  1. Just got my Kenwood th-d7a back, had the G upgrade done.

NOW I get to buy the SMA24 for it...

I still wanna know that long story about Kenwood, DW! Private mail is okay with me, but others may be interested too.

Maybe a new topic about Service Centers and Ham's experiences with them?

    Todd-K7PKT

R and L electronics in Ohio had the best price by about $3 on that antenna when I bought it a couple months ago.

  2. Guess I'm gonna hafta give the ol' SMA-24 a try. I resisted getting the AA battery pack for my VX-5R because of the reduced output, but based on your report on the performance of the BNC-24, Mike, I may have to rethink that.<BR><BR>I still intend to get a second L-Ion battery. It's a matter of principle for me to have two main batteries so one can be charged while the other's in use.<BR><BR>-----<BR>~ Boyd<BR>KG4YQS<BR><BR>"Never ask a man where he's from. If he's from Texas, he'll tell ya soon enough. If he ain't, don't embarrass him."

    I have an SMA24 for my VX5R.

I don't think I'll ever put the stock antenna back on, unless it's to sell the radio.

edit: sorry, didn't mean to revive a year-old thread. :o

  3. Will garmin version 3.20 topo maps load onto the new 60cs?

it should. the version number shown is for the Mapsource software, not the map data. On Garmin's site, you can update the Mapsouce software to 5.4 (I think that's the current version) and if you run the Topo maps, there's also a Topo specific update.

  4. this might be a question better suited to a ham board, but I'm logged on here right now so here goes.

I'm interested in putting together a gprs system for the car (and possibly mobile) but with no identifiable digipeters in the area (Portland Maine) I'm pretty much wasting my time, right?

  5. you're going to laugh, but the deal is that we had been reading books about animals. So they were afraid of bears and cheetahs that were hiding behind trees in northern Ohio. Oh, and the aligators.

We've since moved to Maine and I've pretty much convinced them that bears don't live this close to the city.

  6. I tried caching about 2 years ago with my kids who were about 2 and 4 at the time. They got freaked out by the trees, shadows, etc. Had zero success and it was a miserable experience as they did nothing but whine and cry.

Decided to try again this past week. We've logged our first two finds on our first two trips and this is with their new little brother in tow - but he was riding in the backpack.

I went with another stay-at-home dad on one of them, so in all, we had 5 kids, ranging in ages from 23 months to 6 years. Both dads had kids on their backs, and the other 3 kids, ages 3, 4 and 6 all walked 2.9 miles with some bushwhacking involved. There was only about 5 minutes of whining and crying and that was when the 3 year old got hit in the face with a treebranch.

    We're hooked.

  7. I've tried com ports 1 and 2

I've tried setting the speed at 9600

I've gotten this adapter to work with one other item (Yaesu VX5) but have had problems with other devices.

I might just pick up another one and give it a shot.

We just had our first successful cache hunt and the kids are very excited to do more.

That way, a mobile set-up in the car would not require separate power plugs for the GPSr and for the laptop. Just get the laptop plugged in to your cig lighter and then the GPSr feeds off of that via USB.

My Vista/laptop mobile set-up now requires two power plugs - and luckily my Grand Cherokee has two. But it's a hassle with all the wires.

Maybe there is such a USB cord? Anybody?

I'm sure it can be done. A powered USB hub can provide (going off memory here) 500mA @ 5V (*might be 3V *)

Yep... too bad I left it in the garage that day.
