  1. The hit rate really just is that bad. I'm in Washington, so it might be different.

I've been a Where's George member for over 4 years now, and have entered 47 bills. I've gotten 4 bills with hits, and 3 of them took 3-4 months. One of them took 2 years. That was pretty cool!

The vast majority of bills I've entered are 1's, 5's and 10's, too. You'd think those would get circulated a lot. :P

  2. ... What do you think the back should look like?

Well I'm no NavDog but I'll give the rear of your coin a shot.

If I found that coin in a cache, I think I'd probably just leave it! :P

  3. Wow, for some reason I thought that the Port Townsend Implosion was an event! That would've been a great name for one.

Hope you're feeling better about life, bumblingbs. You've always seemed so nice to everyone here in the forums. I hate to see nice people go through a rough patch.

A fellow insomniac, eh? I'd offer to go caching with you at 2 a.m. sometime, but I have really bad night vision. B) Not a good combo, really.

    Be good to yourself. B)

  4. TotemLake said: I treat Snickers! like a member of the family. That is, he is disciplined for rude behavior the same way my child was disciplined.

The best-behaved dogs seem to come from an environment where they're treated that way. Definitely not fair to generalize all dogs and dog owners!

BTW, sorry you had such an allergic reaction to this discussion. Yikes! Could that be your Pavlov's bell now?  j/k

I hope not! I don't think there's an over-the-counter medicine to fix that!

Runhills said: Snickers for example is better behaved and less problem than most kids. If he is to be excluded as being a problem, then I wonder about the kids?

Exactly. Especially my son, who informed me this morning that my hair smells like chicken! (It doesn't, for the record!!!) If I can bring that crazy child out in public, then I daresay a well-behaved dog ought to be able to come, too. :)

  5. I'm not really a dog person myself (I love animals, but I'm allergic!), but TotemLake, your dog was really well-behaved the one time I saw him. He acted just like one of the people. I didn't mind him one bit!

I see the other side of the fence, though. There are dog owners whom I've visited in the past (NOT geocachers! :)) whose 80-100 pound dogs jump all over me and lick me. Great, for some reason typing that made me sneeze! Dogs and children can all be obnoxious unless they're trained to behave, though.

To make this more on-topic, most of the cachers I've met that have dogs do train them to behave and restrain them around other people, though, so although I'm not a big dog person, having an event with dogs allowed wouldn't scare me off one bit. Having an event with "no kids allowed" would probably be a dealbreaker for me! :)

  6. Yeah, who came up with the title for this thread, anyway? It was definitely a self-fulfilling prophecy!

Sorry we missed you Jester! I tried to call the payphone back that you'd called from, but some other guy answered and said you'd left. I decided not to invite him caching. Ah well, next time.

Boy, was it ever an eventful day! Lots of laughs, though. It was nice meeting you Robin and Patudles, and nice seeing you again Lucy! I had a blast! It was nice to have a little adventure. ;)

  7. I admit, I'm frightened of the thought of people leaving honest logs.

I keep thinking of cool ideas for caches, yet though I have been caching for a year and a half I have placed only one, and it wasn't really all that cool. When all you hear in the forums is "Geojunk! Geojunk everywhere! I hate micros! I hate city parks! I hate things that are too easy! I hate things that are too hard!" -- I guess what I'm asking is this: how does one get over the fear that geocachers they respect will publicly tar-and-feather them in the logs?

    I feel like I'm a pretty thick-skinned person, too, so I can't be alone.

I've placed only one cache, and within two weeks its name was brought up in a forum thread, and I'm trying very hard not to read too much into that. I'm honestly not trying to put anybody on the "spot," but it does make one wonder. I'm also wondering, however, if this might have some correlation with the slowed pace of caches placed in the south sound area...?

I like honesty, but maybe total honesty isn't always such a good thing?

Not trying to criticize anybody, just being randomly philosophical. I've like every cache I've hunted in its own way, even when it's one I can't find. B)

  8. 8 a.m.? Yikes!

I went to a "con" in Las Vegas last weekend, and there was DJing at the pool near our room until 6 a.m. every morning. I must not be as resilient as I used to be, because my sleep schedule is still completely turned around! It's a 57-mile drive from here, so I'll have to leave by 6:30 at the latest to get around the commuter traffic. That also means I'll have to be lucid enough to drive through commuter traffic! B):unsure:

So, if my daughter and I are late, just head on without us. We'll catch up! I'll have my FRS radio with me.

If I see anybody taking advantage of anybody, I just might turn around and go home! Hehe!

  9. Cool!

Will we be doing other caches before or after, or just Scout Lake? Either way, I'm game. I need an adventure. :o

Any start time or meeting place is alright with me!

  10. Poor Travis might be still trying to clear that first nearest caches page. I don't think that's the best way to geocache.

Kinda all depends on what you're looking for. I swear by clearing the nearest caches page! I know, that sounds silly, but I only moved to King County a couple of years ago and find it infinitely complex and fascinating. Fascinating enough to keep me busy exploring until I've explored it all up! Then, I'll go back and explore it again, because construction will have changed the whole thing. :o

Seriously, though, there's some parts of Federal Way I'd never have thought to explore otherwise. It's worked out pretty well. We've all got different goals. :o

  11. Hmmm... I thought I'd seen every episode of Gilligan's Island in existence, but somehow I missed that one. Either that or that segment of my brain was overwritten with something equally useful. :o

Yeah, I think I know the feeling though. Surely there's something else that those evenings would give you a great opportunity to do that you'd find more interesting, though!

I was lamenting over my injuries from my latest rollerblading accident, and a friend of mine suggested I take up hula hooping instead... she said that it looks really cool if you get the kind you can set on fire. You could try that! :o (I suspect she was mocking my clumsiness, but she insisted that people really do that.)

At least it'd be more exciting than looking for a film canister in the woods with 120 ft. accuracy!

  12. Hooray! Jester is an honorary woman! :o :o :o

    *ducks*

Mind if I join in? It sounds like fun, and I've got nothing going on this Friday. I'd probably be bringing Liagra, my 10-year-old, so I'll have to run it by her first. :P

  13. ...instead I'm almost -- dare I say it? -- dreading the feeling that I'm obligated to go caching on Thursday, Friday, and Monday night. I know I don't have to, but I really should. Kind of like I know I don't have to mow the lawn, but I should. It almost feels like a chore.

Yikes. That sounds like your problem, there. Who do you feel this obligation to, local cache owners? Your stats? The caching community at large?

Fortunately, I have more hobbies and interests than I can count on my fingers and toes, and I take up new hobbies or interests at whim whenever they come to mind. Ask RomulusNR. I probably drive him nuts, but I never really get bored with anything that way. I suppose that's why my cache count isn't higher, but it's also why I'm never burned out. :o

Maybe putting geocaching on the backburner for a while and only finding a cache when you feel like it would be a good idea. Sure, you've got caches to maintain, but considering how well-hidden yours are, I doubt they get plundered as often as some.

It's a hobby, not a job or an obligation. It should be fun! If you don't enjoy it, then it's not really much of a hobby anymore. I'm not suggesting you quit caching altogether -- a lot of people would be sad if you did, and not just because you put together awesome PDF files for the cache machines :o -- but if you're tired of it, nobody will resent you for sitting things out until caching is fun again.

Or... you could throw together an event cache page for those nights and call it "Travis is obligated to go caching and everybody in the area is obligated to join in!" :o
