  1. I found one cache in an urban park after dark. I was driving through on a road trip and I had to start a travel bug off at that cache, and evening is when we happened to get there. In retrospect, that was pretty stupid - who knows what we might have run into in an urban setting like that. I dragged my husband along with me, but he was pretty pissed. Don't think I'll try that again anytime soon.
  2. quote:Originally posted by Greyflank:What is it about ticks, anyway? They drink your blood until they are full, fall off, and then die. Where does that fit into their life cycle? They have to eat something before they get big enough to bite thru your skin and I know they start off mite sized. Why isn't that enough for the rest of their lives? ... I mean, I understand why a mosquito bites... it's only the female ones and its for fertilizations if I rememember correctly. I know I could look this info up, but I've seen enough ticks this weekend. *nods* ... This Horse Writes As I understand it your blood is their food. They feed on deer and other mammals too. I had Lyme disease two years ago and I have no desire to try that again. Here's my question: how can you tell if you have a deer tick? What I've heard is that the bigger ticks, the ones that are easy to see (about the size of a nailhead), don't carry Lyme disease. The deer ticks, which do, supposedly are pinhead-sized. I never saw the tick that gave me Lyme disease - I had something on the back of my knee but I thought it was just a scabby bug bite. How can you tell if you get one of these things?
  3. Thanks to everybody for the helpful hints. I'm afraid I'm not sure how to upgrade the firmware... is there an FAQ I can check?
  4. That's not cold, it's just a fact. No doubt about it, bottle deposits are a good thing.
  5. In urban areas like mine, the few patches of woods are shared by underage drinkers and the homeless, both of whom tend to leave lots of skanky empties around (not to mention lovely makeshift bongs). At least one cache in our area disappeared because it was placed too close to a homeless encampment. I removed three bags of trash from the fireplace near this cache, and I even uncovered someone's makeshift potty by accident . This was about 200 feet from a rec center with lots of trash cans
  6. Hello all, I've been geocaching since September 2002 but this is my first time on the forums. I have a question about Legend accuracy. I got the unit in September 2002. The accuracy was OK at first (I could generally get 12-15 ft. accuracy). Then in December I went to a cache that was hidden right underneath a power transmission line. The GPS pointed me over 100 feet away (into a monster patch of thorns ) and we only ended up finding the cache by coincidence just as we were leaving. After that we went to look for another cache, that was hidden down the line under another tower - same thing, the GPS pointed me consistently to a point about 150 feet away. Ever since then my accuracy has been shaky. Occasionally it works fine, but most of the time the spot indicated is about 40-50 feet off from the cache. It could be that the receiver is weaker under tree cover now than it was before. Any suggestions? Does the unit need recalibrating? I think it might still be under warranty. I am inclined to return it because aside from the recent accuracy problems, the waypoint-marking function crapped out after about two and a half months and I haven't been able to use it since. I'd be grateful for any insight. Thanks, Sugar
