  1. and that might well be the crux of the problem. They did kill any sort of useful search function because the computers were getting overheated.I don't have any direct experience with the internals of Groundspeak's site, but to me, it looks like a hobby site that has grown well beyond its original concept, and is showing the strain. They've probably got a lot of legacy code that just isn't up to the tasks they'd like it to do, and replacing it with a new, well-deigned code (without disrupting the ongoing use of the site) won't be quick and it won't be easy. I would certainly agree with this statement.
  2. perhaps the mystery uses something other than a shift 13 for the Caesar cypher.

  4. And what's annoying is despite the fact that users have specifically asked for more location-theme-collectable types of souvenirs they've discontinued them and, instead, continuing to give us achievement based souvenirs instead. Did anyone ask for a souvenir for finding a traditional cache any day of the month of August? Apparently so, but I don't recall that thread in the forums. Perhaps it was on farceface.
  5. I think the simplest, and most likely explanation, is that the finds were never logged on the site, so they were never lost. The OP has not confirmed that at one time the site listed the 300 some finds. Could it be she uploaded field notes but never edited the logs? Not sure how that field note thing works since I don't use it, now or ever. If so, they probably are still in her account. Could it be she thinks if they are marked found on her GPS they are also marked found on the site?
  6. Bookmark is up. Data file on cachemachine.hollenback.org for the Boundary Bay Cache machine has been added. Problem children ... #28 GC1A2AN 4 DNF's in a row. #56 GCVG5Q 3 DNF's, but from the same group #59 GC2X2J6 Missing container and log #100 GC2JT9A 4 DNF's in a row
  7. Can one of our Canadian friends shed some light on the Gas Buddy Gas Prices? In Delta, BC Petro-Canada is listed as 142.9. I'm hoping that is not USD $142.90 a gallon.
  8. Moderators frown on the same discussion going on in two threads at the same time.
  9. Probably Chinese knockoffs. I would be very leery of them and without the unlock code they are useless.
  10. That is just a patch file, not the full program. Mapsource was not available as a download like base camp. It came with the map products. There was a way to snarf it with a tutorial program but I forget the details. Besides that program is probably not around anymore. I think the procedure use to be documented on gpsfilesdepot.
  11. June. The listed "last visit" date may be April, but his last find was two months later. Edit: you're right, though. He hasn't visited the website since April. Website visit date is a really poor indicator of activity. Smartphone activity does not register, I don't think API activity registers. The best indicator of caching activity is the last logged cache. And if a person users a smartphone to cache, sending email is like talking to a brick wall. They may well nt monitor their email account, or the email account listed is a throw away email account. Some times they just pop up out of no where.
  12. Radnor gave us that ability on the Groundspeak profile pages. Thank you Radnor. Now we need the API guys to check the column Radnor put in the database to suppress showing the souvenir on the Groundspeak profile pages so the API does not return the hidden souvenir. Then the souvenir will be gone from project-gc's profile page also.
  13. No argument here. My erex 30 is by far better than my GSMAP 76CSx and my palm M500. Less to fuss with and all the information is right there on one device. Only down side is writing logs with the joy stick is not at easy as it is on the M500. If you go the Cachemate route expect to put out some effort getting it all working. If your not comfortable with computers it might be a bit daunting.
  14. Yes the M500 works just fine with Cachemate. Basiczally you load the program on to the SD card and install from there. Do some searching here, I've posted a couple times. GSAK is the easiest but I suppose you could process a gpx file and load that. Wait a minute there. An SD card is NOT necessary with CacheMate. I NEVER used one. GSAK is not easy. Yes, you can "process a gpx file" through the cmconvert program (CacheMate File Converter). There were a lot of CacheMate discussions here a long time ago. A dying subject now, but you can still read through them. GSAK is totally unrelated to CacheMate. I had used CacheMate quite often (not for some time though), and I have NEVER used GSAK. BUT, you are not a Premium Member. That would be a bit of a problem. You need to buy a Premium Membership ($30 per Year) to be able to get GPX files. That is where all the data is. CacheMate always was a free download (probably still is) that would load and work perfectly as a demo for a small number of caches. Buying and entering the Registration Code made it fully functional for several thousand caches (even without an optional memory card). If the m500 is a complete package (with charging cradle and software), even as a Non-Premium member you could copy selected text from individual cache pages to the Palm (slow process). But to get bulk data in there quickly, you need that Premium Membership. The last I looked (two years ago?), about $30 for a complete m500 package shipped was a common price point. But you have no guarantee the battery will hold a good charge (several days worth). A new battery was about $10. Some even come with the tool to open the case to allow battery access. If you do get a Premium Membership, generate a GPX file, download it to your computer ... Then you are ready to run the file through the cmconvert program (the CacheMate File Converter). What GPS do you have? How are you getting your caches into your GPS now? A free program, EasyGPS, is how I loaded the same GPX file to my NOT-paperless Garmin. But as you pointed out, I needed the Palm to hold all the cache page details. Then comes the fun where you set up the HotSync for the first time. It works best from the charging cradle, but there is a much less cumbersome cable available on ebay. Just don't lose that charging cradle if you go that route. When the alternate cable occasionally stops working, the cradle would bring it back to life again (eventually). I don't want to discourage you. Just be aware an m500 is NOT exactly Plug-n-Play. But I managed well enough till I got a Paperless Oregon. That also can be finicky at times, but I am NOT going back to that dust collecting Palm any time soon. Good Luck. If you get the Palm and get stuck, drop me a note. I could learn it all over again and help you out. Last comment first. On 64bit systems (about all that has been available for the last few years) Hot Sync will not work because the needed drivers aren't there. There were some 3rd party ones a few years ago, but considering the red hot palm market they might not be around any longer. Maybe a google search will be happy. The first comment is that the SD card is not really needed, unless you don't have hot sync working. You then put the program on the SD card to install it. Also without hot sync available life is much simpler and easier if you put the database on the SD card. The application can't run on the card but the database can be on the card. Yes the free download works for 10 caches only. I forget if it is time limited.

  16. From personal experience, a gift membership adds to the current membership and extends it 12 months.
  17. Not aware of one. But if you gift it it will add to the current membership and extend it out 12 more months.
  18. But if you don't have a data plan and are connected to the internet with you smartphone then reason to use a smartphone really doesn't make sense. Overall smartphones simply can't measure up to a dedicated GPS unit. Fragile, limited battery life and not near as accurate.
  19. If you have a smartphone you have to buy a data plan. It doesn't matter if there is coverage or not. It doesn't matter if your caching with stored data or not. I don't want a data plan. Argument: FAIL I'm not sure what generation of people out there don't have a data plan, but I ain't one of em. I have a data plan whether I geocache or not. A whopping $30! Scandal! Sorry, your argument fails...again. And again and again. There is NO cache I can't find with my iPhone. Esp hide a keys under park benches/tables. Why do you need to insult me to win your argument? $30 for a data plan? That is as much as my cell phone bill so my bill would double. Sorry, I have no need for a data plan, especially when my phone is off probably 25 or 27 days a month. For some reason I don't have an overwhelming desire to share with the world that I am going to Wally World or tweet a picture I of my Mickie D lunch or that I'm getting gas. (Probably from the Mickie D lunch) I have not said you can't find a cache with your iPhone, just that some of us don't have an overwhelming need to have an iPhone or an Android. Can't you understand the simple concept that I'm not tied to my cellphone and therefore a cellphone is not the right choice for me? and perhaps a number of other folks. So to repeat, I do not want a data plan and therefore I will not need a iPhone to use for caching. So don't tell me that my desire to cache using a GPS is a big fail, because for me caching with an iPhone is a big FAIL. Because of this your argument that all you need is a iPhone fails big time.
  20. If you have a smartphone you have to buy a data plan. It doesn't matter if there is coverage or not. It doesn't matter if your caching with stored data or not. I don't want a data plan. Argument: FAIL
  21. I found it on the back of a stop sign downtown. Taking it off would have destroyed it so I left it there.
  22. You nailed this one Key. Yes he did. Nailed that forum guideline violation right to the wall so we could all see it.
  23. I have cached many places where my phone displays "Searching for System". Unless you preloaded the caches your going to be saying "I wish I had a GPS". And what about battery life. My eTrex can go for two days of 12 hour days on ene set.
  24. And do you know what HTML looks like on a paperless device? Clearly HQ thinks everyone uses a smartphone.
