  1. I know there are rocks everywhere but being from Arizona... What is the fascination that some cachers have with the proverbial Needle in a Haystack concept of hiding caches? Some of them are downright treacherous, on the side of a slope, near cactus or snakes! I don't mind a certain degree of difficulty but isn't/ shouldn't the idea be: Not impossible to find just not obvious or visible to someone that is not looking for it? Almost always I can look around (within a few feet) and think "This spot would be a much more clever placement for a Geocache". Not to mention I'm seldom alone; how inconspicuous can people look check under rocks in a public desert park?

I'm just saying, I love this game but who has time to spend 20, 30 + minutes looking for one cache?

I can't imagine I'm the only one that feels this way. I vote for a little more thought and planning.

  2. I have just gotten myself a Garmin Vista H GPS and it is suppose to be downloadable. I have tried several times and

I can't get it to work right. Can anyone tell me step by step how to set it up and do it? I would love to go paperless with my caching.

    Thanks karverr

    1. Connect your GPS to your computer with the usb cord.

    2. For individual caches, click on the "send to GPS" tab/box. A box will pop up, it's smaller and sometimes it hides behind other pages. move or minimize stuff.

    3. If you haven't already, you'll need to download Garmin Communicator. Follow the prompts.

    4. Come back to the "Send to GPS" box and "Accept" the application. - blue field near the top of the box.

It will search to find devices.

    5. When it "finds" your devise select "save"

You'll have to do this for each individual GC you download to your GPS.

I know there is a way to save and send more all at one time utilizing MapSource. Hopefully someone else can walk you through that one. Hope this helps. Happy Caching!

  3. If I start the hunt and it ends in me not finding the cache - I log a DNF - each and every time.

DNF logs are important. It lets the cache owner know there might potential be a problem with the cache and it lets other cachers know that they better be prepared to spend a little more time. Details in the text of the log help everybody put the DNF in context.

Thank you! In my opinion this is the most correct answer. If you don't want to post a DNF at least post a Note: "not quite ready to call this one a DNF, will try again..."

  4. I would be very interested in hearing from forum members about what they like about Geocaching and what got them started in the sport. Is it about finding stuff, using technology, being outdoors, or something else?

I got started in Geocaching because I stumbled across a geocahe by accident whilst out walking. I already had the GPS for hill-walking navigation and I am now hooked on Geocahing as a sport. The appeal for me is the combination of using technology , being outdoors and walking and , of course finding stuff.

Wow, Great stuff. All of the Above. It's quite literally all over the World! We've be fortunate to do a little traveling and have been able to find at least one cache in every country! Italy, Greece, Turkey,France, Switzerland, Austria,Germany. It gets you to places you would likely never find on your own and learn something unique about that area. I know a lot of cachers build up their numbers on the quicky stash and grabs but I very much prefer the hiking trails and getting out and about. I have several that I've hidden too and really appreciate when people put a little thought and effort in the hides.

    Geocoins: that's another tread...[

  5. I just had my first find today and it was a blast! My question is, I sent the cache information to my GPS, and it worked great, but I can't see the notes/hints on my system. I see the notes section, but all I see is the title of the cache. Does anyone have this GPS that may be able to help? Does it only store the title or is there something I am missing?

    Thanks!

    Mine is a 60csx.

"Assuming" you've downloaded cache info/coords via usb? I've found that most of the alloted spaces in the note section for a specific cache is already usurped with the cache name and owner. I've taken to deleting some of the "unnecessary" wording, abbreviating and adding info I need... What I took/left, DNF, etc... Hope that's what you're looking for.

  6. I have tried doing a search for the problem but the search engine won't allow the words used. My Vista HCx outer shell is starting to come off or unglued. What is the best way to fix this since this will affect the waterproof rating. I have had the unit for about 2 years. Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks

I had the same problem with my Garmin eTrex Legend. I used strips of double-sided, fabric-mesh carpet tape. Cut it to size so you don't have excess tape sticking out from underneath. It seems to hold well.

Wow, Thanks. I'm having the same problem but was looking for an answer to something else. BonuS!! :P
