So, I've talked about geocaching enough that a couple of friends want to try it, and I'm going to bring them out in a few weeks (when the weather is just perfect) to a couple caches in the area that are very nice.
In order to help make sure they have an enjoyable time, I plan on going out to the caches the day before to make sure they are still there, and restock them with good swag other than broken dirty happy meal toys and candy wrappers.
Sure I'll let them know the 'truth' about swag and bad caches, but I figure if the first couple finds aren't fun, they are less likely to want to continue.
Anything wrong with doing this in your opinion?

I hate when people hide caches in sensitive areas that cause this kind of damage.
spin it however you want, it's the hider's responsibility to avoid this. If every cacher even looks in one area, and 100 cachers try to find it, the area is destroyed.
do everyone a favor and archive it.

No, I wouldn't do that. I don't think that meets the spirit of the game.
Of course, I can think of valid reasons people would do it, and since the only person you are playing against is yourself, I don't see how it's anyone's business how you log your finds.
yes, I realize there are tons of "Cache police" out there who want you to log exactly as they do, but that's another thread, innit?

How many times have you found ground zero only to have it be 30' away from the cache? You could spend all day drilling holes.
exactly.

I'm likely to put out some underwater caches this year.
you would need a boat in summer to get them.
BUT
I was thinking the other day that it wouldn't be a bad thing if during the winter, someone simply walked out to the cache on the ice, and bored a hole over it with an ice fishing auger.
would require a bit of fishing to pull up the container if the water was deep, but would still be doable... though difficult.

I've never had a tick, and almost all my finds are "woods" finds, in tick infested areas. And when I'm not geocaching, I'm camping or hiking.
I thought I'd get one last year for sure, but so far, none.
maybe this year.

I injured my shoulder pretty good while walking back from a geocache event.
Some dude took a girls purse right in front of me, so I tried to catch him and ended up slipping on the wet cement and falling hard. (he got away)
That was 2 months ago, and I still can't fully move my arm.

My 2003 Sahara....

I can easily see the caches I've found in google maps.
they show up as big smiley faces.

I found a packet of seeds in a cache way out in the boondocks. They looked like they might be marijuana seeds and I didn't want little kids finding them, so I just poured them out all over an empty field on the way back to the car.
I've read that post several times, and I still can't tell if you are joking or not.

exaggerating your find count is bad.
exaggerating the "harm" done by a fake find is good.
I learned a lot here.

$8 is cheaper than an ammo can?! Where are you buying ammo cans?!
Around here, we pay $6 for a 7.62mm-size ammo can, $8 for a .50-cal.
I use the 7.62s for most caches, but it's sometimes nice to have a small, lightweight alternative.
.50 cal ammo cans were on sale a bit ago for $2.99 at fleet farm here.

The .gpx way is also more precise than the .kml method.
more precise?
One thing I did notice is that you don't get cache pages with the GPX method, only a bit of info. the KML method gives you much better info from the page.
versus:
they both seem to work though.

I don't really give a hoot how anyone else goes about their caching.
It's too bad for everyone that there are people who can't follow your example.
fortunately for all, people like them are mostly limited to hanging out here on the forums, and in my experience, most people in "the real world" are kinder and less concerned about trying to control other people.
-
ah thanks.
I thought it was a new worldwide "built-in" feature along the side like panaramio or such so you just had to check a box and all the caches in the world were pre-loaded (like google maps).
oh well. the gpx way is still good. thanks.
-
anyone else notice this thread is like the "groundhog day" movie?
-
how?
is it native in google earth, or do you need to use the gpx to kml tool? (I already have that)
thanks.

I won't cheat nor will I play with cheaters. They can play with themselves...
Everybody who geocaches is playing with themselves.
The only question is whether some people are watching other people play with themselves, and
nevermind. I'm confused now.
-
we can see caches in google earth?
sweet.
/me runs off to try to figure out how
-
Not at all. There are plenty of people who do this.
I have a GPS, (well 2) and I still look at google maps sat image to help on some caches, and to see if I want to bother looking for them or not.
Have fun!

It's imperative that all cache counts be totally honest and accurate.
How else are you going to determine your smugness and feelings of superiority by your count being higher than others if it isn't? (Your own dubious count find claims doesn't need to enter into the equation)
this is like the 3rd post to make me laugh out loud tonite. the forum is on a roll.

If you never stand up for what you believe in then you are a nothing...
This is true, but I'd hope a person could find a more noble pursuit on which to concentrate their efforts than trying to control how others play a *game*
