  1. You are quite correct, the Alaskan coins are double struck. The coins are all proof quality, produced by striking the planchets twice using a pressure of 160-180 tons with dies polished to a mirror finish . The edge of the silver and silver with gold relief coins is stamped "1 OZ .999 FINE SILVER." The edge of the gold coin is not stamped because the metal is too soft and the rest of the coin could be damaged during the stamping process.
  2. I agree, it always was a lovely coin, but making one called Oil Slick is sick in my book and in very poor taste.
  3. No need to return any coins to me, feel free to list them for sale on ebay and good luck with the bidding.
  4. You were right, I missed the word "their" in your comment. Yes, it was their most expensive to amke, until the Fear no Cache coin (I believe...could be wrong though). The most expensive coin made by anyone would be the Alaska coins which are 1 troy .999 silver with 24k gold overlay! Actually the most expensive coin produced was an Alaskan coin - but it was in solid gold and I believe only 10 were ever made, they retailed at $1095.00 each. As far as I know - gold does not tarnish, however if the plating is extremely thin, perhaps this has an effect, my 2006 Gold Compass Rose is certainly as bright and shiny as the day I received it, I do not keep it in a coinflip or airtight capsule, it sits in a display box.
  5. I'm in agreement to some degree that a coins value should not be determined by whether it has been activated or not, however, I do understand that others will feel differently and that really determines the answer to your question of value, if the 'majority' of the coining community perceive a coins value to have diminished by virtue of it being activated then that is how it is, regardless of how you or I feel about it. It is true that an activated coin cannot be used in most missions, unlikely to be accepted in trade for an unactivated coin and may also have some history logged to the coins page - although I have seen some people state in their sales blurb on ebay that the winning bidder can delete such logs !! Then there are also those that will make a paltry offer on the basis that the coins are activated, knowing full well that such an offer is well below a fair price - can't blame anyone for trying it on - just say no thanks. I hope the save Walter fund is growing apace and you will be taking him out caching again soon.
  6. This is the official Compass Rose page. It merely states gold plating here, but I too have seen it referred to as 24K Gold Plating - which is certainly available from some mints, so it would be nice to have a definitive answer to this question.
  7. The very best coin you could possibly have in your collection is the one that you like the best/means the most to you. It should not matter what regard it is given by others, you will get a different opinion from most people about any given coin. If you like it - that is all that should matter. One thing for sure is you are spoilt for choice, there are certainly some exceptional coins out there, I hope you find some to treasure and if and when you tire of any you can always trade for something new and different. Research, budget, and enjoy.
  8. Kiss me I'm Scottish and Céad Míle Fáilte is the correct Gaelic spelling, fortunately it is correct on the coin, even if they haven't bothered to use the correct accents over the e and the a. Otherwise a colourful coin, but Celtic knots are usually presented in more modest colours but I'm sure there will be plenty of interest in this one.
  9. Old news, this was reported at coinmatters.com days ago. I feel sorry for all those folks that went and ordered 250 tracking numbers just to get an icon. Just goes to show that nothing stays the same, I wonder if all these trackables will still be trackable in 10 years time?
  10. I have to disagree to a point. They want to keep their caching identity separate from they business and even I have recently done the same. Now, I have only produced one coin, so that is a bit different. I waited to create a new account because I wanted to be sure I was able to get the domain name I wanted beforehand. I can only assume that they created one due to the vendor issues of the last year. Since they didn't change the business name it should be fine; but they should have stated that in the first post they made with that account, the purpose of the account. Instead, someone else pointed the fact out first. Why do we want to keep separate accounts? I get many geocaching emails to my personal account that are watch list items, virtual cache related, or just caching friend related. Having the second account allows to have all the business stuff filtered out for easier/faster replies; not to mention accidental deletion, which has happened on some cache related emails. I do think that the business account one uses for the forums should be the same name as that of the business, and that account be the only official voice for the business. I have absolutely no problem with anyone using a 'business' account name and can fully understand your reasoning - but if a business chooses to post about its business using one account name and has done so since it started out - and now chooses to create a new and separate name for that business - whatever their justification might be, smacks of trying to hide the dirt under the carpet and start out fresh.
  11. I'm not sure myself, but even though Coinswag have not changed their name, they now choose to be associated in these forums with an account of that name, when in fact all of their past dealings on this board have been under another account name, amounts to the same thing to me.
  12. I absolutely agree, I mean if you can have a one thread per coin rule, there should be a one name per company rule too. If folks have messed up in the past, tough, live with it. But don't go and hide behind a new name. There should be something in the pinned topics at the top to show what names have been used and by whom, that way new folks searching the forums can get to see the whole picture.
  13. That coin was made by Ernies - I would contact them direct for activation code information at e r 9 @ g m x . n e t
  14. Another round of fantastic photos - many thanks intolerable for all those great photos, looks like mightyzinn enjoyed the experience too, and Stephanie - that is some back yard you have there (again, love the photos).
  15. I have to disagree with this. The coins that we have received in the mail, (free and clear gifts), are very special to me, and mean so much more. Absolutely - of course it's cool to find them in caches but there are a whole bunch of folk that would never ever get the chance of receiving a mystery coin had they not been sent in the mail. Thank you mystery coiners for all the smiles you bring to folk.
  16. Two really cool coins arrived in the mail this morning .......................... Thanks to Forthferalz for persuing this great project, even though at times it must have been very frustrating, thanks also to Pabloturtle for distribution.
  17. I thought the wrong sort of snow was Yellow Several feet have kept me home for far too long, it's all melting away fast and furiously now, the road looks like a burn.
  18. This was the view from our house last week and prevented me from attending an event at the weekend on the West Coast
