  1. I used to be able to load wherigos on my phone via the geocaching app.   I would click to download and it would download to the Android program WhereYouGo.  About a month ago, that quit working.   I was in another city, clicked to download, and got the message that the download failed.   i tried going though the Wherigo web site with the same results.  That has continued to be the results for any Wherigo.   I uninstalled the WhereYouGo program, reinstalled it, and get the same results.

I asked at a geocache event, and got the information to use Geooh program on my phone.  Loaded that app, which costs money.   It has a heading for wherigos, but no instructions.  Not being computer nor phone literate, I cannot figure it out.

Any ideas?  Or how to fix it?

  2. This has happened at least five different days.  I post a Find or Attended note (post, not save as draft), my total number of finds goes up, and a yellow smiley face shows up on the map on the phone app.  Same thing if I first Save as Draft, then change to Post.  When I get home and look on the computer at the geocaching.com web site, however, there is nothing there.  No smiley face, no draft, no increase in count, no log.

I understand it may take awhile to travel through cyberspace, but how long should I allow?  I have waited up to 3 days, but afraid I will forget which ones I found if I wait longer.

It is especially frustrating if I added details about the condition of the container, the log, or location.  I guess I need to make written notes to know what I did and found.

This is the geocaching.com app on an Android Motorola smart phone.

  3. First of all, thanks for letting us opt out of the new map!

The new system loaded automatically when I turned on the laptop this morning and I was surprised to see it covered only a short distance, no caches found, so I had to zoom out to get anything listed.

But there was a problem right away.  Clicking on a mark on the map  gives NO information at all!

If the new format is supposed to help geocachers find caches, one would expect some information.   How would one know whether they wanted to go to that location?

Another concern I have is that it does not give option to open things in another tab, so have to click to get the ratings and then click to get the description, puzzle, or instructions, maybe click more to get browser page, then click multiple times to get back to the map.   It would sure be easier and faster to open a new tab per geocache, not losing the map to look at the details.

List of what is shown on the map covers up about a third of the map, so those items are in fact not shown

Again, the new system does not meet my most important needs, so I am glad to opt out of it.

  4. As someone who lives in a rural area, here are some issues that may arise:

The geocacher parks on a person's property.

The geocacher causes dogs to bark, cows and horses to run away.

It looks like they might be doing somethng suspicious since people do not usually stop along a rural road to check out the guardral except for road workers

It causes concern if a farmer has property/crops nearby, might you be doing somethng to the soil?

If there is a water source or ditch nearby, concern you are dumping something into it

Question whether you are ditching trash or stray animals on their property?

As property owner it is their responsibility to cut grass, maintain it, etc., which means you have no business beng there or might be messing with their stuff.

The best thng to do is ask permission from the adjacent land owners.   Also any houses that may have a vew of the geocache hiding area.

Yes guardrails are DOT or Highway Dept property, not the person's property, but did you get DOT or Highway Dept's permssion to use their property?

  5. On the other hand, here's a bookmark list titled "Indiana State Park Geo-tour":

    https://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.aspx?guid=29ac331d-2a08-4bca-8cf1-3f0a76aa1082

I have not heard it called a geo-tour. It is just a special state park activity for their centennial year. The geocache game ends November 6, 2016.

The above bookmark list is missing six of the participating State Park caches:

    GC6JKTF,

    GC6JD7G,

    GC6JD86,

    GC6JD8K,

    GC6JD8C,

    GC6JD6B.

This is not a "challenge" in the traditional geocache sense. Think of the layman's use of the word "challenge". The Department of Natural Resources is challenging people to visit the parks, and while there to do certain things.

There are other games which do not involve geocaches, but challenge people to do other things, such as hike X number of miles.

  6. In the second half of April there was an update and since then the files need to be in a different directory.

See also this topic about it.

Thanks so much!! There were duplicate files in Internal Memory and on the SD card. The former worked, the latter did not.

Don't know why there are duplicates, and right now I don't care. Getting ready for a trip and wanted to be able to do some whereigos. This has been driving me crazy for over a month. Thank you. They appear, now just need time to get to a location and try it out.

  7. I have a Moto 3G smart phone, which I got in January 2016. I loaded the WhereYouGo app from the play store and did 6 Wherigo geocaches in March and April, 2016.

In May, and again in June, I loaded Wherigo cartridges the same way, but now when I open WhereYouGo app and click start, it says,

"No Wherigo cartridge available. Add cartridge file (*gwc) into /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/menion.android.whereyougo/files/directory

    and start WhereYouGo again"

When I connect the phone to the PC and look on Windows Explorer, I see the gwc file is in the WhereYouGo file. By looking on the PC nor on the phone can I find the file name listed above.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app, tried with my husband's Moto2G phone, used different browsers for downloading the gwc file. All come up with the same result.

I have found a file with emulated/Android/data/menion.android.whereyougo/files. Tried moving the cartridge there. The gwc file shows up under that directory, but I still get the same message when I try to start it.

Any ideas on how to make it work?

  9. Instaled Firefox browser.

Tried sending a geocache to Garmin GPSr - said had to download Garmin Communicator.

    Again installed Garmin Communictor.

Tried sending a geocache to Garmin GPSr - said Firefox did not accept plug-ins. Recommended downloading a patch to Internet Exporer.

    Downloaded patch.

Tried sending a geocache to Garmin GPSr - again got message that Firefox did not accept plug-ins.

Retried with Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Internet Edge .... none accept plug-ins even though I keep downloading patch and clicking OK to run that plug-in.

Wondering if I need to uninstall Windows 10 and go back to Windows 8.1. That would send o GPSr from Windows Explorer, not Chrome. Previous edition of Wndows would work from both Internet Eplorer and Chrome, but the computer died.

  10. Hello all!

Picked up an eTrex 20x today, and when I plugged it into my windows 7 PC, it failed to recognize the device, and therefore, I cannot get garmin express or anything else to see the device. My GPSMAP 64s works just fine. Garmin is closed for the day, so I thought I'd try here for any ideas.

    Thanks!

    Justin

This is how mine worked: 1) Download Garmin Express to the PC. 2) Connect eTrex20 to PC 3) Open Garmin Express and select Add New Device. 4) The Garmin Express program found the etrex and asked if I wanted to add it.

    Good luck!

  11. Previously I searched from my home page too, which is set to default my home location and up to 100 miles away. It changed this morning to the new search, so the maximum default distance is 10 miles, which is maximum of 23 caches not yet found. If I change it to 30 miles I get up to 523 caches. That limited distance might work in a big city, but in a rural state, one has to search further than 30 miles away.

I had not seen the cache list/map on the profile page before either. Thanks for that info. I sure hope they don't change that one too!

  12. I also use a Garmin eTrex 20 and had the same problem. Change browsers. I know Internet Explorer works for me.

Google no longer supports Garmin Communicator, which is needed to send info from computer to GPSr. I don't know if that was a decision by Google or Garmin. There may be other browsers that did the same.

  13. What do you like most about challenge caches?

I enjoy challenge caches and the "reward" of completing the challenge. They give an incentive to search for certain caches, especially those that are out of my usual caching routine.

What do you not like about challenge caches?

The difficulty of finding qualifying caches for certain challenges, such as alphanumeric ones.

What would you like to see changed about challenge caches?

Be a separate icon from other mystery caches. The Mystery category seems so be a catch-all.

If you could describe your favorite challenge cache type, what would it be?

Finding X number of caches/ types of caches/ certain words in title/etc.

What types of challenge caches do you avoid?

Those which require things involving skills I don't have, or travel I can't afford, or more bookkeeping than I am willing to do.

  14. I know I have seen this topic somewhere on the Forum, but could not come up with it in Search.

Here is the situation -- I asked a landowner for permission to place some geocaches. It is land that is privately owned, but public is permitted to use it much of the time. I knew there were already a lot of caches on the property and assumed they had some kind of format.

It turned out that they did not know there were geocaches on their property. While not opposed to having geocaches, they would prefer to know about it. They did want to restrict placement from certain areas, such as where erosion was a problem. The problem is that some geocaches are already located in the areas they want to restrict. How is the best way for the owners to deal with that?

I can look up the people on my geocaching.com account and give the land owner that information, but it seems like there is a more direct route for the landowner to let the reviewer or someone know, so those caches are dealt with through appropriate channels.

Clarification -- I'm the only person the landowner knows who does geocaching, so she asked me who/how she should contact. I didn't know, so I was asking the Forum. I gave her the geocaching.com web address, but didn't know if that was the right route.

  15. In my ETrex 20, Lithium batteries last longer than Alkaline. If I'm out caching, I turn it on shortly before the first cache and leave it on until the last one. Frequently turning in on and off seems to eat up the battery power, just like a long backlight does.

  16. I am preparing to hide my first geocaches. I've read and printed out the Groundspeak Rules. I would like some confirmation regarding from whom to ask permission. Also, what do I need to submit to the reviewer to show that I have the required permission?

A person's house or farmland is private property and needs their permission. Also landlord's permission if it is a leased property,

Same with a business. If they rent, I would also need permission of the landlord/landowner.

Not-for-profits (e.g. churches, trails, nature preserves), need permission from the owning organization.

State, city or privately owned parks that are open at times for the public use. Permission from landowner.

Traffic signs and guardrails are property of the county or state highway departments. They are often on private property easement, so one needs permission from the highway department and the landowner.

Lampposts belong to the electric company and/or the landowner. Need permission from all parties.

I can't think of anything that is "public", not owned by someone. At least, not in this part of the U.S.

  17. That is happening on both of our computers today too.
