  1. "That being said, many stores have excellent return policies and if not satisfied, you can always return your purchase. I think that it comes down to your budget and personal preferences. No one GPSr will be 100% perfect. If I could combine the features on my eXplorist with the features on the Map60, we'd be close." one of the guys said this and I agree. If you could blend them together you could get a pretty close to perfect unit. Something I have learned from watching the boards is that usually the best reception is usually better on the Explorist units except when it comes to the Garmin GPSmap 60csx. Seems to me alot of people would agree that Garmin GPSmap 60csx has the best reception. Seems to me that you can get a better, less expensive unit in an Explorist. But if you want the best unit out there then get the Garmin GPSmap 60csx. Only thing I can see that I would like on my Garmin GPSmap 60csx that is on the Explorist 600 is the 3 axis compass and thermometer.
  2. I talked with someone at Garmin just last week about this same thing. They told me that they are working on a fix for all supported software and units so that they will work with macs. They told me that it would be a fix that would make the current software and hardware work with the mac computers. So if you already have software or a unit it will work with a Mac. The expected date is 1st quarter 2007. I would count on it to be the 2nd quater.
  3. I have had both an Explorist 400 and now have a Garmin GPSmap 60CSX. The 60csx in my opinion beats the Explorist 400 hands down. There are some features that this unit has that the Explorist 400 does not, but with the things that they have in common, this is the better unit (but you have to pay for it). The GPSmap 60csx looks like it is about a year or two ahead of Magellan with the Explorist units. Here are a few things that I like about the 60Csx: 2 double A batteries are great, Energizer rechargeable last for me about 18 hours. If they go dead, just pop in some new ones. -- The Explorist used a rechargable battery that last about 15 hours. It will only used this specific battery, you can recharge it in the unit but if you are no where around an outlet then there you are, stuck. Street routing. The unit gives you the option of street routing for shortest or fastest route. It give you audible prompts to let you know a turn is coming and also an enlarged preview of the turn. If you miss the turn it will automatically give you directions to correct your mistake. The Explorist does street routing but does not give you any options as to shortest or fastest route. It will not automatically correct your route if you have made a wrong turn and so far it does not seem to be as good at routing for truley the fastest route. The Explorist will only let you select a start and end point on street routing. The 60csx will let you select many points between your start and end. Many different ways to find poi’s. By city, intersection, address, type of location, previously found poi’s, and others. I did actually like the way Explorist handles the poi's with the exception of the address option. Explorist is rather cumberson with the address option. The 60Csx handles this alot better in my opion. Color screen is very bright and even changes to night mode automatically. The explorsist 400 had a monocrome screen that was also very easy to see. Both were no problem to see even in bright sunlight. Reception is excellent. I compared it to my Explorist unit and found that the Garmin unit would pickup satellites faster; it would also pickup stronger signal under heavy cover. According to the units display the Explorist would show a lower degree of error by a couple of feet and I never completely lost signal with the Explorist but have dropped to 2d coverage before. I have never dropped below 3d coverage with the Garmin unit. I could never get a satellite connection inside my house or my office, but I could get one with the Garmin unit no problem. It would get signal almost as fast inside as it does outside. I am sure that some of this is due to the external antenna. If you have the extra money this is the better buy, if you are not able to come up with the extra dollars the Explorist is still a good selection. That is what I think. Hope it helps
  4. I used Energizer batteries (2500 mah). I usually get 18 to 20 hours regardless of having the compass off or on. You get a better charge from one of the slower chargers. I use a 8 hour charger.
  5. Nope. Just let is slide man. It will be ok.
  6. I have a GPSmaps 60csx and it works really great for both of these. On the street routing. Maps are very clear. You have option for shortest or fastest route and it you make a wrong turn it automatically gives you the correct manuvers you need to make. I have also had an explorist 400. It does street routing but not nearly as good as the Garmin unit does.
  7. EraSeek is correct. You are getting WAAS info and 11 is very good. I usually average about 15 to 20 on my same unit
  8. I bought a Explorist 400 planning on upgrading to a color model later. I really wanted a Garmin GPSmap 60csx to start with. If I did it over again I would have started with the 60csx. It cost more money but is worth it to me. This is one really great machine.
  9. Here is the link to get N Route http://www.garmin.com/support/agree.jsp?id=575 Works great. Program is about 27 meg
  10. I confess! I'm guilty! I didn't notice! Me bad! Isn't it spelled "combative"? mogul2us Your explorist will also work with Microsoft Streets and Trips 2005 or 2006. Actually works better with it than with Magellan's software in my opinion. The 2006 version of Streets and trips has voice commands as well.
  11. I have used my unit with a 64 mb card and a 512. I don't notice any difference. I would not worry about it.
  12. CITY NAVIGATOR North America v8 dvd covers all of the US and you have the option of loading as much or as little map detail to your unit (given how much memory you have. Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tenessee, and some of Alabama take up about 190 mb. Buy the DVD new as it needs un unlock code and if you buy it used you probaly have no warrant. I bought mine from www.pagecomputers.com for $97. The Topo US is probably all you need as well. It coveres all of the USA with topo information and also has a great deal of street ino. This also you can load as much or as little as you want (given the amount of memory you have) Same area as mentioned above takes about 250 mb. You load both of these onto your unit at the same time and in the mao setup turn off and on what you do or don't want to show. I bought this one also at www.pagecomputers.com for $69. With both, depending on how much memory you have, you can load all of the state of Georgia, Georgia with all of the states around it, or the complete USA. It is really up to you. For your info. The Georgia topo plus street maps come up to 82 mb. They do have another topo program that is for different parts of the country but that only contains the national parks in that area. Probably not what you are looking for. Hope this helps.
  13. I noticed that on my 60csx on the signal strength page on the sometimes on the bars for signal strength there is a D . What does that mean?
  14. Thanks Red90. Was not sure what kind of screen my 60csx had
  15. Any of you guys ever have a problem with screen burnin. I have GPSmap 60csx that I leave on all of the time and just wondered if this would be an issue when the gpsr was just sitting still.
  16. I use Energizer's rechargeable 2500 mah batteries in mine with the backlight on 1/2, battery saver off, and the compass to come on at less than 1 mph for more than 15 seconds and get about 16 hours out of it no problem. Maybe you got bad batteries or a bad unit. You can also set the unit for whay type of batteries you are using. The alkaline will not last as long as others. But I would agree that you should get more than 5 hours. If you get these batteries and the charger get the 2500 mah batteries, they run longer. And get the 8 hour charger, it charges better and your batteries last longer.
  17. Any body have any phots of Garmins windshield mount for th GPSmap 60csx. All the pics I see on the web are all of the same view. I would love to see it from the side to see what kind of reach it has to make sure it will work fine in my car. Also, I saw that some of you guys are using a 12v usb adapter instead of the garmin round 4 pin plug. Any problems with that?
  18. I agree, sometimes it is just a problem with the map. The maps themselves are not always 100% accurate even if they are up to date. Not necessarily the fault of Garmin. Sometime the info they receive is just plain bad from their sources. Example would be streets being named incorrectly. Sometime this happens.
  19. I'm lowering the price to $250 on this deal with shipping to the USA included at priority rate. You can check out my feedback at ebay. I am at 100% with 84. The user name I use on ebay is beauxp. Email me if you are interest. Please only if you are serious.
  20. Great, thanks for the info. Did not want to fry my unit
  21. Can you only use the usb data cable that came with this unit or will any 4 pin usb cable be ok to use?
