  1. I'm in the process of scouting out the area where I live for new cache locations, I one of the possible candidates is this one: Eighteen Mile Creek Here's the description for it: Description Eighteen Mile Creek is 464.0 acre town owned developed park in the Town of Hamburg in Erie County. Some sources cite that this is a popular site for fishing and fossil hunting. According to Erie County Public Use policy, recreational use of this park is currently prohibited. A study is currently underway to develop a passive use policy for this park. In light of the description, should I even think about placing a cache there? Thanks, Fabien. 2. I recently hid this cache but it was archived almost immediately (long story) I relocated the cache and now, I want it un-archived (I sent a couple emails to GeoStaff). Am I asking for something that's not possible? Is the "archived" state permanent? Any insight would be appreciated. Regards, Fabien. A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  3. Fits your budget and specs and then some. I got one after doing much research and comparing just about every Garmin and Magellan units. I am very pleased with it. Just my 2 cents. A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  4. I don't know about any of you guys, but when I get to a cache, I trade as fairly as I can. So, I have at all times 3 grades of items to trade as fairly as possible. Honestly, I believe that one has to have "code of honor" to be a respectable player in this sport: if you don't have what you need to trade fairly, have the decency to just leave a log in the book. No one will blame you for it. Just my 2 cents. A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  5. My ex-company had nothing to do with Enron, but it still went down Been looking for 7 months now. Sucks being in IT these days... A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  6. I am new to the sport, and now that I have a few caches under my belt, I have acquired a taste for the harder ones and tend to stay away from the easier ones. I will get to them eventually once I run out of the more interesting ones. Overall I feel that the easy caches are what keeps GeoCaching a "game" while the harder ones introduce another level of challenge and make GeoCaching a "sport". Just my 2 cents. 7. Furthurnet.org has some some real jewels. A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  8. May as well provide a link to a Grateful Dead cache A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  9. Grateful Dead Live Recordings ARE legal to share. My 2 cents. Fabien. A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  10. Jokes Regards, Fabien. A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  11. The cache which originated that everlasting thread is called Wired! and belongs to me I do have a bunch of music and movies in there, but they're all taken from the public domain. If you dig a bit on the net, you'll find a wealth of such media freely available. It takes a little work to compile it but it kinda makes the charm and the value of the cache in my mind. Regards, Fabien. A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  12. For easy caches, I recommend these: Otherwise, I use Black Rock boots, 100% waterproof and insulated. I really like wearing them especially after adding Dr Scholl soles in them. Cheers, Fabien. A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  13. I thought about the following question: quote:But if we did, in a hypothetical situation, how might one hide a dangerous and illegal cache in a national forest, where such caches have been previously pulled. How do you do it? And I came up with this answer: steganography. Take a look at the "recent news" section of my profile for an example. All you have to do when you register your cache is to "mark" it (using a special character somewhere in the description or in the encrypted text or using a watermark in a picture...) so that people in the know would recognize it as a "special" cache with hidden location information. Of course, the coordinates that you would post for the cache would have to be in a "legal" area but pointing to a most "virtual" cache ;-) There are other ways to hide information. This is only one of them. Cheers, Fabien. A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  14. I figured that I'd keep things interesting after all the hoopla about this cache...So today, I upgraded it to a 3/3 from its initial 1/1 level ;-) And of course, it's even more Dangerous and Illegal than before A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  15. I am thinking about my next cache, and while tossing a few ideas around, one stuck more than the rest. I have in mind to create a network of caches owned by different people in different locations but forming an "alliance" of some sort where each cache contains one or more fragments of the coordinates to a final cache. In other words, this is a network of "cooperating" caches which would have to be visited to finally get to the ultimate one but beyond the realm of a "regular" multi-cache usually owned by one person. I was thinking that a new kind of "HyperBugs" could be created for the purpose of keeping the coordinates. Something that could not be mistaken for a regular cache item. Those bugs would not move of course (then again maybe they could ;-). On the web site, such Hyper-Caches would be listed w/o coordinates, but would reference the list of the cooperating caches. Cache "alliances" could span counties, states, countries and continents of course. Some could be done in a day, some could take a lifetime to complete. Or cachers in different locations could also perform some cooperative caching "missions" in order to retrieve coordinates faster. What do you think? A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  16. I'm curious to hear about durability experiences with those, not so much about the tech part. Thanks though. Fabien. A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  17. My next cache will be named "Dangerous & Illegal" .. That should rattle some cages, what do you think? A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  18. I was thinking that even with a Rhino skin or a ruggedized enclosure, taking a Pocket PC or a Palm through the woods, mud, water and other harsh environment like extreme temperatures would be risky business. Not to mention the falls... How are the PDAs + GPS card holding up? Are the ruggedized enclosures really good? Just curious to hear some feedback from the real world. Regards, Fabien. 19. I think that the weather totally changes the rating of a cache in some instances. As a matter of fact, I believe that there should almost be a rating for each season for the more chanllenging ones especially. A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  20. France used to have a mandatory 1 year term for all men between 18 and 35. So, after I graduated from college, I did my time like everyone else. I have to say that I enjoyed my time there. I regarded my 3 months of basic training as a mix between a surreal summer camp and a life-size wargame ;-) After that, I was working directly under the command of a general in a ministry. I spent my time writing database management software. Not exactly an action packed assignment, but it was a worthwhile experience in many ways, which got me a secret level clearance. Cheers, Fabien.
  21. Geez people! The content of the cache is PERFECTLY safe, legal, rated PG, w/o sharp edges, none of the parts can be swallowed, does not contain lead paint, has been tested for radon, molds and is far enough from the highway in a wooded area. About the digital media: It's all public domain stuff snagged from the net: 'Gutemberg Project' e-books, Usenet recipes, public domain old delta blues, public domain movies For reference: http://pressthebutton.com/archives/ http://www.mp34u.com http://promo.net/pg/ Do I need to provide a urine sample and a blood test to be a geocacher too?
  22. I was also thinking about calendars with a geo-caching theme, something along the lines of the Far Side (whacky geo-humor), or even Hansel Adams (awesome landscapes featuring caches) with coordinates on the flip-side... Just a thought. Fabien.
  23. I understand and respect the need for a self-policing community. I just don't care for the way things were handled in this case. I would have appreciated a direct email expressing the concerns about the cache. Try to see things from my point of view for a second: I had to 'stumble' on this thread as I am discovering the forums to realize that there was a potential issue. Sucks, doesn't it? Next time a newcomer makes a mistake in a cache description, point it out to the reviewer of the submission and let him handle it. ... 1000111-1000101-1001111 is indeed 'GEO' in ASCII. SimonG : 1 Mopar : 0 ;-P I made yet another change to the page, this time encrypting the 'driving' / 'parking' directions. Cheers, Fabien.
