  1. Oh, I'm well aware that's not a single nibble . But another GPS wouldn't do much... this cat loves to chew on anything. But it actually WAS behind a closed cabinet door... that doesn't have a handle to boot (and isn't the type that you push in to click open, either). She just eventually somehow learned how to open it. Well... it's entirely out of reach now, at least.
  2. To make a long story short (and I didn't want to dredge up a year-and-a-half old topic where most of the image links no longer work in it), my cat has taken several swings at my Garmin 60Cx antenna since mid-2007. The first time was just a nibble... the second time several months later was a bit more thorough... and now just a few days ago, the cat decided that third time's the charm, and completely removed a chunk of the antenna covering. The entirity of the pictures and backstory can be seen on my website over here. So anyway, plastic/rubber removed from the antenna cover, I was left with a bit of a dilemma of the Garmin no longer being quite so waterproof. Apparently, my repair jobs have just been TOO easy for her to let it go unattacked Damage after attack 3. If you've ever wondered what the colour of the actual antenna is of a Garmin 60cx... there ya go: And my repair job. Somewhat hard to make out the actual detail because it's clear(ish), but I molded the glue into the shape the antenna used to be in that corner: I coulda used black plastic from a garbage bag under the glue instead of saran wrap (keep the glue from directly adhering to the inner antenna)... but I kinda wanted the translucent "window" to the antenna as a reminder to never leave it anywhere other than in the room the cats can't get into. It evidently wasn't safe behind a display case door that the cat somehow found a way to not only open, but get into, chew stuff, and then CLOSE the door after she left Anyone else have (preferably with before and after pics) of geocaching stuff and animals not getting along? EDIT: Oh, before anyone suggests... it's been suggested in the past that I call Garmin, and often they're good enough guys to replace units even in cases such as this. Unfortunately, said occurances don't occur in Canada. I tried calling the main Garmin line, and they said I needed to call the Canada office... who were jerks and suggested I just buy a new one
  3. I don't know if it's coincidence... seems rather peculiar if it is... but my brother years ago registered the name PurpleMonkeyDishwasher. About a year ago, some completely unrelated person registered 1purplemonkeydishwasher1, who lives in the SAME CITY! I've never met the second one, although I hope he (or she) sometime comes out to an event cache so I can meet 'em.
  4. I don't so much have a 'blog', but I DO have a website where I've documented most everything I've done involving my geocaching ventures. Included in there is pics of the various geocache containers I've made, as well as pics of the logbook pages after people have found them. Documentation of the various inventions I've built for geocaching (a chainmail wrapped geocoin, my signature items, making a GPS holder for the car, fixing my cat-chewed GPS antenna... 3 times... testing waterproof paper, etc, etc). But I typically don't post any specific tales of my geocaching on there... I have that in my logs (which are also saved there locally thanks to GSAK). Most of my logs need to be cut down to fit the 4000 character limit, so after posting them, there's not really much else to say in a blog that wouldn't already be there
  5. I've gotta side with Groundspeak on this one. What's a geocache if not a cache at a geographic location. And there's a perfectly good site for locations that don't have a cache... Waymarking as others have mentioned. If I'm in the mood for sightseeing, I'll check out Waymarking. If I'm in the mood for treasure-hunting, I'll go geocaching. As a personal preference, I much prefer the latter, since it typically has a healthy dose of the former in it anyway.
  6. In the OP's defense, mine may be waterproof (Garming 60Cx), but I'd still go with the age-old theory of "why take chances". Personally, I'd have triple ziplock-bagged all of my stuff and had that in a slim backpack (perhaps a camelback, so you have clean water... or failing that fill it with air for extra buoyancy). And back to the OP's initial post... ouch! So... WERE the fingers broken, or just sprained or something?
  7. You want to look inside geocaching.com's online store (or any store that supplies geocaching equipment) for a "travelbug tag" or TB tag. You attach that to your travelbug with a chain or whatever means you want, and the number on that tag is what tracks it.
  8. I'd refer to them the exact same way I refer to anyone in my logs who doesn't specifically geocache: bystander.
  9. I skimmed through it at Chapters when I happened to see it. I wouldn't bother with it... for the most part, everything in there is VERY self-explanatory. A decent portion of it is basically covered in the "getting started" section of the geocaching homepage.
  10. What I've learned: Have a few grocery store plastic bags with you at all times in winter. Best emergency-winter-boot ever! It may only last a short time before ripping apart, but that's usually enough to get you in and out of that snow. A short quantity of string and strong, rigid wire can be invaluable to have in your caching kit. Medical kits - no matter how short the trip is, have one in your caching kit. It'll seem like a space-waster most of the time, but the one time you DO need it makes it entirely worthwhile.
  11. Well, I'm not a math teacher, but I've been told on multiple occasions that I tend to exhibit obsessive-compulsive tendancies. A lot at times Right now I'm at 453 finds... which doesn't really have all that much going for it. Albeit it's apparently the hear Attila the Hun died, it doesn't really help much And with 73 DNF's, it's mildly interesting. It's the 21st prime number... and 7 x 3 = 21.
  12. Hardly. That's like me saying "I found a really cool cache about a block from a Tim Hortons" on whatever street. It's not advertising Tim Hortons, it's giving a point of reference more than anything else. But no cruises for me anytime in the near future. If it's there about 20 someodd years from how when I have the vague chance of being able to afford it, I might be able to retrieve it

    Gone

You can't directly (that I'm aware of, although there may be a way for all I know). You should send a message to the TB owners letting them know their TBs may be missing. There's a good chance that someone may have just picked them up, but have not yet logged them. Or simply forgot to log them, and they will eventually be removed from your cache when they're retrieved from wherever else they are.
  14. Eh. I just open the list of all cache logs, and you can just hit CTRL+F and search for it, if your list is too long to just scroll through quickly. Takes a slightly longer time, but if you have it bookmarked, it's a LOT faster than having to open a specific cache page, and then click on 'view all logs' and wait for the now longer-loading page to load.
  15. I say if you paid for it and it belongs to noone else, keep it as you wish. I only a geocoin (that's right... singular. I haven't been bitten with the addiction yet ), and it stays with me, travelling with me to any events I go to. That way, it CAN still be discovered and get some movement (from event to event). I even wrapped it in chainmail to make it look all fancy shmancy at the events
  16. That's pretty cool actually, confirming a muggle-find from half a planet away
  17. Mine seem to have come through. Not sure if the unchecking-rechecking made any difference whatsoever though... no way of telling. Perhaps mine came in not too late, because I only run two a week... both on Friday. It sounds like some people here have a whole whack of them running, which if I've heard correctly in the past, tends to get bumped down below people who run very few. I could be wrong however.
  18. Those chainmail balls are so cool! I would squeal with joy if I opened a cache and found one of those inside. Heh, thanks . They've become a bit of a collector's piece around these parts. Someone's even managed to get over a hundred of them EDIT: Blah, I decided to just upload images of my signature items to geocaching.com, since I want to post those images whenever this topic comes up. Here's my three main chainmail ball signature items:
  19. I have one of several, depending on the size of the cache. Typically, I create little chainmail balls for anything that it fits in (typically small and bigger... although they don't quite fit into an altoids container. Not that I consider that anything other than 'micro'... but others do. But I digress...). The micro mobius ball is the essential part of my avatar on the board to the left. Or both of them can be seen in my profile picture. Otherwise, I create little chainmail mobius-balls for the micro caches, and have ridiculously tiny mobius-balls for the nano caches. I have yet to find a cache it's not capable of fitting in Note: If you can't access the above link due to the site not liking hotlinking in that way (sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't... not sure why), then you can just scroll to the bottom of this page to see the different chainmail ball types.
  20. I can confirm that this doesn't only affect new PQ's. Mine, that were created probably over a year ago, were set for Friday (and usually come shortly after midnight on Friday morning), but still have not shown up. I've tried unselecting Friday and re-selecting it... I'll wait for about an hour and see if that does anything. Otherwise, come tomorrow I'll try to check them for Saturday and see what happens.
  21. A recent occurance: 444 finds, and 4 hides! Coming up soon is also 496, a perfect number. Combined with that, it's also a triangular, hexagonal, and centered nonagonal number. Truly, a very unique number. For added fun, it's binary equivilant is "111110000" . And other than the upcoming #500, the next big thing will be 100th prime number... 541. Don't mind me... I get excited over unusual things at times . Is anyone else sitting at a particularly unusual number? Some useful resources on wikipedia are list of numbers or prime numbers. As far as 'perfect' numbers go, the first four are 6, 28, 496, and 8128... so it's a bit unlikely I'll see the fourth one anytime soon .
  22. One thing that annoys me about the notification sent to your email, is that the email itself doesn't even contain the coordinates! So sure, even if I can read email through the cellphone, it'se useless if it either costs a lot to load webpages through your cellphone (goodbye pay-as-you-go minutes), or if your phone just can't display the geocaching page in general. What'd be actually useful is if the coordinates were in the email. Then I could just pop them into the GPS if I have it with me, and off I go.

    Useless Hints

One that always annoys me is "Hint is in the name". Yeah... 99.8% of the time, we already figured out the name itself was a hint. It's usually blatantly obvious when the name is a hint.
  24. There's a couple other sites that have geocaches posted on them. If you go to the wikipedia article on geocaching, it shows several possible sites. The links below that as well may be of use.
  25. WT´ler... you have two finds to date. Two. Y'know, if you want to change your name, instead of lashing out and being a jerk towards the first person to answer your question, you could... I dunno... delete your two logs, create a new username, and then re-log the finds. Heck, you could even copy the text from your first logs into notepad, and then re-paste them into the new logs. I'm guessing it was a language barrier that perhaps made you think that 'SUp3rFM & Cruella' was being snarky, but they pretty much just copied and pasted the text to the link. And it WAS a little newbieish to just ask something before attempting to find the answer on your own. So just chill before replying too quickly in the future.
