  1. When you get the cable try QuakeMap - it will instantly load all your caches/waypoints and do a lot more. There is also Palm PDA companion software to show maps and caches on the road. Happy trails! http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  2. Just wanted to remind everybody that to use MapAdvisor you need to PRESS AND HOLD Ctrl key before clicking on "PDA" menu item in QuakeMap. Otherwise clicking on "Start Camera Tracking" will pop up a Help page. We will remove this requirement in the next build of QuakeMap. Happy Trails! http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  3. Battery life is the biggest problm with PPC; Palm-based PDAs drain less current for some reason. Screen resolution may be a HUGE factor if you want to see maps on the road. Here is a little outdated list of Palms you can at least do something with: http://www.earthquakemap.com/pda.html Memory card (for maps) won't hurt. Happy trails, http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  4. QuakeMap can track current position; I am not sure abour Rino 120 (should be ok) and Canada (all depends on Terraserver) though. Keep in mind safety concern above (and general distraction from driving). http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  5. I didn't realize you already have it hosted, but anyway, here is another link to it: VistaLedRepair.pdf Thanks for the info! http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  6. Anyone knows how to start S&T at a particular point (lon, lat, scale) programmatically? Command line options in S&T2003 couldn't do it... I do run S&T from QuakeMap menu, but it would be nice to have it pop up at the same point where my screen is... slg@quakemap.com http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  7. >> Pop me an email with a return email and I'll be happy to send it out to you ... it's a PDF file about 335KB in size. I can host the file on my server and post the link here, zip it and email to slg@quakemap.com if you please! http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  8. 1. you don't need to go to Alaska for a view you would enjoy 2. no matter how good is my kid's GPS, he will envy his brother's 3. a good beating at geocaching.com does more good to software than rave reviews http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  9. If you want to get real fancy with the routes and trip logs, make them annotated: http://www.quakemap.com/newfeature.html http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  10. Try QuakeMap - especially if you have a newer XP computer, and Garmin or Magellan GPS. Just drag and drop your GPX files into QuakeMap window, and see them instantly. http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  11. please send it to me too (please zip it first) - slg@quakemap.com - I will validate and see how QuakeMap chews it up http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  12. Request Pocket Query in zipped GPX format, unzip/save on hard drive. Drag/drop to QuakeMap window. As for geocaching along the way, you can get as many .loc files as you want by clicking along the route. Not as good as PQ's, but good enough to see them all on the map. Happy trails, http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...

  14. For general use (not to get lost) I find Streets loaded into GPS most useful. For hiking/geocaching you better carry a printout of aerial map (I sure use QuakeMap to do that). Topo printout is useful, but I rarely have it on me when I need it :-) http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  15. Keep in mind that if you want to use it for displaying topo/aerial maps, you will need some serious memory and a 320x320 screen at least. The table here http://www.earthquakemap.com/pda.html may be useful. This is how it looks on a 320x320: http://www.earthquakemap.com/demo/pmap.jpg http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  16. Just wanted to mention that alkaline batteries drop voltage in time proportionally to the used capacity, while NiCd and NiMH hold 1.2 volt pretty steady till the last point, and then die rapidly. I don't know if this explains your Geko 201 behavior. http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  17. Kind of strange that you mentioned 750MAh - most NiMH batteries now fall into 1600-1850MAh range, and 2200MAh are out (http://www.thomas-distributing.com) There is a wealth of info on batteries in the forums, you can use Find tab, search for "NiMH" Here is an interesting FAQ: http://www.greenbatteries.com/documents/Battery_FAQ.htm Happy trails, http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  18. I agree with Alan2, map printout and cache page printout are my main tools too. I use QuakeMap to print out aerial map with coordinate rulers, street map for the vicinity of the caches, load all caches for the area from Pocket Queries or .loc file to GPS, and print out cache pages. At this point the map in GPS doesn't matter - all you need from GPS is direction/distance to cache and exact current coordinates. http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  19. Make sure you shut down all your PDA programs. They tend to grab the com port and prevent GPS software from reaching the device. You do need mapping software (EasyGPS was mentioned). You may want to try QuakeMap - it has tracing capability, it will tell you exactly what went wrong with communication line. http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  20. If you are using Pocket Queries, all caches that you logged as "found" on geocaching.com will be marked in the PQ. I just save PQ in GPX format in the same place, QuakeMap reads the file on start, and I see the caches on the map. With a couple of clicks all caches are loaded to GPS - including the new ones, and the "found" ones are marked with different icons. http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  21. Pocket Queries are files that are e-mailed to you once a week by geocaching.com database server. You have to become a Premium member ($30/yr), and also use appropriate page to set up your query. I suggest to request PQ in GPX format. When you receive them as attachment - just drag/drop them on QuakeMap window - you will instantly see the whole set of geocaches in your area. You can do it with .loc files too, they are available for all members, but don't contain that much info. As for things to take with you - I would add: -- printed aerial map (use photo printer/paper) -- extra batteries for your GPS -- lots of water Happy trails, http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  22. Don't forget to check out "GPS Units and Software" forum - you will find lots of time-saving hints there. The main goal is to get .loc files (or, better, Pocket Queries), load them to your GPS and have a REAL GOOD printed aerial map of the area (QuakeMap will do it), and a printout of the cache page(s). The rest is just using your GPS and hoping for some luck. Happy trails, http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  23. The interesting question is what you do with coordinate-linked photos after you bring them home. One of the ways of managing your collection is to dump the photos on the internet (on the web server) WITH YOUR TRACK LOG and have selected trackpoints linked to the photos. See example at http://www.quakemap.com/newfeature.html http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  24. SporTrack Pro is a usable unit, but if you want to use your GPS for driving - GPS V is much more fit for this. I also noticed that tracks accumulated by SporTrack are not as smooth as on Garmin units, due to different sampling rate. http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
  25. Try QuakeMap - it downloads waypoints, marks found geocaches, loads your track logs and shows them in fine detail (you can even link trackpoints to your photo collection, see http://www.quakemap.com/newfeature.html ) http://www.quakemap.com - redefining Easy...
