If there are a lot of railroad tracks in your area, you're bound to find some that aren't in use anymore. They are usually marked as such on topo maps.

I'm happy with mine: it's light, comfortable, easy to clean and the plastic taste does disappear quickly.
But the one thing that bugs me is the lack of insulation on the hose, causing it to freeze when the weather is cold enough
I guess I could just place vodka in there to remedy that

with ammo cans! I have a few caches out there most of which use 'Seal and Save' or 'Tupperware' types of containers. But after seeing for myself how ammo cans hold up against moisture compared to the plastic stuff, it's a no brainer and I'm converted to ammo cans. Not to mention that ammo cans are a lot cheaper too!
My 2 cents.

I have an idea for a multi-cache where one of the legs requires the cacher to have a laptop or a PDA equiped with a wireless card in order to get one or more set of coordinates from a web server.
The cache description would specify the network settings required for the Wi-Fi card to connect to the wireless network and the web server.
However, it would be up to the cacher to find the area within which the Wi-Fi signal can be received

I have to agree that personal trade items are the cream of the crop, especially when they are books
I recently found "Travels with Charley" by Steinbeck in a local cache. I loved the book so much that I emailed the cache owner to thank him for it. Turns out that it's the signature item of 'Team Grambohler', a friend of the cache owner.
To me, such trade items say a great deal about the person who placed them and add yet another dimension to our community.

Having snow on the ground is quite fun: you get to strap on snowshoes to go caching and the landscapes are just awesome! And for the most part, there's no nasty plants or bugs to boot

I agree that caching is not about #s (although from reading some forums, it seems that one's a nobody until one reaches the 100 mark ;-) but when you don't have a high find count (yet), every one counts

I've met Brogan and Dekaner on the trails as we went caching together.
And I've just about converted my brother in law to geocaching too. Was not too difficult since he's a tech junkie like me.

My first avatar was a simple pic of my GPS until I could find something better. Then I stumbled on my current avatar while searching through the Deviant Art site. When I saw it, it reminded me of a couple places where I had been skiing and caching.

Made with Photoshop and printed on Avery labels. I usually place them in the logbook along with my log entry.

I'm afraid that these discs will not survive extreme temperatures too well. Heat will likely melt them, and the cold will likely crack them.

When it makes more sense to use the hand warmer on the GPS instead of your hands
When snowshoes are required to get to 1/1 caches in any given patch of woods.
When you have to take a leak on the cache to loosen it from the grip of the ice

Brogan and I went caching last night in Wyoming County. We had a great time in snowshoes and headlamps. But the cold weather made it quite a challenge to read the screen of the GPS, adding to the fun of the hunt. Next time, I'll have hand warmers for the GPS

I'm still in Paris until the 22nd and I'm going to miss this event! This is a real bummer
On the positive side of things, I'll be hiding one of the few real caches near Paris (maintained by family members on my behalf) :-)

I discovered GeoCaching as I was looking for a GPSr. I had just moved to the Buffalo area from Philly and had sworn to myself to never get lost again in a city that didn't know. In my quest for a GPSr, the word 'GeoCaching' kept popping up and I had to find out for myself... The rest is history!
I enjoy caching for the thrill of being outdoors (especially during the winter time) and caches with difficult terrain ratings for the workout that they provide.
I also enjoy hiding caches as much as I like to find them. I find the planning stage of a cache quite interesting and creative.
My only wish would be to find a partner in life with the same interests, as my soon-to-be-ex-wife is in a world of her own.
