  1. Not exactly sure what you're saying, but one of these two answers your question. 1.Mapsend topo 3D has over 30,000 trails, camping, etc. POIs, but they only show a point, not an actual trail. 2.If you want an actual trail, you could probably download one as a track file and copy it to your gpsr.
  2. If anyone dissagrees that google earth is prefect for this, they are crazy. Download from googleearth.com.
  3. A magnet can also interrupt signals going through a microproccessor. A current generates it's own magnetic field. If you hold a magnet to a 9 volt current, nothing will happen. But since the current of each little microscopic silicon wire in the microproccessor of your gpsr is like 1/1000,000,000th of a volt (just guessing, I don't know exactly), the magnet can interrupt the signal. Also, since an SD card works by storing charges in metal capacitors, can't you mess those up with a magnetic field strong enough to shift them?
  4. Magnets can corrupt digital data.
  5. I think the magellan is the best. My cousin got a 2500T and I love it. TONS of POIs, voice prompting, cool look overall. Get this.
  6. I believe the rino only broadcasts at 1.5 watts. I am not sure if FRS is legal or used in canada.
  7. Directroute is the best for driving. It is the only magellan software that can do a street route.
  8. Better start believing for anyone who has a garmin.
  9. I forgot to mension that T.V. and internet would also be nice.
  10. Testing the satellite lock won't do anything other than tell you how sensitive the antennae is. What really matters is the signal proccessing software. Magellan uses truefix and I don't know what garmin uses. Maybe span's comment on accuracy is correct just because truefix might proccess position better than garmin software (something someone should check). I have not gathered alot of data but for now I hve to agree with him. I have barely had a chance to go caching, but so far I have to agree with what he said about getting right next to the cache.
  11. I was told a man drove into a river and almost drowned because his nav systen told him to. The moral is: don't drive into a river even if your gps tells you to. I do not know what gps he was using.
  12. The magellan units are wonderful, but if there is a problem and you are out of your waranty, you are screwed. Magellan customer service sucks! The customer service is about a useful as a quick-start manual. If you want a great unit like explorist, do not order it from the magellan website. You will probably get extended warranty that way.
  13. I feel that I need an e-compass, WAAS compatability, expandable memory, 7-foot accuraccy, computer syncabiltiy, and a sensory array (baromiter, barometric altimiter, thermomiter) and color are nice. A great gps would be one with all those plus voice prompting and pda capability.
  14. Maybe he just doesnt like the diminutive fella in yer avatar.... Hehehe...
  15. What scotman said is true but gpsbabel+ and loadmytracks are great.
  16. You could use Nroute from Garmin for free - probably not show much, or use Delorme products. Might set your GPS to demo to get it to do something. Does Nroute work with explorist?
  17. You don't need a electronic compass, it needs calibration and uses more battery power. The units without the electronic compass still have a compass screen though it uses gps signal to figure out what direction your heading. Units without the E-compasss you'll need to be moving 2MPH for it to work, I can't remember a cache I ever did that didn't require me to be moving to get there. save your money and buy a real compass. What use is a real compass if you don't know what direction the cache is? Also, I find the compass great for triangulation.
  18. I agree completely. My 400 was great until a nearby magnet corrupted some data. It was probably fixable, and I urgently needed the unit fixed to do surveying but the lady in customer support was absolutely clueless and didn't help at all. I ended up returning it to costco and getting the 600.
  19. Um, actually, it is. I don't want to cause outrage in garmin users, but although garmins are very sweet, explorists have often given me more accurate results. 1. Using a government marker, the explorist said the position exactly correct while the 60CSx was about 12 feet off. 2.The explorist always gets me right on top of a cache while the 60CSx was about 10 feet off. WOW.... thats allot of data you've accumulated to come to your conclusions.... looks like you've done 3caches. do you work for magellan? I've owned more magellans than garmins and will say the garmins gpsr are way more accurate. wait till you've done more caches you'll probably see the magellans true colors. with my experience with magellan, 1/3-1/2 of all magellan GPSr seem to be defective/ buggy software from the factory.... now get magellan to give a crap when you do have issues. I agree magellan doesn't care about customers much and sorry if my data seems wrong to you, I'm just saying that this is what I have gleaned from tests. True, I don't cache much, maybe my opinion will change when I go and find more. Sorry if what I said was wrong.
  20. You can customize data fields on an explorist too. menu>customize page.

  22. Okay, I downloaded MacCMConvert. But all it is is a .sitx file!! What do I do? When I click on it, it says "no application is specified to open this. would you like to choose an application" What do I choose? Oh, by the way, whenever I go to the website more than once a day it is shown in some text format that looks ike it is from some computer in the 1990s.
  23. Sportopo is a badly built unit. The new units are very sturdy, rubber armored and waterproof to 1 meter for 30 minutes. The support does kinda suck. Garmin is just eye candy. The 60CSx is basically the 600 minus 2 channels, minus the three axis compass, minus the advanced features like area calc and stuff (don't know exactly), and I think minus the elev. profiling. Not sure if 60CSx is EGNOS enabled. Also, (please note this is in my expirience) the explorist is more accurate than the 60CSx.
  24. Just so you know, the 600 is basicaly the 500 plus all the features from the 300 plus 3-axis compass and thermomiter. I think the e-compass is essential.
  25. I started a thread asking if I could view my position on a computer screen on mapsend topo 3D or something but no one knew!!
