Over the last two weeks I have been developing an application for the pocket PC (also know as Windows Mobile) that allows me to quickly log caches while on the road.
It has been created to use the Field Notes section on geocaching.com, the Garmin Colorado series of GPS can generate a field notes file as well, but I was not interested in buying one at this time. But I still wanted to use the quick upload method afforded the Colorado users to log their cache finds, DNF's etc.
So knowing I was going on a 7 1/2 day caching road trip I created the field notes program for my Pocket PC based phone/pda
We used it to log over 285 caches over 4200 miles, it cut our logging time from hours a night to minutes.
Since our return I have added a number of features. Default "Found" and "DNF" Logs are now user options so you can click on found or Not found and default text is inserted for you.
The ability to track how many total find you have, plus tracking of Finds, DNF's and Needs Maintenance Notes is tracked for the current Field Notes File, has been added to this version.
I have also added the ability to add a custom signature to each log this can be static or utilize some of the dynamic information the software tracks, like the find # in this log, what find this is for you, the time of the find, etc The example Signature below adds the following to my logs:
Find #5 of the day!
Time of the find: 15:35
Find #2110
At the end of the day you plug your PDA into the computer copy the geocache_visits.txt file to your PC/mac and upload it to geocaching.com using the fields Notes section.
From there you can quickly and easily log your finds for the day/trip/etc.
As the time and date are recored in the geocache_visits.txt file you can easily track caches over the course of a trip and still get them logged on the correct day.

We are headed into Houston to end our 3500 mile trek across the Southern US, and want to release a TB in honor of the states we visited. However we are finding difficult to find where to purchase a TB Dog tag in the Houston Area, If someone knows where and can email me today that would be great.

VERY FRUSTRATING!
My phone just beeped with a text message of two new caches...BUT I CAN'T GET IN!!!!!!
How can we FTF hounds get to find anything when the site is always down.

Not True the Secret Agent made his way to Calgary in the last couple of days...
Now the question is with all the snow up here did he leave any foot prints. I am headed out to the cache now to see.
The caches that the GCSA visited are in a fairly remote wooded location, so I set off this afternoon to see if I could get lucky and find me a coin. When I got to the cache there where foot prints all over the place, it appeared that someone else had beaten me to the cache.
After checking his log it appeared that he was unable to find a coin, so knowing that there where two caches in the area with Similar names I continued down the trail checking each of the caches along the way.
When alas I was rewarded with the following:
The question was would the GCSA leave footprints in all the snow... None that I could detect. Thanks GCSA.

"Discovered" means you're a numbers whore.
I have found a number of TB's in caches that they are not logged into, as I find it strange to grab every TB I come across, as I am averaging 100+ caches every 25 days, I will Discover them so that the ower at least knows where they have ended up as some new people have been nice enough t grab them and move them along they just have not logged it here.
If I grab them, the of course just get logged.

I'm going to Aruba on Thursday and just thought about bringing a couple of travel bugs with me. Do I need an official one from Groundspeak store? I'll never get a tag in time....do you think if I purchase a couple, they'll email me the number that I can attach to the bug so I'll have it in time for my trip in three days? Has anyone done this before? Thanks in advance.
Where do you live, there are many local stores that sell them. All of my Travel bugs I have picked up at a local GPS store.

Has been in my town Since April and is still going strong. Like any cache it's lifespan can be shortened by where and how well it is hidden.

Good luck. and don't give up, I like you got my GPSr home, download a couple of caches and was off, I too did not find any of them (for that matter one of the two I still have not found and have been back many times). But determined I set off the next day, and found a couple. and have not had a day since that I have not had at least one find.
What I find the most helpful is knowing what size of container I am looking for, so that I can narrow the possibilities down to places that the container could fit. Micro's like a Bison Tube or smaller should be avoided until you have a couple of finds under your belt, as they are so small they can almost hide in/on/under anything.
Multi's can be good to get the practice of entering co-ords in the field, but play with the GPS or have the manual with you as many will have things like projected waypoints etc, that is not covered int he quick start guide.
Once you get a couple of finds under your belt you can start to see where they are most likely hidden, one other tell tail sign if the cache has been there for a bit is all the broken branches or new path leading to it.

I'm from a different era, before computers, so I sometimes don't even know what some of the puzzles are asking-so it is hard to ask a question. Crossword and sudoku I understand-but not secret codes. It seems like these computer problems with puzzles are becoming more common. What ever happened to using a gps and finding a cache. Am I alone on this?
I agree 100% one of the thing that annoys me more than just a straight puzzle cache is one that I have to run around to 4 or say 6 caches to get codes that mean nothing, then try and make sense of them... With no hint about what to do with them.
