  1. Hey all... Before I joined the site, I lurked among the cache postings and noticed a cool cache that apparrently led to a very impressive tree in or near Beaverton. Sounded like something worth photographing! The cache itself seemed to be in a hollow at the bottom of the tree. I can't find it now, and it's driving me nuts! Anyone have any idea what that cache was? -Elana "Defenestrate XP!"
  2. "Aliens"... "geomuggles"... I have to grin at this. See, I hang with a science fiction crowd, and in THAT subculture, outsiders are called "mundanes". Come hang out at a science fiction convention (a REAL fan-organized event, not some Trek CreationCon for-profit thing, thank you) and you may find some SF fans playing "freak the mundanes". This is a game which consists of cruising the "real" world just outside the convention, say in a Safeway, in full costume, just to watch all the mundane brains grind to an incredulous halt... -Elana (who never joined such a game, but has laughed her head off at some of the stories she has heard... like the time some clueless hotel just HAD to schedule a SF con at the same time as a baptist religous convention... there's an occasional debate as to who melted down first...) 5. Team Joyson said: "I know that there have been other threads on this topic, but more along the lines of posting "virtual" caches with a temporary nature. The biggest concern was how to let people know once the "gift" was gone, but you've already stated that the real gift would be the view that one gets by visiting. It sounds like you're proposing a virtual cache with an added bonus for the first finder." _____________ You're kidding... me - only in my second week of geocaching - actually came up with something new for you guys?? THIS is too cool! While thinking about this, I was wondering how to alert wandering folks that the geogift has been found... OR how to alert the first finder that yeah, they are the first. To deal with this, I came up with something that I hope is cool. I may place a ribbon gift bow at eye level in a semi-obvious place near the hidden geogift. The first finder finds the bow and knows they are the lucky one. They take the bow and find the gift - and get to post their bragging rights on the site. Subsequent finders - hey no semi-obvious bow, don't bother looking, just enjoy the location. If/when I do this (and I already have a too-cool location in mind) I will let you know. If a virtual cache deal already exists on this site (me still a beginner, remember) then I will post it there. If geogifts become a tradition, they need to have a ribbon-bow icon, methinks! -Elana "Defenestrate XP!"

  7. I am curious... I wanna just take one item which is guraranteed to be very, very cool, go hide it in some equally cool place, and post here with the message " GeoGift Alert! Go get it!" The idea of a GeoGift is a cache that is MEANT to expire as soon as the geogift is found. It would make a kind of a race to see who finds it and gets the very-cool-thing first! Also part of the idea of the geogift would be to locate the thing in an truly unusual and very-cool location... so that thems who don't get the physical gift get the visual gift of a lovely or just-plain-neat place to discover. I'd post my notice of the geogift here rather in the cache pages, because of it's deliberate temporary nature. As they used to say in MST3K: "What do you think, sirs?" -Elana "Defenestrate XP!"

  9. "a multi-cache that will lead to a gathering place at the end." EEEK! I've just gotten started! Any chance just to share with me the coordinates at the endpoint so that I can at least have half a chance at finding the place? -Elana (reply to geo@(RemoveSpamtrap)dreamcircle.com "Defenestrate XP!"

  11. What happens if we cross the idea of geocaching with that of www.bookcrossing.com? THAT would sure add a new demension to both fascinating hobbies, for sure! -Elana PS: They'd have to invent new "geobookcrossing" stickers, I bet... "Defenestrate XP!"

  13. Hey all... just want to say hello to any fellow Oregonian geocachers out there. I just got my new Magellan 330 yesterday for cheap (who-hoo!) and am ready for this new adventure. My contribution to the local caches may be lots and lots of working AA batteries, that is, IF you guys think that is a good idea... because I have about a ton of them I don't know what to do with. Please let me know if that would be appreciated. Hope to see you at the next local gathering. -Elana (a.k.a.
