The problem is not with GpxSonar but with the data that you've entered in GSAK for cache BALT08.
Line 608, position 31 in the file that you sent me:
<Groundspeak:owner id=">GLM</gr">GLM</Groundspeak:owner>
Basically, what you've entered : '>GLM</gr' is corrupting the XML structure because GSAK is not validating the input, stripping whatever invalid crap is provided by the user.
You need to take this to ClydeE.

Ok, I've checked out your file using v1.2. The only cache that contains funky characters is : GCJ30Z. None of the others that you pointed out in your email to me had them.
The garbage characters in the Gpx file for that cache are:
5{l
GpxSonar removes the characters from those sequences and leaves the rest which is why you see 'weird' x0; characters. But at least you can load the file.
Such things should -never- be present in XML files in the first place. I make an effort to eliminate the truely illegal garbage but only partially. I'll see what I can do in the future to totally remove such things.
All I can say is that crap in GPX files happens... Pocket Queries or even Cache Pages are not perfect. Fortunately it's not too frequent.
All in all, I don't think you should sweat this too much.

Should I delete the PQs from the PDA and then resync them in? Would that make a difference?Nope, that would not make any difference. GpxSonar regenerates the cache pages on demand according to the content of the GPX file.
Can you zip up that GPX file and email it to me at fabien_royer at hotmail.com? In your email, please add some context so that I can know what I'm looking at

Are you able to open the original GPX files in GpxSonar before importing them into GSAK? Were they working properly in GSAK?
What did Clyde say about this problem?

Universal Alphabet UTF-8. Is that the same thing?For all intents, yes. I think you must not have regenerated the cache pages afterwards though...
Switch to UTF-8 (whatever flavor is available) in PIE then close it and regenerate the same cache page. Everything should be ok then.
Internally, all cache pages generated by GpxSonar are UTF-8 encoded just like the GPX data is.
I even specify <META HTTP-EQUIV="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> in the cache pages but I think that PIE ignores meta tags.
Let me know how that goes.

It would seem that way, however, GPXSonar has oddball characters that appear in the cache page sometimesThat's not an issue with GpxSonar but with Pocket IE. In order to fix it, try this in PIE:
Tools \ Options \ Advanced -> Unicode UTF-8
You should never see funky characters after that.

I downloaded and installed GPXSonar and the very same pocket queries that won't open in GPXView open just fine in GPXSonar.
I think that you've solved your problem right there.

Can you tell me where the field notes are stored? I'd like to work out why field notes not working fo me.I've looked at your configuration and your GPX file. There's nothing wrong anywhere other than the fact that you've removed some columns that probably should not be removed in order to see field notes: Open 'List \ Preferences' and check the 'TB', 'Note' and 'Found' columns and click OK (You may want to squeeze the 'Found' column back to a smaller size since you had it so wide). Then for any of the caches listed there, you can add a field note. 'X' out of the dialog and you will see the note icon appear.

Can you zip up this file along with the GPX file that you're using so that I can take a look? What version were you running before you upgraded to 1.2? Any details would help.

GeoToad has a little bug: it appends the word "Cache" to the cache type <...>Of course, this is GeoToad's problem (maybe it will be fixed some time) but still, GPXSonar could be more flexible, e.g. just search for the "Traditional", "Multi", etc. substrings instead of using the full descriptions.I'm not interested in degrading the load time of well-formed GPX files trying to compensate for the bugs in someone else's software. GSAK can afford to waste some cycles on this being a desktop app but for a PocketPC app, I don't think it's the right thing to do.
Considering that GeoToad is open-source, you could volunteer some of your time and fix these quirks that you've noticed you know...
Also, I have a few gpx files with very long names and in the file opening dialog, I cannot see the full names, they get truncated, which makes the selection a bit difficult.You can't be serious!?!
How about renaming your files to something shorter?

1. The ability to select between a single-click or a double-click to bring up the cache page details.
2. The ability to enable or disable the auto-loading of the last GPX file.
These options can be found under the 'File \ App Config' menu.

It means that whatever graphics are present in the HTML also need to be moved to where the HTML file is written. I can already tell that this would be an endless source of problems. As a result, I'm going to leave this one alone.

One other thing I've noticed is if you open up list, preferences, and do nothing, it still redraws the screen which resizes all your columns, etc.You need to 'X' out of the dialog instead of clicking OK if you don't change anything.
plus it takes a good 10 seconds.I can't help you there dude. This is an issue with your PDA. On mine, redraws are instant.

Really wanted the S+T pushpin feature, so installed the new version. Can't seem to get it to work, just like I couldn't get the same feature to work in GPXView.I'm done all of my testing with Pocket S+T 2004 and things work flawlessly. I've never tested with S+T 2002 though, so I really don't know what could be wrong. You may want to ask advice from Renegade Knight or GeoFool on that one.

One thing That is missing for me is a link to the nearest caches from a cache pageTo find the nearest caches from a cache where you are: do a 'tap & hold' on the cache entry in the cache list, select 'Cache Options', select 'Set As Center'. This will cause the cache list to re-organize itself with the current one at the top of the list and the nearest ones below sorted by increasing distance.
Check the following link to the online doc on that subject: Set As Center
and derned if I can find a search feature.It's there too and you'll get to it this way.

It would be cool if you could have multiple notes against a cache, so you could log a DNF and maybe a Found later, but that may well come with time.That's unlikely to come with time when you can easily do that already by editing the cache note as you go.
A few niggles aside, and a potential showstopper that I'm prepared to live withDo you care to elaborate on those niggles & the potential showstopper?
Don't you think you should try to understand the software better and find at least one cache with it before criticizing?

I've got a Gecko 201 as my backup GPS (my main one being a MeriPlat) and I like it. It's fine for finding caches (as opposed to hiding them because the 201 does not average coordinates) and it makes for a nice on-board computer on my mountain bike
I wish it had an electronic compass (like the 301) though. Finally, the Gecko may be water resistant but they don't float
My 2 cents.

I forgot to mention that I use the SD card in my MeriPlat everytime I go caching to transfer waypoint sets from GpxSonar. In other words, I use the PDA as my SD card reader-writer. It's extremely handy in the field

On my MeriPlat, I've reduced the available displays down to 3 screens:
1. The satellite view.
2. The map view (customized to show me the bearing and the distance fields)
3. The Large coordinates screen w/ the odometer (customized to show me the EPE and the distance).
That's it. That allows me to switch between the screens quickly using 'ESC' and 'NAV' without wasting time going through the other non-essential screens (at least when caching).
The satellite view tells me about the precision (2d / 3d) and the sats in views, the map view lets me drive to and approach the cache area. Finally to locate the cache, I always use the distance and the bearing given by the GPS. I don't use the compass of the GPS, instead I use my own lensatic compass to get highly accurate bearings.
As I approach the cache area (100 feet or so), I tend to slow down my pace to let the GPS 'catch up' in order to give me an accurate position. It's easy to overshoot the cache otherwise.
Once in the close area of the cache, I look for likely hidding spots. The trick here is to stop looking at the GPS screens and paying attention to the environment
It sounds silly but when I first started caching, I recall having the tendency to trust the GPS too much and my eyes not enough.If I can't find the cache, I usually triangulate its position (using bearing and distance from 3 different angles) or I go by its coordinates.
