  1. Thanks for the words if wisdom. I'm very excited to try this. I'm not sure if I will shoot for Chile right off the bat. Maybe I could start with a goal of visiting all the great lakes. If my object is a little zip lock back with a pebble in it, would it be okay to ask that other geocachers add pebbles to bag from the beaches the bug visits before they send it on its way? I like the pebble idea! I wonder if a ziplock will be durable enough? I don't know what else to use, but I very much like the idea! Well, I've ordered 4 travel bug dog tags and two cute firefly tag things. I think I will do that beach/great lake thing with the pebbles. The TB I found a few days ago had some beads in a very durable zip lock baggy... I wonder if I can find something like it at a local craft store. I think on another one, the object would be bird shaped and its goal will be to simply 'Fly South.' It will be interesting to see how far south it gets before it vanishes. Then I might do two wild chinchilla ones racing to get to the chinchilla reserve in Chile. Is there a thread somewhere here about what materials are best when making your own object to attach to the dog tag? Do laminated things fare well? I should probably look around. The problem I might have at this point is that I'm soooo new at this. I really am pretty bad at finding caches. Hopefully I will be able to find caches to put my TB in.

  3. Welcome to the game! In my experience? Most. Sure. That's perfectly fine. You can do pretty much anything you want. Thanks! I love your motto about Feral Tupperware.
  4. Hi there. I am very new to geocaching. Not sure if this belongs here or in Newby section. I am fascinated by Travel Bugs. What percentage of the bugs you release get lost? How often do they actually reach their goals or destinations? Would it be okay to release three Travel Bugs with the exact same goal at the same time? It would increase the chances of meeting the goal AND it would be interesting to compare their journeys. They would all be chinchilla related objects trying to get as close as possible to Las Chinchillas National Reserve in the country of Chile. Thanks, Lulilac
  5. In the few I've discovered up to now, I'm caught on that caches in the woods are often hidden under a cairn of sticks and bark. I'm really enjoying the steep learning curve.
  6. you're on the right track LuLilac, keep on asking questions - then try to answer them while you're out searching...what else would you call a beacon? if that was a clue, focus on the meaning - perhaps in England, they might call a beacon a ____...where would one of those be where you were?... sitting a spell helps you clear your mind and focus on your surroundings when caching, allowing your geo-sense to kick in... allow yourself the freedom to explore and to make mistakes, as your smart phone only has the coordinates to get you within 30 feet of the cache...the adventure is in seeking and the joy is in the find...good luck... Hee hee. Do you mean a belisha beacon? I don't think there's a traffic light there. There might be. I will check it out.
  7. Thank you everyone! It makes sense that Beacon would be referring to likely hiding places or things that are referred to by clues in the description and logs. I did read the logs a fair way back and it appears the cache used to be hidden right behind the bench, but it has been relocated. I think its in the bushes behind the bench, but I haven't done an exhaustive search. Its a very busy place with traffic and muggles (?) in close range. I know I will find it some day. Thanks. Lots of fun!
  8. I'm going a little crazy trying to find a nearby cache. It is colored green so it is meant to be for new people. On the log, someone says "checked a couple of beacons before the cache was in hand." Does this mean the cache has a becaon inside? Or are they referring to something outside the cache? Is this a GPS unit thing? I'm just using my (not always so)smart phone. This is my nemesis: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cdpf.aspx?guid=d0567f5c-76ee-45b7-b3c9-501660dc76b4&lc=10 Takk, Lulilac
