  1. Oziexplorer is a great program. I use it primarily for working with topo maps (drg's) which are available for free for many states including Utah. Go here for a clickable map for downloading USGS 24k quads for Utah. These will import and calibrate automatically in Ozi.

    Wow,

Thanks for the tip ;) , I will be busy downloading maps.

  2. When I try this I get an error  that says "program not found"

This is what my program says :

    ExpertGPS=C:\program files\ExpertGPS\ExpertGPS.exe;%gpx

    What does yours say?

Cool! This is what worked for me:

    ExpertGPS=D:\Maps\ExpertGPS\ExpertGPS.exe;"%gpx"

Looks like the quotes make the difference.

    Hey,

Thanks  Adding the quotes made it work for me.

    Sure is a cool program

  3. Go to Tools=>Options=>Advanced and take a look at the "Run program" box (click on help for more information)

    Clyde,

What an AWESOME feature. Just tried it with ExpertGPS and it works like a dream. Is there a way to send more than one (let's say three) without filtering/exporting or is the right click trick only good for one at a time?

  4. You can do the same thing easier with USAPhotomaps, as long as you have an internet connection. It imports the .gpx file, and displays the caches on topo maps or aerial photos, your choice, switchable the the press of a key, and completely zoomable. No need for all the extra work. It only works for the USA, though, but the last I heard Utah was still in the Union. B)

We obiously are not talking about the same thing.

I have USAPhoto Maps. It is a great program for looking at color aerial photos of urban areas. It will not take my gpx file with all 3200 of the caches in Utah. The import file size is limited to 1mb, my gpx file is 16mb. Even if it did, if I double clicked on a cache in GSAK, will USAPhoto Maps open up and show me the location of the cache? I don't think so.

On the other hand ExpertGps will take my file and show the location on either an aerial or topo, but only if I export a gpx file from GSAK and then open it in Expert GPS and then go and find the cache I am interested in.

With the process I described in the post above, if I see a cache in GSAK and want to know where in the Great State of Utah it is located, I simply double click on the cache and I see it on the map displayed in OziExplorer.

  5. I just wanted to report back on my OziExplorer adventure. I downloaded and installed Ozi and then opened TOPO and took screen shots of the level 2 maps of Utah. Then I merged all of the screen shots into one big .tiff image. I then loaded and calibrated the map image into Ozi. Then I set the double click option in GSAK to "show Ozi map".

Now when I am wondering where a cache is located, I doubleclick on it and the Ozi map comes up and shows me where the cache is. Pretty slick !!

Thanks for a great program and timely responses to questions.

  6.

As far as your Terraserver request, are you talking about something other that what you get when you right-click on the waypoint and select custom url/Microsoft Terra Server?  I think this is an out-of-the-box solution that Robert referenced.  (I may be recalling wrong, in which case we can tell you how to add it).

    Thanks for you input.

When I take the custom url to terraserver the terraserver window opens, but the cache location is not marked on the aerial photo. What I am wondering is it possible to have the location marked on the aerial photo? I certainly understand if what I am asking is not available, just wondering what the options are.

  7. I hope I am now wearing out my welcome here :D , but I am just getting into GSAK and realizing what a powerful tool it is.

I have 3200 caches in my database(all of Utah), when I drag the scroll button on the left of the screen to the bottom of the bar it moves to the bottom of the list. When I move up one tick it moves somewhere close to the middle of the list . Any body else notice this?

    Thanks again for your help.

  8. the language lawyer in me wonders if DaVIDe and Clyde are talking past each other.

DeVIDe, if you don't care WHICH program is doing the display of the terraserver images, would you be OK with GSAK building a linky link to terraserver-usa.com and popping them open in your web browser just like geocaching.com does for individual cache pages?  If it dosn't do that "out of the box" I suspect it's pretty easy to provide the URL templates to do that.

...and far wiser than trying to make GSAK a mapping program itself, IMO. :-)

Thanks for your insight. A link to terraserver.com which would pop up and show the cache location on an aerial photo would be fantastic. However even the link from GC.COM doesn't show the cache location on the aerial photo.

  9. I hate to use ExpertGPS and GSAK in the same sentence because GSAK does so much more.  The map capabilities of ExpertGPS are what I am missing in GSAK.  Any hope for something similiar in GSAK?

Not wanting to appear as greedy,  you have done a great job.  Just wondering.

I decided a while ago to leave dedicated mapping out of GSAK. It is a specialized area and there are more than enough programs already competing in this arena. GSAK already interfaces with many of these - especially well with OziExplorer.

Perhaps one day when I have put everything else into GSAK that is "on the list" (this won't be any day soon :D ) I will revisit this decision - but for now my time is better spent adding geocaching specific features to GSAK which aren't being done in the mapping programs.

Thanks for your reply, I will check out OziExplorer.

  10. What an amazing program. :D:D

Is there a way to have the location show on the aerial photo maps at Microsoft Terra Server? It shows on the other maps like Topo and Mapquest.

  11. I am wondering if there is anything in the works to link GSAK with a mapping program so we could click on a cache and have it show up on a map. I realize that is probably a big stretch, but just had to ask.

I presently use TOPO! and export my data base into TOPO! which works great. Hoping to maybe eliminate a few steps .

By the way, I love all of the features in GSAK and think you have done a superb job in putting together an awesome tool for cachers.

  12. I was just starting to search and see if someone had suggested this option.

I think it would be a very nice capability to add an order by option to the query by either Last Found, Date Placed, Name, Placed By, Type (Multi, event, single, ...), etc...  I want to be able to find brand new caches near my house or caches near my house that have not been found in a long time.

It would also be nice to allow a keyword search from your home location.  Instead of having to enter my home coordinates every time, I would like for the Poket Query generator to be able to auto poplate my home coordinates and also allow me to enter a keyword.  I was told that there was a cache at a certain location near my house, but I could not easily find it with the query capabilities available.  If I was able to genrate a query from my home location and keyword, I would have been able to easily find it.

GSAK will do all of these things

  13. If I create a query and ask for caches updated in the last seven days, does this include new caches as well? Or do I have to set another query for new caches?

    Thanks and happy new year

  14. We have had several of our caches found by non cachers who have joined and thanked us for our effort. The caches found by these non cachers were not urban caches and were quite well hidden, but they were placed in interesting and well travelled scenic locations. I see nothing wrong with the idea.
