I'm sad to learn that Don.Morfe passed away in April. He was an active part of the Waymarking community, posting photos from his lifetime of travels. I had the pleasure of meeting him in person a few years ago while in Baltimore (one of only a handful of active waymarkers I've met). All I can say is that he was a genuinely passionate person who enjoyed documenting the not-so-known history of America for others to discover. May he rest in peace

Possible New Category - Amazing Race
bluesnote replied to Lightnin Bug's topic in Recruiting and Category Proposals
And, now that you mentioned it, these "locations" can already be waymarked in "movie locations" which should just be renamed to "filming locations". So I guess we don't need a new category that already fits will with an existing category. -
Possible New Category - Amazing Race
bluesnote replied to Lightnin Bug's topic in Recruiting and Category Proposals
I like this idea, but I haven't watched the show enough to know what places are known target locations and which ones are not (although I am quite familiar with the premise). Is there a list of these already? If so...making a waymark could be much easier. Assuming the show is still in production (which I am not quite sure it is) will more target locations will be "made" or is this number fixed? -
I have few general questions about featured waymarks: Is the total number of featured waymarks always capped around 380, or can the number be as high as wayfrog/HQ allows? I noticed I had a waymark that was featured many years ago, but at some point it was no longer featured. Was this to make room for other waymarks or, more specifically, what is the reason some waymarks are de-featured? Is there a list of all the waymarks that were ever featured assuming others have been removed from this prestigious list? I'd love to hear more about the backstory on this

I am using spotty university wifi and the website seems to be doing fine with uploading images and whatnot. Haven't had any issues the last few days either.

Moonlight towers/Moontowers
bluesnote replied to 173Carver's topic in Recruiting and Category Proposals
While interesting, I think these are too rare to be included into Waymarking. Perhaps other categories can fill in the gaps. -
Personally, I would think you are Waymarking the stamp and not so much the location. Therefore, if there are multiple stamps then there should be multiple waymarks to cover each of those stamps. I'm not an officer in those categories, but maybe reach out to them and see what they say.

Part of the problem would be trying to define what is a themed town and what is not. Colonial Williamsburg is indeed a themed town, but it originally wasn't built as such. Also, would Lake Buena Vista in Florida (home to Disney World) be considered a themed town? It does have a permanent population (of about 20) and is incorporated, but is run and operated by a private organization. How big (population or area) does the town need to be to be considered? I think it will be quite difficult to decide which towns should be accepted and which ones are not. Not impossible to do, but it will take some work. There are similar categories that might cover this. People Named Places covers towns and cities. And small town, big name might overlap a few places. Something also to consider.

FIRST THING TO DO AS A LEADER/OFFICER !!!
bluesnote replied to dreamhummie's topic in General Waymarking Topics
It has always been like that for as long as I can remember. -
What about the 3d displays? I feel this category is more a fit for those rather than murals, since the murals category already covers them.
-
Actually, this isn't a bad idea. This could theoretically go into the photo goals category. Although I feel these have a better fit as a new category since they are becoming more popular and widespread. I've seen several of these within the last year in my travels and only more will eventually pop up in more cities/towns. That means if your town doesn't have one...they soon will. Just look at the free community book exchange category from a few years back. They used to be seldom found, and now they are everywhere. I feel, given time, the same will happen with these wing displays.

Here's a solution: https://web.archive.org/web/20230715042845/http://www.greatbuildings.com/

To differentiate this between the murals category, maybe you could require these to be in 3d. I've seen a lot of these pop up recently and they are pretty cool. The 2d ones should and could be submitted to murals, but the 3d ones will have a hard time Waymarking with the current categories. I feel a 3d category that will cover them will suffice. Well done on the idea and write up.

Anyone going to Geowoodstock in Flagstaff, Arizona this weekend? I'll bring my Waymarking sticker so you can log my sticker waymark. Come find me volunteering at the trackable table from 12:30-3:30.

Help Determining Category for my Waymarks
bluesnote replied to OceanicCrew815's topic in General Waymarking Topics
It would be helpful if you posted pics as well, but right off the bat these can go into multiple categories. And I'm sure with some further research, I can identify other categorial fits. But I would need the location (coordinates) of the buildings along with photos to do so. - One-room schoolhouse, dated 1887 One-Room Schoolhouses Dated Buildings and Cornerstones OR Dated Architectural Structures Multifarious (it will depend on the type of marker. If it's anything but a bronze dedication plaque, submit it to Dated Buildings and Cornerstones). Former Schools (If the school is no longer in operation) History Museums (If the school has been converted to a museum) -Sod-house (replica of original created in the 1980's) Exact Replicas -Old homestead/farmstead with house built in 1903 Homesteads -Two barns, including one that is the largest in the state. Barns Superlatives - The site also has an unusual cement plaque featuring the names of an early mayor and council members. Dated Architectural Structures Multifarious OR Citizen Memorials (depending on the context of the marker) Hope this helps! -
This specific person has logged about 100+ of my waymarks in central Florida. I reached out to them explaining they need to upload photos for proof of visit. No response after a few days. Now they are back to logging more of my waymarks. To me: no photo = no credit. I also use the same standards when I visit other waymarks, despite if I clearly remember seeing the object in person. It's not that hard to take a photo nowadays.

Sad I missed @bootron last night on the Geocaching Talk Network's livestream about everything Waymarking. Just watched the recorded video and it was interesting seeing the history of the site and how it has grown over the years. Thanks bootron for everything you do to keep both Geocaching and Waymarking possible! Hopefully more people will start Waymarking For those wanting to watch the recorded live stream, here's the video link:

Archiving waymarks that have been destroyed or moved
bluesnote replied to Country_Wife's topic in General Waymarking Topics
I disagree. Archiving a waymark means we loose that documentation and history of that object. For example, recently a lot of Confederate memorials have been removed here in the US. A lot of them are waymarked. Waymarking preserves their history. You can still visit the site of where a statue once was, but by archiving the waymark you loose that history and documentation. Instead, what has been accepted at least in the Waymarking community is to say "legacy" in the title to signify the object is either missing, stolen, or no longer standing. Makes it easy to know if something has been reported missing. Just my two cents. -
I can also help with the train station category.

Mountain Gaps and/or Mountain Passes
bluesnote replied to PISA-caching's topic in General Waymarking Topics
I agree with Keith, the two words are interchangeable. Typically, from my experience, "gap" is designated for roads and "pass" for interstates or highways. But I have seen the word "gap" used for an interstate crossing albeit it was called a "gap" historically before the interstate was built through.
