I haven't read them closely enough to figure out if they're the same notion or if they differ in any substantial way. Max Often wrong but seldom in doubt i didnt read that article yet but the maori charts were developed over the centuries by thancient culture. i doubt if knight had any new ideas rather refinements. 2. well for what its worth the only site that has any regional info pertinent to me is gc.com. i do check out another site for posts etc, but for my region the only place to get going is here. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'

  4. i dont know fo the book that brianmcm mentioned but to be correct adn give credit where credit is due, nearly all fish/game time calculators are based on maori charts that are derived from the moon phases. check out outdoorlife magazine for more info. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  5. pda and laptops are nice gadgets for realtime mapping but are not necessary, and are costly. to get started you need a gps only. power cables, data cables and all the other accessories come into play as you become a more advanced user of gps. if you are only using the gps for geocaching check out a package deal that has the data cable included and youll be ok for a while. with a data cable you coudl upload 100 cache waypoints in about 2 minutes. easygps is a good starting point until you figure out what other features you want. 6. if the sportrak is like the 300s the waypoints onboard wont be erased. what you could do is to download the onboard points to easygps and open up your new pocket query and merge the required data and then upload after deleting all the waypoints 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  7. no accessories are absoultely necessary. having said that the pc cable, carry cases, 12vdc power cables, gis mapping software, waypoint managers and rechargable batteries are all accessories that you are likely to accumulate over time if you use you gps any large amount and find indespensible. as to the order of importance i guess i priortize like this: 12vdc power cable for vehicle. also for safety of the gps i would reccomend that this accessory above all others be purchased. could also get pc/power cable combo, while more expensive it allows power and data transfer at the same time. vehicle mounts may also be necessary for in vehicle use, i made my own system for my vehicles and work fleets, not necessary but nice depending on the make of your car. case/screen protection. if you just paid good money for the gps it makes good sense to spend a few extra bucks to protect it. alot of people here make their own or use cell phone cases etc. dont really need to buy a factory case but a case of some sort is pretty essential. waypoint manager and pc cable. there are a number of good waypoint managers available as freeware such as easygps which can be used to interact with this site. using the pc cable you can then upload the caches directly to your gps which eliminates the risk of user error and the pain in the a$$ of doing it. if you are handy you can easily make this cable if you want to 'demo' it before buying one. depending on how much you use the gps, rechargable batteries will pay for themselves over time. gis mapping software and topo maps is a nice addition but not essential. programs such as oziexplorer(pay-for-use) and gpstrackmaker (freeware) can be very useful in route planning. as for uploading the maps to the gps only the manufacturers properity software does this currently. as for the accessories that come with the gps---that depends. some gps come with cases, cables or software or nothing. shop around and look for the best deal. if you shop you may get package deals, or if you call the manufacturer after purchase you may be able to get some freebies if you get the right service rep. btw, if you buy a new gps leave the plastic on the screen to protect it until you get a case. you can also get laptops for realtime mapping and a host of other accessories but these thing are mostly fluff for the guy who tinkers, like me!! 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!' What if I don't have a dremel. How much polishing needs to be done?? How long do you sit and rub the screen with polish? thanks Using http://www.opera.com/ the dremel tool is is just a bonus that i had. as for how long, depends on the scratches but the abrasive is in a paste like rubbing compound so simply rub with a lint free cloth (i use dvd/cd wipes) and reapply as needed. i use this on my gps, 2-way a/v remote etc. these compounds are for dvd/cd touch-ups and do a good job. as got how long, that depends on the scratches but i just give 5-10 minutes every now and then and it works to remove most of the wear and tear you get from normal use, as mentioned deeps gouges require a polishing tool---dremel and some patience but is possible. 10. id like to suggest that the admins have a thread to let us know of new countries. this thread should also be updated frequently (~1/month) just to let everyone know howmany caches are in each country. also this thread should be held to the top like the avatar thread. as someone else said just my 2 cents and refunds are available. 11. quote:Originally posted by Taxman003:Well, I had the old screen scramble that everyone's been talking about and my Legend was under warranty. I sent it off on June 19th to one of the two companies in Quebec and only got it back yesterday (a month and 10 days???). They had to send it to Garmin in the States and Garmin sent it back on July 10th. What took so long for it to get there and why so long to get it back? Anybody else have these problems with service in Canada? Also, they replaced my unit. I don't have the exact serial number right now but will update it later. They are relatively close together and it lead me to believe that they were produced at about the same time. Why shouldn't I think that I'll have the same problems? Finally, it the unit is replaced, shouldn't Garmin give you another year on the warranty. Mine is only good for the greater of 90 days and the balance of the first year (my case). What exactly is it that they are saying about their product? Even though you enter the wrong waypoint....you're still in the right spot! well i dont own a garmin but the service with the magellans in canada is similar. there is only one service depot in canada (bobs electronics in ontario, i think) and when i ask abour the turn around the service folks at makellan suggested if it was an issue to send it to them and the turn around would be less than 2 weeks shipping included barring unforseen circumstances. as for the warranty, you only get 1 year from orginal purchase but with some of the known wear issues you may be able to get service out of warranty if you deal with them sensibly. why would you expect a greater warrany, at least they are going to warranty their repair (ie minimum of 90 days)? 12. i have the same feature on my mag 315 and i use it regularly. while not a substute for a real compass ive found that it is very reliable and, unless weather/moon phases dont allow you to use it, ive never been forced to use my compass over it. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'

  14. this is a known issue. i think the solution is to either open the file fromthe web site and then save it, or change the saved file properties in the dialog box before clicking save. this has been discussed before, but the exact details of the solution evade me now. 15. quote:Originally posted by weswada:... d&j, the caches r under the min. 0.1 mile (528ft.) restriction imposed by Groundspeak. something i did not know existed until this happened. and whats the odds we would both hide our caches so close together?! thats how tight it is up there! yo! i gathered that(sarcasim), but is it 525' or 50'? one could be worked around but according to your description the other couldnt. btw, anyone else having problems with the url, gremlins etc? 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  16. from an engineering stand point this is very frustrating. in our urban area upwards of 60% of the control markers are missing/defaced/destroyed and unforunately dept gsl generally doesnt know. your experience isnt unusual. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'

  18. a question that hasnt been asked is what is the defination of a closed trail? here a trail being closed generally means that it isnt maintained and that you are on your own when it comes to insurance. does being closed mean that you cant access the trail unless you trespass/enter illegally or does it mean that the stair/walkways are under construction and you should not enter? if you can only access the trail via trespassing then i agree that you got the short end of the stick for being honest, but if you can still avail of the trail but it is much riskier then i think that the other cacher in question acted amorally but did nothing wrong and you still got shafted. in any event i think you got an interesting case to argue and in light of you description of the area and the event maybe, depending on how close the caches are, when the trail area is opened there should be 2 caches. ps how close are the 2 caches anyway? 20. has top be cut open due to the chem-weld process. could try a plexglass sealer of windshield repair kit though. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  21. this can be chaulked up to poor design. the only reason i can think that magellan went to this design instead of the chem-weld design of the 300s is cost cutting---if a 300 went in for service it had to be replaced but now pieces can be replaced. about the only way to cure this issue is for magellan, or an enterprising individual, to insert brass plugs into the screw holes for the case screw to bore into. 22. ive used: mapinfo ozi fugawi gpstm/gtmpro easy/expertgps gps utility among a host of others. by far ozi has proven to be the most complete all round gis package ive sampled. the only 2 weaknesses ive found in ozi is its failure to load waypoint files from this site and its inability to layer inlaid data. my suggestion would be if the software is only for geocaching go with expertgps if you really want mapping and other such features, if you have other plans in mind use easygps for geocaching and ozi for more advanced gis work. 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!' What a cruel thing to do to an animal that is doing what comes natural to it. That's where you start thinking vigilantism isn't such a bad idea. Cheers! TL i think you misunderstood---this a-hole wasnt exacting revenge, rather he did it for kicks! 'Get to the point---speak English!!!!'
  24. by my calculations a route made from the three points you listed is 3.63km, so check your conversion technique and input data for errors. as for using the utm, you will appear to get additional accuracy but since the practical accuracy of you gps is only about 15m anyway when coupled with the error of the placers gps you probably wont gain much anyway. people must remember that the gps system wasnt designed to find boxes out in the woods, rather for emergency purposes and in those parameters of use the 15-25m accuracy is fine---i guess if your lost in the woods and you cant see you truck/cabin at about 20m you have more serious issues. bottom line---geocaching isnt as simple as entering coordinates and walking to an point, in the mean time when you become familar with your gps you should be able to get yourself closer than the system specs by being able to 'figure out' what your gps is 'thinking'.
