  1. Depends upon what you want out of your GPS & price you wish to pay. If I was starting out again, knowing what I know now I would get a Garmin 2720 (refurbished) or a refurbished 2610. These are the earlier Garmin models prior to Garmin trying to be everything to everyone especially the folks who never read anything on GPS units & want to just plug in the unit & go. These units can do multi waypoint routing and desktop routing. They are reasonably priced at $370 for the 2720 & much cheaper for the refurbished 2610. When we pull our 37 foot Fifth Wheel we put in the Diesel stops, the Campgrounds, the restaurant stops, etc, etc. We do all this on the Computer, check on Google Earth for any uncertainties, google the campgrounds and once satisfied with the complete route save it, name it & download it to the unit & you are all set....takes out most of the uncertainties that you might encounter. BTW we (sometimes) also use Microsoft Streets & Trips to verify the route if in doubt.
  2. Also Canada TOPO is routable, I have US TOPO & found I had to buy CN North America in the US to route to area.
  3. Where? I don't see it anywhere on "myGamin"? I bought it from Amizon on Aug. 2nd and registered it on mygramin on the 3rd. Do you have to buy it from gramin to get the free update? Note that not all Garmin car navigators qualify for the free upgrade. The following models are excluded from the offer: StreetPilot i2, i3, i5, c320, c330, c530, 2730, Quest 2, iQue 3000 - M3. Most of these models have been discontinued. How come the C330 is on both lists?? Says that it is eligible than on bottom excluded?
  4. Never bought here but at GPS Discount I see the same unit is $359 - $50 Rebate, so price is $309 & shipping & insurance adds 0n $6.00. But if you live in most states there is no sales tax with GPS Discount, see here; "REI is required to charge all applicable state and local sales tax on orders shipped to states where we have a physical presence, which includes distribution centers, operating stores and/or new stores under construction." Bottom line I think GPS Discount will be cheaper (they are in Oklahoma only.)
  5. Have had mine since 2006 11 15, no problems at all!
  6. I like the hook on the back but I don't see any hole in the rear of the case to attach the Belt Clip and Button see Garmin Part #: 010-10380-00 See also http://www.gpsdiscount.com/products/index.html?a=484 for this accessory.
  7. Thanks, I will do that, they are kinda large like total one Meg, hope thats ok, I will send a couple in different formats like I sent my buddy.....Ernie
  8. Thanks guys, I will try that, possibly the updates in mapsource is the answer, I did uncheck Maps leaving only waypoints & tracks to download.
  9. I have a 60CSX with Garmin CN v8, US TOPO & Canada TOPO v2 installed on my Laptop, I have portions of CN v8 & Canada TOPO v2 presently on my 60CSX. Here is a problem I have ran into; My ATV buddy has Canada TOPO v2 installed on his computer, (he has not bought his GPS unit yet.) When I try to send a copy of my tracks & waypoints (using Canada TOPO) from my GPS to his computer over the internet his computer says that the Mapsource is a different version (it is really the same version of Canada TOPO v2) Yesterday I tried to download from my 60CSX to his computer at his residence & it says it can not download the tracks, waypoints, etc. We did go to the Garmin site and downloaded the USB drivers to his computer, it than recognized my unit but still would not download the info from my GPS. Any one else run into this problem? I am wondering if having the cn v8 of MapSource on my computer & not on his would cause this? Maybe downloading the USB drivers that came with my 60 CSX to his computer would cure the problem? Or maybe I should use a different format to send the info via the internet? (This still would not answer why his computer would not accept my GPS info.) Any help would be welcome, thanks.....Ernie
  10. I use this one, not perfect but adequate & better than none. http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Protective-Ca...p;s=electronics
  11. I have the non-NT v8 on my 60CSX, works great, I went non-NT as I also wanted to load it (with my second unlock code) to my 2620, could not do that with NT.
  12. For what it's worth.... In my area; Eastern Canada, the latest version v8 does seem to be quite up to date, new subdivisions are on (built three years ago) however no names on the streets but my Streets & Trips (2007) is quite out of date in comparison. I did note in Florida where we stay the winter that the subdivision extension in our park was not on either Mapsource or S&T's. Thanks Neo! That is a reasonable expectation. Also, I found out that I wasn't zooming in enough for some neighborhoods -- not all, but enough to make the problem not nearly as bad as before. I should have tested more. Thanks again, Clair
  13. Is city navigator like ms streats and trips? or better? I have both, CN on my 60CSX & my 2620, S&T's on my computer. IMHO Streets & Trips has a much better readable format, wish that CN looked like that. This is not to say that CN is not usable, it is and quite accurate BUT S&T's just looks great & maybe because I have always used it to plan routes & look up places, I just love it. Oh, on edit--S&T's is not locked either, you can use it on another computer...just make sure it meets the copy-write parameters. Sometimes Costco has a good buy on it, I bought my 2006 version last year for $36 (I think) with a rebate of $16...around $20 total...quite a bargain. I have the 2007 Version now which is on a DVD, it is about one Gig size...hope this helps. A map is more handy than a compass. You can ge the Venture Cx and have some money left for topo or city navigator. If you have a limited budget that's the way to split the decision. If you have enough funds to cover either GPS...well back to pondering the Compass or Not... LOL Thanks I dont have unlimited funds i wish i did but my wife would kill me. what i used with my magellan sportrak color was MS Streets and trips for route planning and a topo to cut and load maps and upload it to ftp. alont with GSAK. Is city navigator like ms streats and trips? or better? and will any topo program work with the garmen as well?' Right now i'm thinking the Venture Cx and if i need a compass use my regular compass.
  14. I went thru same choice, bought City Navigator as I had a Street Pilot 2620 & wanted to also update it, You get a second unlock code with Garmin. City Navigator NT will not work on the 26xx units. Garmin advised me on the choice plus the great people on the 26xx forums. Bigger files (two Gig) with City Navigator but cards are cheaper now so not a big issue on size. I can put eastern US & Canada onCity Navigator plus the US TOPO on my one Gig Micro Card. Card was $27 at Fry's. Works good on both units. ........Ernie
  15. Hi Doug! Great to hear from you! Yes, still using your program, works just great although we sold the Fifth Wheel still have the Diesel Truck. Thanks again for your work on the mileage program.
  16. For clarity, the last poster was correct in that the basemap will not get deleted...but when he says SD he meant SD card which the plain legend does not have so it does not apply here. Right, I think there actually isn't any way to erase or overwrite the basemap on the Legend. I was talking about the factory preloaded data in the 8MB. Now the Marine POI recovery thing seems to have vanished from the Garmin site. I do have a Garmin_Marine.exe in my old "Garmin Legend" download folder. If I run that it wants to install "Marine POI Database Recovery", so I wasn't dreaming about that one either - just that I can't find it on the Garmin site any more. canuck travellers, let me know if you want to have a copy of that installer just in case. Jan Thanks everyone for the response, I will try the download & may take JanniCash up on your offer. .....Ernie
  17. Never had a 60Cs but the 60CSX sure works great, picks up a lot more satellites inside than my Street Pilot 2620 ever did inside! .....Ernie
  18. I have the 60CSX mounted on my bicycle & it works perfect, I use an "Invisible Shield" on the display so am not worried about scratching it. I highly recommend the bike mount! .....Ernie
  19. Hi everyone! Just a quick question for you folks with the eTrex Legend. My friend has one & I tried to give him a hand in loading a map from US TOPO, after selecting the map segment & attempting to load this into his GPS it gave me a warning that said something like "Warning all Garmin preloaded data will be erased, do you want to continue?" I did not continue as I was worried that maybe the base map might be erased from the unit, leaving us in a real predicament. If only the waypoints that Garmin had loaded are removed that will be ok, but I don't know if removing or over writing the base map would be a good idea. Can anyone tell me or advise what will happen if I do load a TOPO segment into this Garmin eTrex Legend? Really appreciate any help from you guys & girls. ....Ernie
  20. You may want to look at this response in the 26xx forum, I think it pretty well explains what will work in the 60CSX & the 26xx series, however I don't know about the 27xx series, it worked ok for my 2620 & my 60CSX. BTW having City Navigator v8 & US TOPO on my 60CSX is perfect as I can set the route trip & the final cache location all from it. Here is the response in the 26xx forum; http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.a...archTerms=,2620 Good luck.....Ernie
  21. Yeah, I find it small & containing but have an IOMEGA 250 Gig External HD to transfer my bloat to. However in 2003 when I purchased my Inspiron 5100 Dell, a 30 Gig was big but so was a 1.7 GB IBM Aptivia bought in 1995 or a 40 Meg HD PC that I bought in 1986 or a or a Vic 20 with an audio tape drive of 12 Kbs bought in 1983...such is the great advances of technology!
  22. Thanks Oz, did it works great, it does fatten up the smaller HD in my 30 Gig Dell Laptop but is well worth it. Thanks to all for answering! ....Ernie
  23. I know I saw a way to use US TOPO program without placing the CD containing the area (Eastern US, etc.) in the disk drive each time, however I can't seem to find that thread. I think the answer was to copy the CD to the hard drive & have the computer look to the directory for the data. Can anyone help me in getting the computer to look at the directory that I copied the CD into. Or am I wrong in this assumption that it can be done? Thanks for any help. .....Ernie
  24. Those don't use unlock codes. City Select and City Navigator do. Exactly, I am a Canadian in Florida, have US TOPO & there are NO UNLOCK codes .......as there are none for the Canadian TOPO. However the US one leaves a lot to be desired, would not recommend buying this.
