  1. Hi everyone, I received my new serial cable yesterday from Garmin, and it worked like a charm on the first try! I downloaded all my waypoints to the EasyGPS application, and then uploaded the Garmin upgrade, which of course wiped all user data. I had a little trouble uploading my waypoints again from EasyGPS (more error messages), so I turned the unit off and on, and it then worked fine. It was so easy to just click on the cache page to download the data, instead of manually entering the coordinates. On another note (perhaps I'll start a new thread), is there a way to export the data in EasyGPS (or another even better application?) to a format that MSAccess will import? I've got my boss hooked now (work related application of the GPS), and he and I want more info... Thanks again! lisa4pride
  2. Hi All, Thank you for the info -I had a great trip also in Corvallis. I only did the Chipper's Conundrum, as it was going to be a long drive home... should've done the King of the Hill also, but it looked like rain! I hit 3 more caches on the drive back to Spokane -great way to make the drive go really fast -amazing!
  3. quote:Originally posted by pdxmarathonman:http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=18306 the above cache is at a rest stop with a nice look at the bridge you cross just before the rest stop. There are a few others along the route in that are of WA also. This is a southbound only cache. This is an odd reply in the topic labelled Corvallis! Hey thanks for the info -but I'm going the Tri Cities route so I won't be able to visit this cache on this trip. Hopefully another time. lisa4pride
  4. quote:Originally posted by Nurse Dave & LKay:So we did our trip yesterday. Got a little later start than we hoped and wanted to get back for the Bones and Brew on the waterfront, so we didn't have ALL day. The ones we went to and liked the best were: Bald Hill - This one was a double edge sword. Get view, nice hiking, but a long walk to get there. Wasn't ideal for people with a short time to cache. This was also the first of the day and gave us sore legs for the rest of the day. Aw Nuts! - Very nice. A short little walk with a steep hill at the end. Ends at a nice view. Chipper's Conundrum - It felt like a 15-20 minute walk, but I didn't time it. All uphill, but again a very nice view. This ended by some benches and I wished I could have spent some time at the end of this one to enjoy the view and relax, but the rain started and the cloud was pretty black so I took off back down the hill. Thanks for the info Nurse Dave & LKay! I will only have time for 1-3 caches in Corvallis, so your report helps me quite a bit. Now I get to find a couple of cache locations along the drive from here (Spokane) to there so I don't go crazy on the way there and back!! lisa4pride
  5. quote:Originally posted by Anders:Have you selected the correct GPS? In EasyGPS, open File/Preferences, then check that you've set it to Garmin eTrex (new models). Then select the proper COM port. The baud rate is automatically set to 9600 baud. Next, open GPS and select Test serial connection. Click OK, then watch it trying to check that the port is free, and in the next step identify your GPS. Anders Thanks Anders for your reply, but I have done all of those, running the test multiple times. I also gently tugged on the connectors on the cable to no avail. I should also note that I have disabled my PDA Hotsync. I just got off of the phone with Garmin, and they think that the cable is shorting. We were able to get the GPS and my computer to communicate through an application called HyperTerminal, but only sporadically. They are sending a new cable, so I'll post the results in a few days when it comes. Thanks all for replying!
  6. I've tried to use all of the ports. How do I check the baud rate?
  7. I have only owned my Venture for about a week, and I have been trying to download updates from Garmin and also use EasyGPS. Neither application can recognize my GPS! I get the error with EasyGPS: Msg: GetPacketOrTimeoutNoAck - timeout!-#22 Msg: GPSBeginTransaction - bad send packet-#22 Msg: No data was received from the GPS! (Error #22) I have the interface set to Garmin, new batteries, and the power on. I'm using the serial cable that came with it. I have windows 2000 professional. Any help or advice would be great!! lisa4pride
  8. You bet it’s improved my health! I love the outdoors, hiking, and I'm a techno geek to boot, so this is the perfect hobby for me. As a slight sufferer of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) Geocaching is a great cure. I work indoors and I’m a student, so I’m often inside a lot. There are just so many reasons now that I cache to get out and get that good light, find that cache, discover new places and meet new friends. Not to mention all of the added exercise benefits!
  9. I also just purchased (last week!) an etrex Venture after much hand wringing over all of the models (I did want to stay in the Garmin line). I purchased the 'yellow' for my father a few years ago (he's an avid hunter and over 70 and he occasionally gets lost these days...) but he found it too challenging to use. I think my brother has the unit these days. As a graduate student I'm on a rather tight budget this year, so I went with the Venture. I agree with expatriot that I'll wait for the price to come down for more cool features, and be happy today with my Venture. I found my first cache on the first try, and I'm having way too much fun (at the expense of my homework...;-) ) lisa4pride

  11. I'm also heading to Corvallis (from Spokane) Friday the 13th for the Rennaisance Festival that weekend, and I will be also spending some time teaching a friend and her little girl how to geocache. Any good suggestions? I hope to hear back how your trip went Nurse Dave and LKay. Have fun!
