  1. Friday night, Dekaner, Brogan and I got together for a little night caching in the snow! It was a blast! Between the bushwacking on the Wired! cache (hue, am I forgiven yet?), me locking my keys in the trunk of my car and Dekaner popping out of his snowshoes on a regular basis, it was one of the best time caching I've ever had! Thanks guys for the fun and I can't wait to do it again! A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  2. Try this cache. The container is smaller than a 35mm film canister (it's a recycled bicycle patching kit) with a magnet epoxyed to the outside. It contains a log book made out of 10 sheets of paper the size of a thumb nail placed in a jewelry-type mini-ziplock bag. There's even room to spare for a couple micro trade items A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  3. To leave in an area with so many cache clusters! I find myself drooling over the cache maps in your areas...We need more cachers and caches in Buffalo, please send some from NJ for Xmas A cache a day keeps the blues away...

  5. I've been caching for over a month now and I've found the forums to be an invaluable source of pertinent information. Turns out that most of the best posts that I've read have been written by the very people who responded to this thread so far (before me that is)...and a few others who have not yet (but I won't name names ). Overall, I don't think it's possible or fair to single out one specific 'influencial' person on the forums. Many contributors from various backgrounds have provided me with insightful and helpful perspectives. Of course, there are some 'staple' posters around here and maybe they are the most 'popular' in that sense, not necessarily the most 'influencial'. A cache a day keeps the blues away...

  9. Take a look at this: http://www.netstumbler.com/nation.php NetStumbling is the cracker's version of GeoCaching: it requires a GPS, a laptop...and a Wi-Fi card. Your network *is* the cache A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  10. Something that could be clipped to a backpack shoulderstrap w/o sliding, slipping, flopping around, etc. The ideal case would also have a vinyl window to show the display of the GPS as well as an opening to provide access to the control buttons. I realize that a few different models would be required (I'm personally looking for something for the Magellan Meridian). Just a thought. A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  11. I'm new to the sport and I'd like to find a few experienced cachers who would be interested in getting together on a regular basis to cache on weekends. I'd be particularly interested to try night caching as well as caches that require snowshoeing. Regards, Fabien. A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  12. I still check these on a regular basis though... http://www.infoanarchy.org/ http://packetstormsecurity.com/ A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  13. And I am in the process of hiding 2 more. I'm also scouting out many parks in the area in search of potential cache sites. I actually enjoy the cold weather (no bugs or nasty plants), and I don't mind the snow too much as long as it's not too deep. A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  14. quote: 'Scott Johnson' wrote: Self Defense? My first thought was "why are you caching in a place where you are worried about your safety?". 2 things: 1) $#%t has happened to me before in places that were supposedly 'safe'. 2) Make no assumptions about the safety of *any* public area. As I already mentioned, the crime rate of a given area is usually not posted for everyone to see as I recently found out quote:My second thought was -- well, I won't share that one with you. Have the courage of your opinions...send me an email quote:Try getting a dog. They not only protect you from whatever... but they also help you to meet new "friendly" people. Darn...Too bad I'm a cat person! I hope that does not make me 'unfriendly' The fact is that a dog can be incapacitated instantly with pepper spray...I'd rather be self-sufficient. 17. All your answers have been very helpful and have made me reconsider the use of the flare gun for self-defense (mostly because of the risk of forest fire and/or self-immolation ). Captain Leno guessed correctly regarding the type of the flare gun: its a standard Orion 12 Ga sold over the counter at Wal-Mart for $25. The fact is that in NY, a flare gun is classified as a non-gun and is easy to buy (I don't know about carrying it around though). So much easier to purchase than pepper spray for instance! I tried that route only to be told that I would need to be in law enforcement to get such a spray It just does not make sense to me. The other problem is that getting a hand gun in NY state is a real expensive hassle too. That's why I had settled on the flare gun option. Not for the lack of training in handling firearms (I was in the military for a year in Europe). For the most part, the places where I go caching are safe. However, I cache alone and I recently found out that a number of muggings and rapes have occured in an area (a nature preserve) that I would have never suspected to be dangerous I truely believe that making assumptions about the "safety" of any given remote area is a mistake, particularly when going alone and I want to be prepared in case of a nasty encounter. So maybe a staff is an option, but I'd rather be able to put a bit more distance between me an a potential attacker, be it man or beast A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  18. I own a flare gun and I carry it loaded with me when I go caching. I was wondering if such a gun could also be used against an attacker (mostly human) or would something like pepper spray be more effective? A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  19. quote: sbell111 Half of the posts on this thread have now been rendered meaningless. Whenever I feel blue, I start breathing again. The feedback that I got from the few who responded to my question was enough to motivate me (special thanks to Dekaner of Team KKF2A) to go ahead and ask for the permission to place a cache at 'Eighteen Mile Creek'. It appears that this park is in a 'grey area' where some activities are tolerated even though this undevelopped park is not officially open to the public. And I believe that GeoCaching can be one of these activities. Hopefully, we'll prevail there A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  20. Look for the [Click to temporarily disable] link on the cache page to disble the cache until you restore it or if you decide to get rid of the cache entirely, check the "Archive This Cache" link in the upper-right corner of the cache page. 21. I just had too many beers...celebrating my charter membership tonight I meant: I am surprised that Jeremy closed the thread so abruptly... And what The Toe and yourself said is right on the money. Pfff...Gotta get another cold one... A cache a day keeps the blues away...
  22. I never had to complain about anything so far (except about some people deeming some caches "illegal and dangerous" w/o ever visiting them) but I have to say that I'm kinda surprised by the "iron fist" attitude on this one...I guess that everyone is entitled to having a bad day every once in a while. 24. While I like regular caches for the instant gratification that they procure, I enjoy a multi-cache even more for the challenge that they present. My first cache was initially a regular one but became a multi quickly because it was just too easy. The next cache that I'm planning will also be a multi because I want the cacher to enjoy a nice hike over a couple miles filled with wildlife before getting to the goodie box. However, I don't think that a multi with more than 4 legs is a good idea, unless there's a *really* good reason for it. My $0.02... Fabien. A cache a day keeps the blues away...
