  1. What I want to do is use a Garmin c330 to navigate between caches. I have found a 330 for the right price. I believe I could load them in as 500 waypoints. I’m guessing I would be able to do this but would appreciate some input from anyone that does this. I have had some experience with hand held units but none with automotive units. My other question is how are the maps upgraded. Does this work the same way as my 60CSX? I have auto-routing with several of my handheld units but want to try something new.

    Thanks in advance

Waiting to see answers to your question as my friend has a C330 & a Garmin etrex legend & wants to do the same.

For me I have a 60 CSX & bought the City Navigator North American V8 & loaded it along with US TOPO, works great to get me to the area & than find the cache.

  2. :cry::cry::cry::cry:

Thanks to all for your responses.

I fixed this problem by the following;:

1.Go to Control Panel, System, Hardware,Device Manager.

    2.Turn on the GPS.

3.There will come up in Device Manager a diamond marked as Garmin Devices. (If you do not turn on the GPS it will not show....that is where I was having the problem finding the problem)

4.If it is not working properly, there will be a yellow error besides it.

5.Right click it & remove it.

    6.It will reinstall itself.

The unit should now work properly, mine does now.

    Thanks....Ernie Fearon

  3. I have a new Garmin 60CSX, it works really well but I do have a question about downloading some of the data acquired in it to my Laptop.

Here is some data on the computer, software & the Garmin 60CSX.

Computer is a Dell running Home XP

    512 Meg Ram

30 Gig HD with 2 Gig spare.

MapSource, just bought & unlocked V8, Version 6.10.2

    GPS Unit is a Garmin 60CSX e/w a

64 Meg Micro SD Card & loaded with

partial Mapsource v8 & US Topo. (Still have some storage space left on the microSD card.)

    Here is my problem

    1. I have tracks, routes & waypoints to download.

    2. In order to download I hook up to the Laptop with the USB connector, directly thru the Laptop USB port (not a hub)

    3. I than turn on the Unit, I hear a click in the Laptop indicating it knows it is connected.

    4. I than go to the 60 CSX to Menu, Menu, Setup, Interface…at this point I see Garmin highlighted. However if I push enter nothing happens but if I navigate to USB Mass Storage & push enter it shows a connection to the unit & brings up a box on the Laptop showing a removable drive, in my case “E”.

    5. Now I see GPX files in that “e” drive that if I open shows my tracks on MapSource CN.

    6. However if I set the 60CSX to mass storage in Interface mode, than go to MapSource, Transfer, Receive from device, show “find device”, it shows the device as a removable device BUT it shows only the maps as the available box in “what to receive”, the other boxes (waypoints, routes & tracks) are gray & locked i.e. unable to check them.

    7. Also the test that Garmin indicates in the manual to see if the GPS is properly interfacing with the Laptop does not work i.e. going to “utilities, get unit ID” what I get doing this is a dialog box that shows the boxes as gray & when you push “find device” it gives a message as “no devices were found. Please make sure your device is connected to the computer and turned on, then try again. You may need to set the interface option on your GPS to ‘Garmin or ‘Host’. (There is no ‘Host’ box here)

So is my unit working correctly? I do not think so as it is not working as per the manual or in the way that the software suggests.

Any comments or help would be greatly appreciated, I can work the unit in this way but it seems to be a bit awkward as compared to the way I think it should work.

(I tried to resolve with Garmin Support, they diagnosed it as probably needing new USB Drivers that they e-mailed to me, I installed it but it acts same way.)

(When I bring up MapSource & click on help & click on about Mapsource & click on USB Driver Version it gives me “USB Driver Version: No USB Drivers Installed” as I indicated above I installed the USB drivers that were e-mailed to me.)

Thanks…sorry for the long post but I wanted to accurately describe the problem.

Looking at buying a Micro SD for my 60CSX, Buy.com looks like good prices, I want to load at least part of V8 Navigator & US TOPO, anyone do that & if so what size did you chose?

I bought this 1 GB Kingston card and City Navigator North America 8 NT. I found the 1 GB card to be overkill for my needs, as it would hold the whole USA with room for some TOPO maps and POIs left over. I didn't need the whole US on one card, because I rarely leave Pennsylvania, let alone the eastern half of the US. I put the 1 GB card into my PDA and now have a 512 MB card in my 60CSx. I still have street maps loaded from Maine down to North Carolina and Kentucky, and the topo maps for most of that area as well, with room for POIs left over.

The key to this is making sure you get the NT version of City Navigator, as the maps contain the same data as the non-NT version but are compressed better, and therefore require less storage space.

A 1 GB card should be plenty if you're running CityNav 8 NT with Topo maps. My 1 GB card was $30 when I bought it, looks like it's $33 now. A 512 MB card is going for $15 at the site I linked above, and is probably more than enough unless you do frequent travel across many states. You can always take 5 or 10 minutes to reload the card if you're going to travel, it's not a big deal to do that.

  5. Thanks Barrikady, for the info on the screen protector, appreciate that, exactly the info I wanted.....Ernie

I am thinking probably one 1Gig as it will load eastern US & maybe leave some storage for the US TOPO or maybe should think about 2Gig.

Also has anyone put a protector like a peel on/off plastic on the display, I would think that it may get scratched eventually, I see another thread on a case at Amazon with see-thru plastic, the only thing is I had a cell phone with one of these & the plastic scratched the display.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks....Ernie

I have a 60Cx. I purchased a 1gb Micro SD for the device and I loaded CN8, Topo and 24K Nat Parks Topo. It all works well, but be advised, the maps load slower with the 1 GB Micro SD card pretty much filled up.

I also have a clear plastic protector on the display. I bought "screen guards," by Micro writeguards. Part # TSC930CQ (google it). A pack of 12 guards was about $8 at Fry's. The guards are larger than the 60Cx display, and you have to cut the guard to size. The guards are made for iPaq PDA's

  6. Something to keep in mind. From the Garmin Website:

    Q. What is the largest size microSD card that I can use in my X-series GPS unit?

    A. At this time, 1 GB cards are the largest microSD cards that can be used for X-series products.

Thanks for the reply, I also see that this Canadian site has this added in, so now I begin to wonder what is right, maybe best idea is a 2-1 Gig cards but I hate to have to swap them.

Canadian site with this text in the 60CSX info they are selling.

    http://www.gpscentral.ca/products/garmin/60csx.htm

"microSD card slot allows for storage of optional MapSource detail (64 MB microSD included) [NB (From Garmin Tech Support): Any size, any brand of microSD card can be used.]"

  7. I have basically the same question.

I just purchased a 60csx and want to purchase software for it. I want to use the reciever for the road, on the trail and with my kayak. I was thinking of purchasing a 2 Gig microSD card that will fit all of the software listed below on the unit. But I too, don't know whether it's possible.

    US Inland Lakes

    US TOPO East

US TOPO 24K national parks east

    Blue Chart America

    US Recreational Lakes

I'm pretty sure that City Navigator NT v.8 is about 900 mgs. If you have a 2 gig microSD card, which I also understand will work inthe 60csx, you have about 1.1 gigs of space left for other programs. However, I've also heard that there may be a question about how much space you can use.

Hopefully, we will get some good answers to our questions.

    Hi kb1exp

I did get the Navigator v8 & US TOPO with the unit , I only loaded Florida in from the Navigator as I already have a Garmin 2620 Auto GPS, the great thing about Navigator is you can load as much or little as you want depending on the capacity of your card and where you want to go, most of Florida was 56Meg and I think the TOPO is not very storage intensive, I also want to get and load the Canada TOPO when I go back up north.

I think a lot of the 2610 users just use a 1 Gig card to load 1/2 US or use 2Gig to load all North America.

Hope we get lots of ideas on the best options.

  9. Nope. What memory is hardwired into the unit is for waypoints and the basemap and that's it. I'm not sure anyone outside of Garmin really even knows how much of it there is. My guess is ~8megs, judging from the map memory of it's predecessor, the 60CS. So you're not losing much...

Thanks for the reply, guess I have to get a bigger Micro SD Card.
