  1. a dremel tool with a fine ceramic cutting wheel would be about the only to get the old screen out. then you would need to get the proper chemical to weld the new one back in. alot of trouble, maybe consider new unit and experiment with this one unless you can convince magellan to repair this one. 2. try <menu>, <setup>, <coordinate>, <format>,<lat/long> then there should several formats come up one of which is dd mm.mmm. select that. this is the process on the 300 series magellans and id imagine the meridians are the same/similar. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  3. well, i dont have a waas enable reciever because in my area there is no waas coverage by either a grs or sat. however ive borrowed several waas enabled recievers from the gis lab and have found that enabling waas tends to leads to more power comsunption. check out this thread for a test we did just for the hell of it upon hearing a rumour. asides from that a study was done by some grad student at unb that showed enabling waas if there are no valid corrections can adversely affect the overall accuracy of your gps under certain circumstances. 4. well, i guess now isnt the time to buck the trend. point is he didnt find the cache, i dont think it is a not found either. to me a find is when you find the cahce or its remnant, a not found is when you look and cant find it and decide to give up for the time being, and a note covers just about everything else. this situation requires a note, he searched for the cache but didnt find it due to circumstances beyond his control, so you cant really call it a not found either. when you think about it whos he trying to kid? his gps and your gps have expected errors of up to 50 meters, therefore had this cache been in the wilderness he could have said he found 'the' tree where the cache is? delete his log! 5. 2d fix occurs when the unit is locked onto only 3 or less sats and as a result the unit is unable to compute elevation. 3d fix occurs when 4 or more sat are locked and the unit is able computes the elevation. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  6. well, i guess that we could take some solace in the fact that they are lazy. the 9 caches that they plundered only 1 could be considered tough, with a 3 difficulty rating. my best guess would be that they are infact kids and that being kids they will run out of caches in their immediate area and are too lazy to bike a distance of anymore than 6-8 miles. interestingly enough if you plot the cache locations on a map most are mear the highway 101 and that 2 of the caches are 25 miles away. this appears to be 2 clusters of plundered caches....posibly 2 groups of kids with too much time? 7. quote:Originally posted by HMF4:Now I feel really dumb. They are the same coordinates?? I set the etrex to match the map format as close as I could. The map is in DD MM SS.S The Etrex will do HDDD MM SS.S Is there another format that might match?? i dont have a garmin, but if i were to guess id say that dd mm ss.s is the same as hddd mm ss.s where the h would satnd for hemisphere instead of +/- for north/south/east/west. to alter the displayed cooridnates as you want it should only be to change the setup menu configuration, but a garmin owner will have to guide you through that process. 8. for what its worth, the 2 coordinates are the same, just in different formats. you must have hddd mm ss.s selected on the etrex. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  9. as for the inconsistancy of your unit, assuming you have the datum, and formats set correctly ive heard that if a unit is waas enable and it cannot acquire the signal from the waas sat that it can have an adverse effect on the accuracy of the unit. to test this, try disabling the waas whan you get similar behavior with you unit. with the ub=nit asking to be re-initialised, only heard of it happening if you do an 'all clear'. if you are accessing the waas signals i dont think that you can access the epe data. someone else who has a waas enabled unit should confirm this. finally, the three different 'w' would indicate the 'current status' of waas in the unit, as in not present, acquiring lock, and locked on. Krs, Kar & Na I ***-U-MEd that the external antenna was the reason my batteries were dying, and the unit was shutting down, all the while on external power. As soon as I put freshly charged batteries, all was well again. (I use mine for driving a LOT.) DustyJacket Not all those that wander are lost. But in my case... probably because the antenna/gps combo requires some extra power from the batteries and if the batteries are dead it cant run and the gps shuts down. the real test is, as someone mentioned, is to run the combo without batteries in the gps. if it works, the the adapter supplies enough power, if not the combo requires more power than the adapter can provide. 12. quote:Originally posted by phantom4099:If you have a good cable the meridian will run without batteries. When I first got my unit I was using an older 315 cable (black box) that did not deliver enough power. My meridian would drain the batteries if the backlight was on (I think the 315 did too, but not as bad). I called magellan about it and they sent me one of the newer (gray boxed) cables for the 315. I use to hear that there was problems with the black box (this was when the 330 was the king magallen handheld). But it would not suprise me if the color meridian, plus an anntana drew more power than what the adapter gave. Wyatt W. The probability of someone watching you is directly proportional to the stupidity of your actions. i have a 315/320 and a 'black' 12v cable and a 'grey' 12v/data cable and can run my gps without batteries with the backlight on high. but if i get a 330 form the lab it wont run with the backlight on 'high' using the 'black' cable but will run without the backlight. similar result with a meridian and sportrak. my best guess was that the waas capablities require extra computing power and thus draw extra current. never being one to too let something get the best of me, i decided to disable the waas, loo and behold disabling the waas enable dthe 'black' cable to run the waas enabled units just fine backlight and all. So I don't think you will see it in Canada but As you don't need a lic for the FRS freqs here and the radios work very well here, It is the choice for many cachers. I own a set and they are great but I would love to get a hold of a rino 110/120. Work Smarter, Not Harder! cant you buy the rino's at radio shack? 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  14. a large part of our 'menu' is sea food. local favorites include mussels, peri-wrinkles, and all sorts of fish. meat favorites would include seal, beef heart, and brawn. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'

Ok now, you went a little too far on that one. Poutine comes from Canada, don't be crediting Maine with something of the likes of poutine! Obviously you got it from some transplants who crossed the border... _Money doesn't grow on trees, but there is cache in the woods._ there ar 2 types of poutine. first is the 'amercianized' version that has only cheddar/mozzarella cheese, then there is the real stuff that has cheese curds. in any event i think it was orginally a french-european dish imported into quebec and only recently has spread to english canada. 17. well, im a hunter (deer, waterfowl and upland game birds), and i could care less about the color because gps is only a tool to get me home if i need it, infact most of the time it is off unless im guiding to a particular location. i would think that the color scheme, as it is for everything else, is simply marketing. to me there isnt much pratical use or penalty to any color scheme other than esthetics. and about the reflective tape, depending on the type, might that interfer with sat reception? 18. the way i look at it is you dont need permission to broadcast the coordinates but rather to place something on the land. that is why you wouldnt need permission to have a virtual but a traditional you would. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  19. well, being in the states both waas and mapping could be of use to you unlike in my area. however i dont think the gps prices drop as fast as pcs, i bought my mag 315 in 1998 when it first came out and paid $225cd, last year even though it was to be discontinued you still have to pay $200cd at canadian tire. 20. this link has the necessary insdier tech info on the 330 and meridians. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  21. ozi explorer and gps trackmaker also do these calculations. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  22. according to magellan tech support the meridian doesnt get the same quality of signal reception as the sportrak even though the antennae are identical spec wise. therere no concrete explaniations but only possibilities.... 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  23. i can live with a cache that has to be moved, maybe even as much as a mile or 2, im thinking about new subdivisions or changes made in the land use regulations could make the original placement inappropriate. this in my mind would be fair enough and should be left to the discretion of the cache owner, but to move across state/provincal borders simply to be able to maintain it or at a whim? id suggest archiving/adopted out and getting a new cache, the approval process cant be that difficult, can it? i guess the problem is that we are all on the honor system here and some of us are less honorable than others...and as erik said, the system can be abused as all systems...
