Regarding Va. Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries:

Geocaching is not an approved activity on wildlife Management Areas. We appreciate your assistance in informing the public that this activity is not allowed.

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries used to have a link about geocaching, including a link to geocaching.com itself. Can't find it now. I wonder what changed. It's not as if, there are a whole bunch of geocaches on those lands. I only have to believe that it's the influence of the NPS pushing their uninformed position on geocaching.

Found it in the google cache, guess they've had a change of heart since April. No geocaching incidents since then. Hmmm, I wonder who's made them change their mind.

  3. Ok Gang

First off I have a Garmin Etrex Legend

    Mode is set to Garmin.

Please I am using a USB to Serial Adapter Cord. I am able to use it on my other programs that require a

Serial Connection. I have down loaded all drivers that I could find for the Garmin.

But Can not get it to with the GSAK.

The Following settings are on the Garmin

The set up on the GSAK is

    GSPr is Garmin

Com Port 5 (as verified by the Device Manager)

Speed of Port is Greyed out and set to 9600.

I am getting the following erroe,

    Error sending waypoints

GFS_Packet_Read: No DLE. Data recieved, but probably not a garmin

[Error] CreateFile on on 'COM5' failed: Access denied.

    Garmin: Can't init COM5

Any help would be apprecaited a lot

Please note that I can get the

    Thanks

I have the same exact setup. I had to install the software for the Serial to USB adapter. But I'm assuming that you already did that. Given that once you set up the connection, it will only work in one USB slot, as each slot is mapped to a different COM port. So try each of your USB slots, and you don't need to start the computer with it connected, unless you have a very old operating system.

  4. I've looked at a few puzzle cache listings but have no clue at all about where to start. One was just a list of states. Where do you go with that? Maybe my tin foil hat is blocking satellite reception, but I just don't have the magic. Help?

I knew which one you were talking about especially when I saw that you were from Virginia. I've solved this one, just haven't driven far enough to get it yet.

The first thing you should know about puzzle caches, is that you're generally trying to get a Lat/Long out of it. So generally you look for a pattern which includes the first number of your Latitude, which is '3' your case. Look up the first state, and see if you find anything that has a '3' associated with the first state. Works in about 25% to 50% of the mystery caches depending on how mystery happy your area is.

  5. I have found several locations were I would love to place a cache; however, the area is unsuitable for a cache.

I would like to place a virtual and understand this is now impossible thanks to GC.comand their inability to find a solution(other than stopping all new placements) for the number of ill placed virtuals, yet I would like to see them come back. My solution is this, to place a new virtual several conditions must first be met; the placer would have to take several pictures of the location and show why it would be a good place for a visit, second they would have to get five cachers within 50 miles of it, and lastly write a note on why a traditional cache should not be placed here for whatever fit reason. This I believe would solve the past problems and allow many fun new places to be visited were traditional caches are not appropriate. I would enjoy having them back on GC.com instead of Waymarking, because I don' enjoy the other site as well.

If you want to make someone go to a virtual cache, make it into a multi or mystery, and take information from the virtual spot, to fill in coords for a physical hide. I know, not the best solution, but it works well.

  6. I was wondering what other people have found as an FTF prize or if it was found much later.

I found a FTF prize in a cache, two days after it was published on the AT trail. The cache was a huge Ammo can. Inside the ammo can was, a small camo ammo can with "For FTF Finder" all over it.

    Inside the Ammo can was:

    a camo decon container

a pill container, with 4 engergizer batteries

    a carabineener light

a Write in the Rain book

    a disposible camera

    a small geocaching.com container

    pens and pencils

    a pencil sharpener

and $35 gift certificate to Best Buy(I think I'm forgetting some items). All with the laminated congratulations for being FTF. I was in shock at the amount of booty in there for the first person. So I emptied my pockets of all my cash, and put it in cache.

But that wasn't all, there's were at least 6 more pill containers with 4 energizers each, along with many of the same items for future cachers. To this day, I'm still in shock, to the amount of money and effort was put into the cache.
