  1. You got me thinking...

Not being a US citizen I still spend about a third of my time caching in NJ and have approx. no clue about the local wildlife (other than ticks, racoons and bears which are relatively easy to tell apart. Even from a distance). Since I spent most my time in parks... Can I see the picture of the spider again? *shudder*

Question: Is there a good pocket guide to the local animal wildlife that you can recommend to take along when caching in the Northeast... Sorry Mid-Atlantic section??

Preferably one that covers (2), 4, 6, and 8 legged critters? @m@zon is only mildly helpful.

Any tip would be very much appreciated

Congratulations on collecting the 1000th smiley at the Central Jersey CITO 2009-West.

  4. NAchdem die Forumssprache Englisch ist werde ich mich daran versuchen:

Hello, I am more absolute beginner in geocatching, that´s why I traid to find a catch in my home town. My first attempt was still with a portable Navi what I have fast given up, however. If a GPS device has shopped to me then by Ebay (Garmin Etrex) and I try with it yesterday immediately over again tried. Could limit with the GPS then whole already on a certain surface (approx. 10 m ²) where it should be to be found. I, however, not found. Now I am frustrated a little bit. Can you give a few tips, how can I even more exactly limit it or how can I find it best?

(Sorry my English ist not very good, thats why a online translater has help me.)

    Nicbo

Being a native german speaker let me also help you put a bit. I apologize to the rest for typing german.

Short version: Refered the OP to a german forum and added the suggestion to join an experienced cacher for optimal learning experience

...or, in case a moderator is reading this and trying to figure out what Babelfish makes of the above: This is specific to Austria, I suggest to move ot to the german speaking section of the forum.

    Hope this helps

Vinny, I mock you mercilessly. You wouldn't know a good American beer if you got hit over the head with it!

Besides, your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries. :anibad:

Well... probably because there is none...

But maybe I should leave here, before anyone notices so far I chickened out of every 5/5. 5/3 or 2/5 is the bravest I got so far. I am in awe... ;-)

    T.

  7. 1. Yes. Just save the cache page as a HTML file complete. Then open that on your non-internet computer.

    ...snip...

I guess this (above) is your best option. Use the 'save as...' option in the 'File' pull down menu of your browser and save it to your USB stick. Check if spoilers or other info is 'hidden' (via link) on the page. Save extra if needed.

Then open on computer with printer and print.

    Hope this helps

    Thore

P.S. Files then can also be transferred to any PDA or BB that can display HTML files (has a browser). This would be a way for a 'member' to go paperless with a limited number of listings. I know, I have. T.

  8. Hi.

    2) For home cords. Enter a waypoint called home, with your cords. While on that waypoint open the menu and choose it as your home cord. Then you can sort on it for direction and distance. You can also do this rather quickly while you are at one cache and looking for the next closest one.

    ...snip...

    Johnling,

thanks for the reply. I figured my 'import' problem out (wrong OS version installed, silly me)

    as for your point 2).

I guess I do need to have to use the BB as my GPS to get to that feature?

I cannot find either option in any menu at the moment.

I only use the BB 'offline' to manage the listings, much like GPXview. That software had the option to enter home coords manually w/o creating a waypoint und 'settings'. (maybe a suggestion for a future option?)

    Thanks again

    Thore

  9. Hi.

Found this thread to be the most useful to dig up for my questions.

I downloaded the trial version of CacheBErry to test yesterday and installed on BB 8800. Worked excellent and I like the general handling. My questions:

    1. Can't import from SD chip. Option 'Import' is not available in the menu and I have not been able to make it work by any other means. Using USB works, but has certain letters (ÄÖÜ °) displayed as ?

    2. Can't enter home coords to get distance and bearing

Are these items that will go away with the registered version?

Also the filter option 'by find' is of limited use imho.

Maybe further options, like by size, distance, bearing, diff or terrain could be added in a later version?

    Any response is appreciated

    Thore

  10. ...snip...

If the cache was at the posted coordinates then it certainly should have been listed as a traditional. If not, then the reviewer was right about it being a puzzle/mystery.

But, if there's an Additional Logging Requirement such as "The hunt can only be performed at night, upload a photo at the time of the hunt - night only" the reviewer was correct, right? Even if the geocache was hidden at the given coordinates.

    ...snip...

Still, if the cache is clearly to be hunted at night, it's certainly very clear in the description.

Intersting, I have seen Nightcaches listed as Multi-Caches only so far (locally here in GER). But then I usually filter Mystery Caches out, unless Bonus or finals for series.

Extra Icon? No. Simplicity is one of GC main strengths. Combine that with the amount of variation you get in hides (and people) and you get a great hobby. No need to make matters more complicated, IMO.

    Thore

P.S.: Chess is another example. Most simple rules and huge complexity when played well and seriously thought about.

  11. My personal rule(s) of thumb for puzzle caches:

    - innovative puzzle (e.g. reading #s off airport runways using GE for coords, not the 15th cypher variation)

    - Quick to understand (figuring out the question/point of the puzzle)

    - I have an idea on how to get the solution

gets me started to work on it.

    I

    - usually don't work longer than 15 min on the puzzle unles I am really getting somewhere.

(To me GC is an outdoor experience, I spend way too much time in front of this *§&$ screen anyway. As demonstrated by this post ;-) )

    - give up quite easily

So out of 10 I usually discard 5 right away, 3 I would read description, 2 I would start and out of those 0,5 to 1 make it to the search.

And I do agree that some puzzle caches are more about the puzzle than the cache... And while I understand that that is the purpose of a 'puzzle' cache, for me it defeats the purpose of the puzzle 'cache' and that's what I am in for.

    Thore

and yes I am a little jealous of the people with the smarts to figure out the puzzle and the time to go hunt the cache. T.

The translation is a little more liberal to capture the gist of what you want to say. I suggest to have a manual translation made for french and spanish as well. Try posting it in the regional section of the forum. I am sure some have versions that are far better than mine.

    Hope this helps

  13. I definitely see caching traits in different people. Each person has a different mix of these basic traits (there are more traits but you get the idea):

Urban cachers - if you enjoy wandering city streets and parking lots and finding caches with muggles around.

Numbers cachers - If the number of caches in an area effects your decision to cache in one place versus another. If you stay out really late trying to get more caches. You know who you are...

Hiking/Biking/Off-Roading cachers - if you enjoy nature and scenery while hiking, biking or off-roading

Puzzle cachers - if you enjoy solving puzzles

Social cachers - if you enjoy events and hanging out with other cachers.

Loner cachers - if you prefer caching by yourself.

Let me apply the "TrailGators Cacher Classification System" or Tra-C-ClasSy to myself for a second.

    I ... would be a Loner-Offroad-Numbers-Cacher, or a 'LONC'.

I choose my areas to hunt to preferably wooded areas where I can cycle based on cache density. My second option is hiking. Only upon failure of those two I revert back to Car-Assisted-Caching as a last resort.

I usually pack my bike in the car and drive into the area and then cycle. I live in an area where the cache density is high, so a 3 hr tour by bike, once a week quickly results into about 14 finds.

I like good caches of all sizes and found that I have to kiss a lot of frogs (micros) to find a princess (couldn't care less for a prince ;-) ) or a good one. *

My finds are distributed 30% US 68% Germany and 2% other countries. Snce I travel a lot across the pond I usually take a handful of TBs/ Coins back and forth. Hardly ever discover.

Events? Been to two, would like to go to one in NJ (been trying to catch the beer and burger event for months!), but prefer to meet people while caching in their natural habitat.

    Thore

    * Tiny often empty Park: Somerset NJ; SELBSTTHERAPIE; Lamington Ledges to name but a few.

May I suggest to add two more categories?

Icon cachers - If you collect coin icons in your profile and go out of your way to 'discover' them in a cahe or an event

Armchair Cachers (restricted class) - If you enjoy caching from home Phew luckily I erased that one ;-) ... just kidding, no offense

  14.

I always say a bad day of geocaching is better than a good day of getting your eyes poked out with a hot fire iron.

Aahhh. The simple truths of the Universe, off-handedly unveiled... ;-)

    Defining Moments:

    - putting my hand into a tree to pull aside a catskin cover of a cache (named after said cat), only to find that it was a living racoon. Found the cache in a log nearby after my heart started beating again.

    - laying in the air, horizontal, heels at eye-level about .04 secs before hitting the ground due to improper footwear.

    - Finding my first cache hanging from a treebranch on a thread after searching the forest ground underneath it for 20 mins. Found it when cursing and looking heavenward for help... Well...

    - Finding my first lamppost cache (not a whole lot around where I come from...)

    - My encounter with the Chester Police after retrieiving a cache ona tree ina swampy area, having parked in a pullout by a side road in NJ, with a Texas license plate. Trying to explain the map printout with specific points being marked (a couple in the nearby town) laying open in the passenger seat.

    - visiting 'Lamington Ledges' about 8 times to find stage one... and then stage 2 three times...

and of course: Finding my first ever cache. The excitement of finding the cache and the satisfaction of signing the log.

The list could go on for miles (sorry kilometers, need to be metric ;-) )

    Thore

  15. Thanks for sharing that Thore! I figured it was some disgruntled cacher over there. It sounded like an isolated case. I'm sure if it wasn't TPTB may have done something about it.

Anyhow, I hope to get over to Germany someday. My oldest son speaks German fairly well but I may take you up on your offer! I'm looking for ward to that first round! :P

    Trailgators: You are on!

    Thore

  16. I am sure HaLiJuSaPa hit the nail on the head. This chache was placed as a 'clever counterstrike' to MOC by someONE very frustrated in Germany. KitFox delivered another proof with the link.

I have read some discussions around MOC in the german speaking forum here, as well as in german forum and found that there is a very small (but very vocal and impolite) minority with that opinion.

The point I take exception to (again) in the oversimplification by some. I consider myself 'the average german geocacher' and I (as about 100k others here) play the game the same way you all do. Fair.

I won't go into the 'armchair logs' as that has been discussed at great length elsewhere and found to be a Austrian, German, Californian phenomenon.

So, please do NOT judge the german geocachers as a group based on an isolated few that are shunned even within their peers here.

As for deleting the posts: Stupid beyond belief. These (individual) cachers totally disqualify themselves and directly go to my personal 'ignore list'. (-Deleted a few misplaced comments here-) I also don't believe the cache status will be changed.

An offer to everyone travelling to Germany (or german speaking regions): If you need help translating or just general help/tips: Send me an email and I will gladly do what I can. Should you even be in my area: The first round is on me.

    Thore
