  1. Way to go Gaiter Man! I'm almost half way to where you are. does that make any sense? Ha ha ha Gary
  2. I need to upgrade both my GPS AND my Palm. I have been waiting on this unit to hit the streets and then read some reviews on it before making up my mind. http://www.garmin.com/products/iQue3600/ Gary
  3. quote:Originally posted by RobAGD:Yea a lot of people have been on a tear of late. Good weather will do that I am never going to make my year goal but not being able to cache for almost a total of 5 months will do that. I just had to add something here. The rain was driving me crazy. I would wait and wait for a dry weekend, but it never showed. I finally said heck with it and on just a couple of days I went caching dressed in a full rainsuit! I even took an umbrella with me so that I could try to sign logs and keep them dry. Didn't really work out too well. I got some really strange looks as I got out of my car dress to the hilt in yellow, but I made up my mind to cache, and by cracky I did it! Wet or not, had a blast! Getting your feet wet while it's raining has a whole lot less meaning then when it is dry and sunny out. Gary
  4. Thanks guys! I had not been reading these forums till just this week. Bigcall pointed me here after the insider went down. I thought my 200th had gone unnoticed....Hmmm, I just wasn't in the right place! Sort of like some caches that I try to find. ha ha ha Thanks again. Gary
  5. Great feeling, isn't it! I hope to be with you on some of your new adventures yet to come. Gary
  6. I have a total of 265 finds. Not all of them are within my "circle". I did some caches last year while visiting my cousin which is 100 miles away. Still, the local caches are starting to really get scattered around. I usually have to "plan" a day of caching. I try to pick an area that has 6-10 that I haven't done. It usually takes me between an hour and an hour and half to get to those locations. One day I had planned a whole day to catch up on various caches that I wanted to do. I started at 5am in the morning and didn't get home till 8pm that night! I put somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 miles on the car. I finished the day with 14 or 15 finds that where scattered all over the place. I loved the caching, but hated the driving between locations. I DO have some caches within 30 miles of me, but some are long hikes, some need a boat, and others are scattered around. I am trying to save the long hikes for the fall weather. Less ticks and cooler weather. Just to add,...I don't do this for the numbers, I do it because it's fun and is a great excuse to get out into woods. The numbers are just an added benefit that is fun to look at from time to time. Gary
  7. Guess I'll throw my 2 cents worth in, and after taxes, that ain't worth much!!! The insider site posted stats whether you chose to be included or not. So, why not include stats here. They will be on another menu item, so if you wish to look, go look,...if you don't, don't. As far as people going out and grabbing a bunch of 1/1 caches,....those same caches are available to everyone, so what's the problem with that?
  8. I use a fairly inexpensive model that has a fold up cover. I use it when I get out of the car to figure out which direction to go after doing a "go to" on the GPS. Then I will use it along the way when I'm not sure which path to take when I come to a Y in the trail. My older GPS doesn't always show the proper relation of my path on the map page, but the bearing direction is usually accurate. I then use it once I get to within .01 mile of the cache. My NEXT compass will be one that has a lanyard for hanging it around my neck and NO foldup cover. I catch myself opening and closing it way too often. I put it in my pocket, then take it out,...so on and so on. Gary
  9. Been there, done that, many many times!! I now have gotten in the habit of setting the GPS down and let it settle for at least 10 minutes. Sometimes even longer. I start searching for the cache, but when I come up empty handed, I'll then take another look at the GPS and see that it is pointing me in a different location. Sometimes I'll take the GPS to the new location and set it down again, or at times will just leave it set where it is and come back 5-10 minutes later and take another peek at it. One thing I have noticed. You are walking in the woods following your GPS towards a cache, when you get close to it and stop walking, there are times that the GPS has minimal coverage and thinks you are still walking. I know it's not easy, but patience is what you need at these times. Gary

    Signal Dropouts

Actually, the first time I heard/saw of the problem was at the get together on March 15th at Burke Lake Park. I think it was Da Rebel mentioned he lost ALL sats comming to the meeting. When he told me that, I turned on my GPS was only getting 3 birds, one of which was very, very weak. The rest of the day seemed to go OK with maybe some querks here and there, but I chalked it up to walking under tree cover. I did a couple of caches about a week ago in the rain. Everything seemed to be going OK and then the GPS lost signal. It came back. I had already found the cache, but I needed to find the car next. I followed more of my compass than I did the GPS. I was in sight of my car and the GPS told me that the car was in the opposite direction! I didn't have any tree cover at this time. I thought maybe it was low batteries. Got to the car and plugged it into 12v. It still told me that the car was off in another direction? The short answer to the post is, YES, I have seen dropouts and erroneous readings lately. Gary
