 days? Try getting 12 hours ahead right first, worry about 3 days some other time. Rain, rain, and just for good measure, a bit more rain.
Luckily for me, I thought, I had my waterproofs with me anyway. However my "waterproof" trousers turned out to be as waterproof as a sheet of A4 paper. Every so often you are supposed to treat them with some fancy washing stuff and so on, but my beloved doesn't wash them that often. Now don't call me sexist and say "Do it yourself then", ever since the infamous (in our house anyway) "Red Underpants" debacle of 1997
, she won't let me anywhere near the machine, so I have to rely on her. However, they were treated just a short while ago, and were sprayed with that waterproofing stuff (that smells absolutely rank, and if you breath in the fumes it strips the lining off your lungs),whilst on the washing line, again, this wasn't done by me, she won't let me near the washing line following the infamous "You put how many things on the line? No wonder it snapped" incident of 2002. But I'm sure a good job was done, and I value my life far too much to suggest that perhaps a better job could have been done, so lets not go there.At least my feet were dry. I recently spent £20 on a pair of sooperdooper socks that are guaranteed waterproof, and they worked a treat. Shame about the rest of me. That feeling when you bend over and your soaking and cold boxers touch part of your anatomy that hadn't previously felt wet or cold isn't particularly pleasant.
Still. I walked nearly 9 miles, got 3 great caches, and loved every minute of it. Just to think, I could have been sat behind my desk at work, warm and dry but in work. Instead I was having a whale of a time.
I'm back out on Wednesday, up some big mountains. Apparently, it's going to be a nice day.

So too good to be true!
Have just spoken with Garmin support who now tell me that there are 35 cards!
Each one comes with the vector map but 34 of them come with just one national park or just one national trail on at 1:25000!!!!
The last one comes with all the national parks on but only at 1:50000.
It makes memory map look a bit of a bargain.
I most definitely am not up to buying the same vector map 35 times!!
Has anyone actually bought any of the OS maps for the Garmin yet? I'd be interested to see what the take-up is like and how well it works.
I can't even find them on sale anywhere yet. No more news anywhere I don't think.

Have had a word with Garmin who suggest that there are three cards.
I think all have routing capabilities based on a vector map but also have some raster mapping.
Card one? - routing + all the national parks at 1:25000.
Card two ?- routing + all the National Trails at 1:25000.
Card three? - routing? + the whole country at 1:50,000.
I think the cost is about £130 per card.
The release date is the beginning of November.
These cards can only run on Colorados and Oregons unfortunately.
I am unsure just how well vector mapping will be handled by them?

I don't know much about how Memory Map etc works (not that techy to be honest), but I'm interested in having OS maps on my Colorado, but for MM it seems to be around £100 per National Park. £130 for the lot seems too good to be true. Or is this purely a map whilst MM offers all sorts of additional features that would make up that additional cost? I fear it will be £130 per region, but I am a bit of a pessimist! Please let me be wrong.

Got an Angel of the North coin in Blacks in Llandudno today. Don't know how many they have in, or what varieties, they were hiding them in the till under the money tray. They did want me to make a purchase before they gave me a coin, but I put them right on that. Not being tight or anything, but I've spent loads there in the past anyway, and will do again I'm sure.
At least they've got some at last.

My point was to let you all know that the geocoin forums operate under a different set of guidelines, while at the same time, forum posters must follow the general forum posting guidelines, and the terms of use of this site. It was not to discuss how this will be handled from here on out, or in the past.
Where people live, what country they are in, will not change those forum guidelines. They are there for all to abide by, regardless of race, creed, religion, sexual orientation, handicap, familial status, or national origin. Calendars are not geocoin related, and so they do not belong in the geocoin forums, period. I stand by my decision. I have posted what the next step is. It can be appealed, but the thread cannot be posted in a forum that was not built for calendar sales, or the sales of anything not trackable on geocaching.com. Even if it was a calendar geocoin, if it's not trackable, the thread is not allowed.
It's my job to keep the forums I moderate running in accordance with the guidelines. As I said, if The Hornet wants to appeal my decision, he may contact Groundspeak.
This isn't directed at you but is a general comment related to part of your response and I'm not wanting to open up old arguments here, but if different forums can apparently have diffrerent rules, why was there ever a problem on the UK forum about the whole charity promotion issue a few months back. We could have our own rules that only apply here, and could have avoided a whole load of upset.

There's a message on the UK forum from a Groundspeak Mod saying that the avatar changing / setting up isn't working at the moment. They will get round to fixing it soon, but have a few other things to do first.
