  1. Well the first thing you need to do is get a list of all South African caches. If you like I can send you this list. It includes all archived caches since the beginning. Then you will need to get all the logs for all these caches. With GSAK 7.<something> it has been very difficult. But with the beta release of GSAK 8, there is a menu which allows one to access the Groundspeak API, and one can get all the logs for all the caches. This is what DRM Raider has done with the beautiful YouTube vids. Once you have all the data in the SQLite database, then you can use any SQLite Query manager (there is one built into GSAK 8 as well) to access the SQLite database. You could also write a macro to process this info. I have now decided to take the plunge and start learning this macro language. Basic SQL knowledge will help. All you really need to know are join statements, and if you get stuck I am more then willing to help with SQL.
  2. Yea, best place to ask about macros is on the GSAK board. If you need help with the SQL queries Danie or I can help.
  3. WOW. Looks like the stats have gone to a new level. But I agree, we should get permission from the owners first.
  4. That was some awesome visualisations. Where to next? Can you maybe create one of iPajeros cache finds only? I think that will be impressive. Maybe with two colours. Once as caches become available in a dull colour, and then the colour changes as they find it. There cant be many left for them in SA,
  5. Yep, some of us have been playing with it for about a week or so now. The Geocaching.com menu option does feel "bolted on" at this point. Not that I am complaining. I am sure going forward it will become much more integrated with GSAK. I am in the process of getting all the logs again for my database. I really like the new "split screen" feel of the HTML page at the bottom. I wonder if one can modify it.... I would like the co-ords to be exactly the same as the GC web site. Just in case you don't know. GSAK version 8 is a paid for upgrade.
  6. YAY! Yay! yay! My feeling though, would not be one every year. But perhaps one every second year. I would love to attend each and every Mega event held in SA, but due to leave constraints, would not be able to travel, lets say down to Cape Town, and then Durban, for a week every year. Every second year I could still make some type of plan.
  7. I just published one in GP. http://coord.info/CX690
  8. Nay from my side as well. However, it does intrigue me to know can I do 600 caches in a day. I might join a team one weekend and attempt all 650, but I wont log it under DamhuisClan. Maybe I'll create a second caching name such as "DamhuisClan-GPS",. Maybe I wont log them at all. The caches are on my doorstep, and I am considering ways it might be acceptable for me (me not anybody else) to log them. Maybe I do them on a bicycle with the kids. Maybe I'll walk them like FE is thinking of doing. Doing 30 km in a day though would be very tough for me. At least then I feel like I have worked for it. But I still don't know if or when I'll be doing them I suppose the game / sport has evolved from a single cache in an area, to one in almost every park, and now to a power trail. Some like it. Some don't Some will come around to liking it. Some wont.
  9. Its possible that someone is PM, but does not use GSAK. This is then an alternative for them to get similar stats as to what GSAK produces.
  10. If you have a PQ of all your finds, and don't have / want to use GSAK, ther is a free alternative program available here called GC Statistics (Its in German) or the translated version here thanks to google. If the program is useful to you consider making a donation.
  11. cincol. Give me a call on skype. I'll help you with GSAK.
  12. I don't think cincol has GSAK. How would one calculate it manually? Hmm ... not sure. It must be possible somehow. I'll google a little and see if I can find an answer.
  13. What type of stats are you looking for? You should be able to copy the whole table (from the web page) and past it right into Excel. Then copy it from Excel into NotePad (pastes at TAB delimited text) And then back into Excel. This method will get rid of all the formatting. If you are looking for some other type of stats Danie or I might be able to help.
  14. Ok, Ill give it over to 7Gryph7. My calculations came out to 45 times. I find that amazing... just over 40 times. And getting to the sun is not that much more. Oh darn ... I see I counted the cells in Excel, and started the on the 3rd cell. So yes 42 is the (ultimate) answer (to life, the universe and everything) Over to you 7Gryph7
  15. I'd prefer to have the exact amount as the answer, if no one gets it my the morning, I'll give it to the closest guess.
  16. Oh wow a wild guess helped. You may use a calculator or Excel type program for this one: Given: A "special" piece of paper is 0.1 mm thick, It is possible to fold this "special" piece of paper double an infinite number of times. The distance to the moon is roughly 384,403 km. Question: How many times must this special piece of paper be folded double to reach the moon?
  17. What is the most common log entry? 1st : "TFTC" with 1086 entries. 2nd : "Logged from my phone using the Geocache Navigator by Trimble" with 275 entries. 3rd : "TFTC!" with 169 entries. 4th : "tftc" with 99 entries 5th : "TNLNSL" with 94 entries. 6th : "Easy find" with 76 entries. 7th : "Tftc" with 74 entries 8th : "Easy find. TFTC" with 68 entries. 9th : "Found it" with 65 entries 10th: "Thanks" with 61 entries. In this in a total of 292,719 log entries (Finds, Notes, etc). I have omitted a few "TB visits" and the likes such as "Maintenance reminder..." etc. The second one might be that the owner of the log entry later on updated his log entry on the web site, but the newest GPX file received only had the last 5 entries, and thus my DB was never updated.
  18. Congrats to GerhardoosMPsa on 2000 finds, and Wildbirds on 1100 finds.
  19. A TB can visit a cache with a "Note" as well. That is how travellers retro visit caches.
  20. Hi Anton, How about a similar calculation, but only the distance between Events and CITO's, so that we can see who is the most travelled social cacher in SA. Again a huge surprise. ... so much to that I think there is maybe an error. TOTAL Distance for Southern Africa: 268,704 km Top event cache distance visitors according do my calculations: DamhuisClan 8901.024006 Noddy 8483.315898 GEO936 8267.681125 Discombob 8258.984758 RedGlobe 7588.371661 Wazat 7435.409473 Fish Eagle 7202.037354 Tricky Vicky & Mickey 6093.851535 gerhardoosMPsa 5990.347845 ZAlandyman & Susieq 5871.430397 Jors 5683.843704 cache-fan 5192.124821 cownchicken 4729.975466 iPajero 4659.209001 BruceTP 4652.250881 CrystalFairy 4404.670074 DiePienaars 4250.444473 Goofster 4216.520666 rodnjoan 3966.207902 cincol 3825.312019 MadSons 3540.019806 Ysbeer 3539.161729 Sonsoekster 3351.443795 JPMZA 3198.146542 Whostops 2923.582075 I&J 2908.769686 g.i.s. 2878.871712 iNokia 2770.940884 JohnDou 2751.755118 peterch0204 2623.386266 Jesscat0204 2622.200018 Carbon Hunter 2588.126758 Far-Jar-Hug 2555.513641 I would have expected iPajero, and Fish Eagle to be at the top. Maybe it implies they plan better?
  21. Please IGNORE the stats above they are WRONG! Some people have contacted me, asking me to check my facts ... as something did not look right. Digging deeper, I came up with quite a few hundred empty logs in my database, and double checking 5 entries for various cachers to see that there are NON-DUPLICATE entries on the web page. This means my database does not have all the correct info for these stats.... and it seems I maybe should never have opened this can of worms. I am not sure how to delete the post to stop further misunderstandings.
  22. My Android can do everything: 1) Hunt the cache with the GPS 2) Paperless with the c:geo app 3) Take photos with the build in camera This is fine if we/I do a single cache on the spur of the moment, but I still prefer a separate device for each purpose. So If we go out caching I can keep my still camera (which doubles as a video camera if need be), and I can hand my GPSr to one of the kids and give one of the older kids my cellphone to get the cache details. Why not donate some of your older unused devices to newbies to try out?
