  1. Get the explorist 500. Works very nicely, good driving software avaliable, expandable, rugged, waterproof to 1 meter, VERY accurate, color, and connectable. Buy it.
  2. Download a third-party garmin driver for mac. Also, what OS do you have? 10.2 or below has a usb interface that works crappily with new stuff. Also, in import, make sure you have Geocaching.com .loc selected.
  3. Cobra is like an apple computer 10 years ago (no one cared about it because there was no third-party software for it.) I would advise against buying it.
  4. Firmware is the most basic software that the unit runs on (it tells the unit how to proccess data). Try buying an external antennae. I do not know witch to buy though.
  5. easygps is for serial gps units. The explorist 600 is usb. download GSAK or gpsbabel (gsak is better.) I have an explorist 600 and made the same mistake you did.
  6. There are 2 menus import and export. Make sure the .loc file is selected in import, and that garmin/usb port is selected in export. plug in the unit, turn it on, and put in transfer mode.
  7. YYAAAHHH!!!! Found it! download here: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/gpsbabe...mirror=easynews. Drag ALL files that have downloaded to a folder that you make in your applications folder.
  8. If you have an e-compass, it tells you where the cache is relative to your position. As soon as you het near the cache, the gpsr cannot tell exactly where you are relative to the cache, so the e-compass spins to where the gps thinks the cache is relative to you. Hard to explain, but I hope you understand.
  9. Just enter the coords to the second part and label it a s a multi cache- call it [cache name] par two or something.
  10. If you miss aturn that directroute tells you to do, you have to push GOTO twice to recalculate. If not, It autoupdates. Go for the directroute.
  11. The only mirror is in the UK... I am in the U.S. Am I supposed to expirience major lag? I stopped waiting for it to start downloading after about the first minute.
  12. 3D has every POI that directroute has plus camping grounds, trails, etc.
  13. It never clearly stated witch file to download for a mac. There were four files with different extensions.
  14. Just do the explorist. Explorist software looks old-school but it has very advanced hardware. Garmin is eye candy, but I like the way the explorist functions and operates. for your requests: 1.You can hook it up to the computer and easily download waypoints. 2.If you have mapsend directroute, yes. 3.like you said. 4.Of course. 5.Yes.
  15. When I download and drag to my apps folder and try to open it, it says "cannot open app because app cannot be found. would you like to find it?" I select the program from the downloaded file. It opens, then a message appears immediately saying "this is not a valid program" AAARRGGGHHHH!!!!!
  16. Yes, mapsend topo has absolutely everything that directroute has. The only difference is that you cannot do a street route.
  17. I believe that you can view your position on a laptop. Can anyone give an explanation on how to do this with magellan explorist and garmin units? I do not know myself.
  18. On mapsend topo 3d V1.0 you can change the serial number. On 1.5 or higher you do not need the disk to be in the drive butyou cannot change the serial #.
  19. Actually, tha baromiter feature can be useful if you don't have a weather radio or are out of NOAA broadcast range. Here is a weather prediction chart. Over 30 ingh= good weather (unless you are already in fog) around 29 ingh= cloudy under 28 ingh= get your rain jacket under 20 ingh= may be snowing under 10 ingh= uh oh under 3 ingh= you are probably on mount everest in a low pressure time or in a leaky plane
  20. Odd, my explorist got me closer than my friend's 60CSx he was using . Doesn't hat seem wierd that despite a usual 6 foot or less accuracy on a good day maggies can't zoom closer than garmins? Maybe magellan will change this in the next firmware update. Oh, 2 questions. 1. What does it mean when you zoom to 100 ft? (100 sq. ft.? 10,000 sq. ft.?) 2.Does anyone know when magellan will update the 500's firmware?!
